The coach quit. This is an excellent time to drop this sport. It's boring and it's 99.9 percent about the pitcher. Just not a popular or valuable activity.
It does nothing for the school.
It's time to get real about several sports.

While we're cutting things we individually have no interest in, lets cut the following majors:

History, Philosophy, Music, Russian and Eastern Studies, Theatre and Art.   Think of the savings from the bloated professorial staffs.   The kids can major in other stuff.   These majors add nothing to the school

Bpard is a solid supporter of the eggheads who run the place. So when they starve athletic programs of resources, with resultant failure, he''s right there to call for elimination. I suspect Varnum finally realized the futility. This is an excellent opportunity to give a new coach a few additional scholarships and a chance.

I'm surprised he resigned. He improved the team over his 4 years here. However, I don't believe he understood how good Lehigh, Boston and Army would be.

If you are watching the current playoffs, you quickly realize that pitching is the name of the game. He had 2 scholarships (and I was told they are getting 2 more) but he didn't spend them on pitchers.

If the next coach has four scholarships lets hope he/she uses two scholarships, one every 2 years on pitchers and the others in key positions.

Check out Lehigh's roster, see where they recruit from and compare them to our recruiting area.

PL wins last 4 years: 4,1,3,5. I believe we lost 2 games to last place Colgate this year. LC finished 2nd to last.

"Four scholarships" so 1 per year?  I dont know how many times we can rehash this. Good players have options, why pay 50k to come here and lose. A top notch, scholarship pitcher to whom the sport is important wants to be surrounded by good players. It might take a scholarship and the prospect of a competitive program to lure a top pitcher.   varner's guitting may indicate softball isn't getting added resources. Maybe "the study" has spoken.

Maybe Lehigh is dedicated to winning in all sports and at Lafayette under the current regime  winning doesn't matter in most sports. Hopefully things are changing.[/quote]

Knowing how slowly Lafayette goes about hiring coaches and considering that the AAU season will begin in a few weeks (including the one in Q-town) who will be responsible for recruiting?

We had/have three assistants:

Ashley Gerhart, an OF @ Robert Morris, 1 year as an assistant coach.

Kristin Jordan, a C at DeSales, 3 years as assistant coach.

Carly Riepenhoff, played @ Bowling Green, pitching instructor for high school pitchers, 1 year assistant coach.

Does the Athletics Department have a plan?

Can't cut German or Civil Engineering because Lafayette's original charter requires instruction in both. But why not cut English (nobody speaks it properly any longer), Physics (apparently it's not "intersectional") and Mathematics (which unfairly burdens certain repressed populations). Would anybody notice?

English, Philosophy and Calculus classes get better attendance than some games. Plus, people actually pay to attend. Quite a bit.
I've been to a couple softball games. Free. Me and about 20 other fine folks each time. Even if Lafayette were good, it's not going to make an impression.
Thank God and the Marquis for Volleyball! That's one sport we can count on!

Cutting softball would have major Title IX implications.  So I don't see that happening any time soon.

Softball, like baseball, track, golf, and all the other spring sports, is deemed to be nothing more than a participation exercise.  The snow begins to melt, the winds at Metgzer shift from the NE to the NW, and it is thus time for all the girls and boys to head the three miles from campus to kill some time between 4-6 p.m. every day.

I think "Jexx" is a great name and I hope they can find someone with an equally cool moniker.
