....the roller coaster ride that a young team will take you
We almost gave up 100 to Hartford?
If ever there was a poster game on the merits of defense and not turning the ball over, this was it!
We shoot 50% from the field (including 50% from 3 pt land), we make more 3's than the opponent, we out rebound an opponent (again!) an lose by double digits.
11 more turnovers as well as letting them shoot 55% from the field did us in.

Was poor defense consistent with our other games?
Stating the obvious, but we are looking at a very tough year.

Some stats after 7 games:
Lafayette has averaged 44% from the field. Opponents have averaged 46%.
We are averaging 19 TOs per game; opponents 16.
We have outrebounded 3 of the 7 opponents. We are being outrebounded, on average, 37-35. (Last year we were outrebounded for the entire season by a 36-33 margin.)
I'm not sure what this tells us. I have been a little disappointed that some winnable games went the other way, but with 7 freshmen, 3 or 4 of whom are getting significant minutes, expectations should not be too high.
Anyway, the sky isn't falling. When we get to the league, Navy, American and Lehigh appear to have something, but we may be able to compete with the other 4 - and, yes, that includes Bucknell and Holy Cross, at least so far. Can Fran find the right combinations and have these guys at a higher level in January?

Defense is a problem you have with all freshman, unless they are extremely athletic. First of all, very few of them have the strength, especally upperbody, needed to play D1 basketball. Secondly, they were probably the best player on their high school team and their high school could not afford to have them foul out, so very little emphasis is placed on playing aggressive defense. Third, matchup defense is probably totally new to all of them.
They'll get better, but it may take the better part of the season.

Judging from last night's performance, our senior may be coming off the bench. This Mower kid is fitting in real nice and looks to be a solid player. I'm going to the Robt Morris game. Hope they come our with alot of energy from the final exam layoff! We need a win.
