'08 early signing period verbal--Missy Downey

Good to see the early recruiting activity.

Delaware Valley Comets

"Missy Downey, a 5’7 guard from Cardinal O’Hara High School, becomes the 5th Comets player to announce her college choice. Missy has given a verbal commitment to Lafayette College of the Patriot League. Missy will a 2 yr starter at the point guard position for O’Hara on the basketball court, and also a 1st team All Catholic player in soccer. She is ranked top 10 in her class at O’Hara and plans to major in pre med.

Missly has been with the Comets since the age of 10. Congratulations to Missy and the Downey family."

DelCo Times 12/21/06:

"Cardinal O’Hara junior Missy Downey suffered a concussion early in the season and missed two games.

She returned for the Lions’ game at Germantown Academy and was involved in a collision in which she suffered a broken nose.

"They gave me a mask to wear like Rip Hamilton’s," Downey said. "I don’t know if I’ll wear it in games. I have trouble looking down when I’m wearing the mask."//////

We seem to be finally getting our act together with these early signings.
Hopefully we are doing our homework on these kids.

That didn't take long:

McGorry heads to Lafayette

By TODD THORPE
The Intelligencer

Lafayette College hadn't really entered the picture as far as eventual college selections for Mount St. Joseph's girls basketball standout Sarah McGorry through the end of her junior year.

But once she visited the school in June, she knew it was for her.

“I hadn't received any letters from them,” said McGorry, a Doylestown resident who attended grade school at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and will be a senior when classes start at Mount St. Joe's next month. “My coach (John Miller) called them and told them about me.

“They saw the game film from one of the state playoff games, and asked me to come visit. I visited in the end of June and I just fell in love with the school.”

McGorry, an athletic 6-foot forward who gave a verbal commitment to attend and play basketball at Lafayette last week, came into her own this season under Miller, the longtime La Salle University women's coach who took the Mount to the PIAA District One Class AAA championship in his first year at the Flourtown school.

“It helped me so much,” she said. “All the credit goes to my high school and my high school team. Once the new coaching staff came in, everything just turned around. I developed into a better player.

“The difference between (Miller) and old coaches is that he broke everything down and showed us exactly how to do it. It's been great having him there through whole college process. He knows so much about the whole college (recruiting process).”

McGorry was an integral part to the Mount's success last season, helping to lead the squad to a win over rival Villa Maria in the district title game. The teams met for the fifth time in the state semifinals, won by Villa.

All five starters will return for the Mount when the team takes the floor for practice in November.

As far as Lafayette, the Leopards went 7-23 in 2006-07 in its first full year of offering athletic scholarships, but coach Tammy Smith is building for the future, and McGorry is excited to be part of it.

“I love the campus, I love how it's close to my how and I think the coach, Tammy Smith, is great,” said McGorry, who also considered Colgate and Loyola (Md.). “She's really focused. She knows what she wants to do and she'll do whatever it takes to get it.”

OK Andy, since you are on a roll, I'll give you one more. A Center from Michigan. The clock starts now.
