per hoop scoop, 6-10 north carolina center peter daaleman has committed to lafayette.

hes a bit under the radar, but espns scouts inc has some nice things to say:

Quote:
A very skilled senior big man who missed Saturday's action (2008 Bob Gibbons Fall Evaluation Clinic) with congestion in his chest, but played well on Sunday. Daaleman needs strength, and, obviously, was not at 100%. But, he showed good post moves, passing skills and an accurate shooting touch with range. He is still developing, but passes our look test. Those in need of a promising big man should check him out.

The bench is getting alot taller. Next year will be 3 @ 6'-10" & 3 @ 6'-8". This makes 3, do we have another scholarship to give for this class?

During the Princeton game Gary Laubach mentioned that one of the contributing guards - Gruner, I think (I was only half listening at the time - is on an academic scholarship ala' the former QB, Bill Maurer.  Is this true?

Yes - Marquis Scholarship.     He was not one of the three scholarship players in his class.    The three with the schollys were Koltun, Hines, and Andersen.

It's often hard to tell what info is accurate, but all of the following have been reported to be on athletic scholarships in one press report or another:

Koltun
Kari
Mintz
Wheeler
Benbow
Visockas
Willen
Pelham
Mower
Petkovich

With the three commitments for next year, that would add up to 13 - which supposedly is higher than the allowable LC number, so it is possible some of the published reports are wrong.   If they are, I'm not sure which player is not on scholarship.    Maybe Kari - although it was reported on East Carolina's official site that he left ECU for a "scholarship offer" from Lafayette.

Does anybody recall the fit the league had over the possibility of Marquis scholars playing sports way back around 1980 or so. What a bunch of pompous buffoons ran the show then.

I don't think the scholarship players have ever been distinguished from the non-scholarship players publicly, so it's really just guessing.

It's not "guessing", since all of the ones I named above have been named in articles or by scouting services as having received athletic scholarships.    And several of the ones not on my list have been identified as not having received athletic scholarships. The issue is whether all of those reports were accurate.

I put little faith in all the reports and articles.  They still claim our football recruits receive full scholarships and we all know that the Patriot League does not allow football scholarships.  Sometimes a player, coach, parent, etc will refer to any aid they receive from a school as "scholarship" money.  They do this for a number of reasons (talked about it before, no need to bring up dead topics).

From a fan's perspective, I'm not sure it is such a big deal whether a player receives a basketball scholarship or a Marquis scholarship.  Sure it's nice to know but do you root for the players differently?  The expectations should still be the same, right?
