This will be the first season with Teresa Grentz bringing in her own recruits. She is bring in 4 recruits: Olivia Gumbs a 6'1" F/G, Sara Agnello a 5'10" G, Alexis Santarelli a 6'2" F and Tasha Vipond another 6'2" F.

The team will be road warriors with 9 of their first 11 games being on the road.

The last winning season for the women's team was 1997-98, 15-13 overall, and 7-5 in the League. We may be another year away.

Andy, I'm not sure the Atlanta PG committed, it may have just been an official visit.

This year indeed is a new beginning for the women's program.  If Grentz and her very able assistants can't turn it around, the program will flounder for many years to come.  I'm anxious to see the team play.

She's definitely brought in some size. Will be an interesting year for both Men and Women. Lots of growing pains, but, it will be fun to watch the development.

Using last year's RPI for comparison (because that's all I've got this time of year), seven other PL teams joined us at 200 or below. If we win all of the home games in those series, that's seven wins. Throw in a few road PL wins to hopefully balance out a couple of inevitable home stinkers.

The non-conference schedule probably isn't going to do us many favors as far as wins and losses. But if we also win three of our five most winnable non-conference games (Bobby Mo, Hampton, Bowling Green, La Salle, Rider), now we're up to 10 total wins.

Obviously, I have higher aspirations for this team than 10 wins. Sweep a few of those PL series and all of sudden we're over .500 in the league and maybe avoiding the play-in round. But - assuming we get solid production from the underclassmen - I think 10 is around the minimum to qualify this season for "optimism going forward" status.

Sagarin has rankings for women's basketball that are quite a bit more useful than RPI.   This is how the teams ranked last year, along with their rating and W-L record:

57   Army . . .     80.34   28-3
148   Bucknell   68.83   25-8
196   Lehigh .   64.04   17-13
233   Holy Cros   60.72   13-17
239   Loyola  .   60.50   16-16
240   Navy . . .   60.39   14-15
263   American   57.57   8-23
297   Colgate .   53.91   7-23
307   Lafayette   52.33   6-23
338   Boston U.   46.19   3-27

Of the mid-tier teams, Holy Cross, Navy, and American figure to be better this year, with Loyola likely worse.

Thanks for the extra info, 137. I guess my benchmark of 7 league wins stays the same... maybe we sweep BU or 'Gate and lose both to Holy Cross or the brown team. Either way, if there are no MAJOR improvements by our conference foes, I still think we need a minimum of 7 PL wins to be considered competitive.

I am usually a doubting Thomas, but I think the WBB program can take a decent step forward for the following reasons:

(1) Army and Lehigh will take major steps back. The Black Knights lose an incredible player in Minato as well as a pretty good one in Oertner.  The underclassmen are unproven or role players.  The Squawks graduated Kinek and took an unexpected hit when Lexi Martins finished in three years and decided to use her final season as a grad student at GW.

(2) Outside of Bucknell, I don't feel the Pards are an underdog against any of the rest of the teams on the list and a favorite against several. Mifsud and Scott are gone at HC but the Saders had a decent nucleus of underclassmen.

(3) I think Lafayette had one of the better recruiting classes heading into the 16-17 season.

In addition, our coach is a winner bringing confidence and motivation to our program. Our losing culture hasn't YET infected her.

1. Agree that Army and Lehigh will be a lot weaker this year, although I still think they will be stronger than LC.
2. Holy Cross really only lost Mifsud (and Hourigan), since Scott missed almost the whole year (and all PL games) with her torn ACL.
3. Bucknell should be good, but did lose two very good players who were expected to start. One, Jacquie Klotz, would have been preseason POY but she has given up basketball and transferred to Fordham, where she has no involvement with basketball. Her Mom is a professor there and her twin brother is a student. The other is a freshman who would have had a shot at being Bucknell's fourth consecutive FOY, but unfortunately tore an ACL.
4. Navy will, again have no height, but should be pretty good.

Lafayette is No. 8 in the preseason league poll. Bucknell is No. 1.

I'd pick a better finish than eighth for the women. The Top Three teams are solid. After that anything goes.

I think Holy Cross is also solid for a top four finish.  After that, it gets murkier although I think it will be tough for LC to crash the top six.  Time will tell.

No question in my mind that we will host a playoff game. We now have an excellent inside game, some adequate ball handlers, and a confident coach who knows how to win.

It won't affect Grentz.  She is a winner.

Grentz is an anomaly at Lafayette - She has a plan and the ability to carry it out.

Agree - she is a very determined coach.  And her assistants are staying with her so far.
