Danielle Fiacco Commits to Lafayette College09/25/09 2:03pm
Danielle Fiacco has made a verbal commitment to attend Lafayette College and will play on the Leopards womens basketball team on a full athletic scholarship.  Congratulations Danielle!  Danielle will sign the Letter of Intent on Friday, November 13th, 1:30 pm, in the District conference room.

77 rating from insiders.  Sounds exciting!!    Xbo, should we be excited?

I live in her area and know a little about her.     She didn't start playing basketball until H.S. and only has about two years of AAU under her belt.  She is very much a project, but then you can't teach height.    I doubt if she will be ready to help much her freshman year but down the road she could definitely be a factor.     Obviously she can alter shots - but her stamina, mobility, and ability to run the floor are question marks.    BTW, I think she may be the tallest women's player ever in the PL.   (I can't recall a taller player anyway.)

Here is an article on her from the local paper:   http://m.lohud.com/detail.jsp?key=186399&full=1

The scouting of lower level women players is not very precise to say the least, but fwiw here are Scout Inc's definitions of the relevant grading ranges:

77-79: Low-major plus prospect:
Player could contribute at a mid-major school but should be a significant contributor as a freshman at a low-major program.

73-76: Low-major prospect:
Player should be a solid contributor and two- or three-year starter at a low-major program.

One other comment.   Fiacco plays in a small-school division for a very small H.S. (total enrollment just over 300), so you can't really judge her at all by H.S. stats.   A number of the teams she is facing have 5'8" centers.  The key will be whether she can hold her own defensively and get her shot off against fairly athletic 6'2 centers of PL caliber.

Great article, thanks!   I like what those coaches had to say.  Sounds like Danielle is committed to working hard to improve, if so, its up to our staff to develop her full potential.

I can say without hesitation as a fan, Tammy's kids, year after year, win or lose, seem to be the tightest knit group on campus; always laughing, always welcoming back those who have graduated.  Pretty cool.

When Joe Russo grads from Dental school, he's got my chops; if Maurer goes into geriatric medicine--perfect fit. Now we've got a future Vet for my assortment, awesome.

Had a chance to see her play a little pickup with the team during her visit. She ran the court real well with the other girls. Hard to judge her offensive moves during a pickup game since its mostly run and gun. She has a good build, not a tooth pick and not overweight.

Refrider and I met her and her parents at the tailgate before the football game on Saturday. He's probably 6'9' and mom maybe 6'4". Both parents were basketball players. Very outgoing family and I'm sure she'll fit in well with the team.

Like all freshman, she'll have to adjust to the faster, more physical game. And the coaches will need to adjust their offense to take advantage of her size.

Andy, thought I saw you on Saturday but didn't come down to say hello. You get any closer to the field and Clayton may put you in. Only question is, who would carry you off.

I don't know this girl...I don't know her story...I DO know a phenomenon:

Kid is tall...Kid doesn't like basketball...Kid goes to the store...Kid gets told "you MUST play basketball"....this plays out about a thousand times and eventually....kid suits up.

And these players rarely turn out to be great ones. I know of several Lafayette players over the past 2 decades who fall into that category but I'll take the high road.

Like I said...Don't know the girl...Don't know anything about her love for the game or her work ethic or...ANYTHING....I'm just nervous about this.

Besides...Who will she date?

Fordham's Kelly Roche was 6'5....Early 90's...and seemed gargantuan.. That's the tallest player I know of. But I remember seeing at least one 6'7 player visit Kirby last season.

To expect much out of her until at least her junior season would be unfair. She's played less ball than my 9-year old. I hope she's a worker...Like you said, you can't coach 6'7.
