With a game at Colgate on Wednesday, I thought we had a great chance to get off to a 2-0 start. This is certainly not one of Bill Gibbons better teams. But the way we played, it didn't have to be.
We came out in our "stand around offense" and scored only 12 points in the first half. I believe that's the worst half in PL history since American scored 9 against Lehigh in last years opener at Bender. If it wasn't for Keisha, who had 10 of the 12 on drives to the basket, it would have been even worse. We didn't have a good game plan and didn't play with enthusiasm.
We had a mini-rally in the second half to close it to 5 but HC re-established control of the game. With the exception of Wright's play and Garners inside toughness (12 rebounds, 11 points) our play was soft. Another 20 turnover game with only 5 assists.
The coaching staff has to shoulder some of the blame also. Not only was the game plan lame but the substitution pattern was.. well, hard to explain. Zavocki struggled all day, just 2 of 14 and 1 of 12 from the arc but played 36 minutes. Meanwhile Jackson and Malone got just 4 minutes each. The inside trio of Virgin, Smith and Serowoky didn't fare much better, a combined 1 of 9 for 5 total points and 8 rebounds in 42 minutes.
I thought this was a team that could finish fourth but with our road record, I'm now doubtful we can make .500 in the league. |
