Smith gives verbal commitment to Lafayette
Staff Report

Marin Independent Journal
Marin Catholic High basketball player Leslie Smith gave a verbal commitment for the class of 2010 at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, the first day of the regular signing period for basketball.

Smith, who missed the most of his senior year at MC with a wrist injury, will attend a prep school on the East Coast during this upcoming academic year. MC athletic director and head basketball coach Rick Winter said Smith needed to improve his SAT scores 50 points to get an offer from Lafayette this year. He bumped up his score 110 points, Winter said, but the scores were posted a day after Lafayette's deadline.

Nevertheless, Smith said he is excited about the opportunity. He had partial scholarship offers from San Jose State and UC Davis.

"They stuck with me through everything," he said, "through getting hurt and all that, they would call me all the time. They seemed like they really, really wanted me."

Smith averaged 15.7 points per game in 10 MCAL games this year, though the Wildcats surprisingly missed the MCAL and North Coast Section playoffs.

"After all the bad things that happened for him over the course of the year, it was nice to have something like this happen," said Winter, who had maintained contacts at Lafayette since Michael Turner's recruitment in 2005.

Former MC girls basketball standout Liz Virgin currently plays for Lafayette

Looks like he's good sized 6-2 or 6-4 depending on where you read. Who's got the CA connection?

Along with previously announced 6'11" Jake Kreuser from MN, that makes two recruits - and it's only December.  Have we entered the Twilight Zone?  Aren't we usually rummageing for scraps and leftovers in April and May?

Smith, btw, ended up at a relatively unknown basketball school, Kimball Union in New Hampshire.   Here is a picture of him supposedly signing his LOI.

Thankks, 137, and condolences.  You know more about this stuff than anyone, including the coaches, and you are friends with KenZ.  You obviously have no life and no reason to get up each morning.  Anyway, keep up the good work.

OK, well then, I guess he's 6-1". That's a little different than 6-4!?
