15 Years After "Dropping Football"

The Morning Call's Paul Reinhard did a retrospective piece on how Lafayette came "Back From The Brink" of that dropping to D-3 and dropping football fiasco of the late 90s.  Not sure how many of us would agree that Lafayette athletics have "flourished since," but Paul, as always, makes some good points.  Here it is

Nice article. Thanks for sharing carney. Very helpful for someone new.

Its apparent that Rothkopf and Weiss were a nightmare for the program.

However you can also draw a lot of positives from that article. The AD has to be given some credit, as well as FT, for reviving the football program. Another good point is how some schools are dropping sports yet Lafayette has held or expanded. Certainly the AD deserves some credit for that performance. Now the question becomes, how do we improve our performance on the field in all sports?

For a new person after reading that article you have to give credit to the AD and his supporters as well as an extremely strong alumni organization and some good vision by the BOD in 1998 -2000 time frame and beyond. While that alumni organization is strong, its obvious that a handful of people made it all possible.

Another observation from someone new is Lafayette has lots of different ways to reach out to everyone to raise money. I give them credit, they are always selling something. Not many schools are as aggressive trying to raise money. It may get old at times but i can appreciate that.

A careful read will correctly point out this was alumni vs the BOT, rothkopf,( I still can't even capitalize his name), and a vocal minority in the faculty. Don't kid yourself the BOT saw what it would mean in fundraising if they did what they had planned. Remember Walter Oeschle resigning from the BOT and offering to pay rothkopf's salary for three years if he went away???  Many of those BOT members are still there and faculty never go away although Paul is right to an extent. Extending scholarships and staying division 1 has helped the school, not hurt it. Even to a long time PhD that has to be obvious. Also Atkinson and Russo, the AD  and football coach at the time were fired basically  because they let the cat out of  the bag and made a quiet coup not possible.
Regarding football Frank did keep it together and deserves a lot of credit when he inherited the position and eventually won with what he had!!

Thanks Carney.  Paul's article should be framed and displayed in a prominent place in Kirby - lest we forget.

It still makes my blood boil to think of those days, and how incredibly annoyed I was at Arthur.

That said. let's get back to the discussions about WINNING.

Less discussing and more doing would be refreshing.
