2012 PL football recruiting: initial look

Listings by service:

..........................Rivals----------Scout.com

Bucknell                61                      16
Lehigh                   34                       8
Colgate                  22                       5
Lafayette                12                       4

Not saying these numbers will translate to recruiting success, however, Coach Susan seems to be giving it the old college try.  They have a verbal from a 6-5 QB from Ossining.

Colgate aggressive with 5 of the rivals kids indicating they have been offered.
Pard4Life

First prospect on the list: Corey Ernst, QB, North Penn... lists Lafayette, Bucknell, Stony Brook as targets. Over 2000 yards and 22 TDs as a junior, 12:1 TD Int ratio... for those who don't know, North Penn is a big-time football program, probably a top five in PA and occasionally cracks the national top 25.

Susan is being very agressive in recruiting.  He has a verbal from a 6'5" QB from North Schuylkill.  Same school that produced Colgate's freshman starting fullback.  Susan had a verbal from this kid in August. PL schools typically do not recruit like this, but Susan is changing the game a bit by getting very early verbals.

Bucknell may be middle of the pack this year, and Susan is really going to turn things around in Lewisburg with one or two good recruiting classes.

At this point we have probably the 4th or 5th best head coach in the PL.  I would say the list is..

1. Gilmore
2. Biddle
3. Susan
4. Coen/Tavani pick 'em.  I put Coen this low because I feel his excellent O and D coordinators pick up a lot of slack
6. Kelley
7. Masalla

I think we get out coached at times, and with our medicore support from the admin and admissions we may have to get used to this.
Pard4Life

I agree Tanks... BU is going to be a force and we do not have full administrative committment.

Another recruit: Bryton Barr, 6'0, 215, OLB Mechanicsburg, PA, 175 tackles last year... he is also offered by Bucknell, but also has offers from places like Akron, Temple, Cinncy, Navy. He seems to be hoping for a Pitt offer. Odds we get this kid are zero: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/foot...ruiting/player-Bryton-Barr-102183
Pard4Life

Don't even know why I'm bothering with this one: Don Webber, WR, 5'11, 190, Duxbury, MA... Penn is falling hard for him and has interest in other Ivies. We are merely listed as "been contacted by" along with HC, UNH, Maine. http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/hi...burys-don-webber-likely-ivy-bound

I like the fact that we are aiming high, but I agree we have little chance with this kid without scholarships.  If we were able to offer a scholarship, we may get a handful of academic minded kids who would prefer to play here instead of Akron or Eastern Michigan.  3-4 higher level kids per year can make a major impact on the team.

Last year at this time our coaches felt we had no chance with Zwezig, so weird things can happen, but that was an unusual circumstance and you can't build a consistent winner like that.

Apparently Susan got commitments from a pair of 6-5 QBs in August.  This is the one I referred to earlier:

Ossining's Connolly Chooses Bucknell
by Tony Pinciaro (email) 08/30/11
.
Ossining quarterback Brian Connolly has verbally committed to attend Bucknell next year to play football.
Photo credit: Tony Pinciaro OSSINING, N.Y. -- While Brian Connolly sat and listened to Bucknell football coach Joe Susan, he kept glancing at his parents.
“My mom and dad gave me that look that said, ‘You have our blessing,’ ” said the Ossining quarterback.
Once Susan concluded the conversation, Connolly made his college choice, verbally committing to attend Bucknell next year. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Connolly, a senior and in his second year calling the signals, will have an opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback position next year.
“The coaching staff made me feel like I was part of the family,” said Connolly, who is considering a major in Physical Therapy. “My parents were happy with them also.”
Along with Bucknell, Connolly was also considering the University of Pennsylvania, Fordham and Monmouth.///////

He's majoring in Physical Therapy?  I'm pretty sure that's not something Lafayette offers.

Neither does Bucknell according to their website.  The young man may want to research that.

Yeah, but guess what?  Lafayette has announced a "New Women’s and Gender Studies Major" that will "Prepare Students to be Leaders in Today’s Diverse Society."

https://www.lafayette.edu/about/n...-today%E2%80%99s-diverse-society/

I kid you not.  It's no joke.  Not Architecture.  Not Industrial Design.  Not Petrochemical Engineering.  No.  We're going to graduate young men and women with bachelor's degrees in "Gender Studies."  What exactly are they going to know when they leave college?

I'm proud of my Lafayette education and the things it has provided for me, but this place truly is beginning to disgust me.

OK... recruits at the Yale game tonight and I made an effort to get every jacket I saw:

Whitehall, 2 guys
Nazareth, WR CB
Northwestwrn, DB QB
Middletown south DL 75
State college
Wall dt ot 75
Annville cleona
Blount, two guys
Linsly, two guys, one was 58
Colts Neck, NJ

Can anyone fill in the blanks?

Probably not the place, but someone started it.  My take on Patriot League coaches:

1.  Biddle - Not totally convinced of his ethics, but he just gets it done year after year after year.

2.  Gilmore - Sometimes I think he's doing it with smoke and mirrors, but he's doing it.

3.  Coen - He's been the top recruiter year in and year out, and, say what you will about the help from his assistants, he had enough sense to hire them.

4.  Tavani - He got a bump up on my list last week after the revelations about just how bad the institutional support is.  All too often the worst game day guy in the League.

5.  Susan - Too early to give him many points.  His first recruiting class was a major disappointment, but at least he is beating the teams that the Patriot League is supposed to beat.  Way, WAY too early for any "BU as a force" talk.

6.  Masella/Kelly (tie) - Neither should be collecting a Patriot League pay check.

North Penn crushed Qtown this weekend, 35-0. They've got some good sized offensive lineman. Any word if we are after any of them?

I would prefer a president with an engineering or science degree and with Ivy League graduate studies in management plus a law degree, who was an athlete as well and who appreciates productive creativity.

Like me, perhaps.   Cool

St. Anthony's is arguably the best program on LI.  They don't play any public schools on LI but consequently send players to many FBS and FCS schools.

We do need a QB based on the Fein philosophy of five.

I arrived after kickoff. Did they have recruits at Bourger again?  Saw several varsity jackets in the crowd like last week; however, yes, could be just taking in some PL football. (117 mile drive from Boiling Sprngs) Of course, these QBs could be sought for other positions as well.

Looks like Barr has agreed to walk-on at Penn St

The only kid other than Barr who has been offered, according to Rivals, is DT Ty Tucker from Walkersville, MD:

Possible that Bryant has a leg up on Tucker:

but the other kid mentioned in the article has been offered only by Bryant.

"Westley: And our assets?
Inigo Montoya: Your brains, Fezzik's strength, my steel."

I know I'm coming in late here, but is there some post in this thread that lists our assets? Who is left at each position, after we lose the seniors? What does this team look like, before the next recruiting class?
Franks Tanks

I saw a blurb that the center from Pen Argyl is interested in Lafayette.  He is 6' 3" 265 and appears to be quite athletic.
Pard4Life

Assets? Um let's just say we need help everywhere except QB, P, K, and TE.

I saw an OL/DL prospect wearing a Don Bosco jacket awhile ago, but he was only about 5'10...
pard92

Earlier in the thread someone noted that a Nazareth WR/DB was at the Yale game.  I'm a Nazareth grad and saw them there too.  Only one of them had a jacket on, but it was the Bridgeforth twins, Adam and Andrew.  Both are outstanding receivers who had huge years for the District 11 Champs.  Adam is listed as 6-0 180 on their website and Andrew at 6-2 180

Adam broke the single season school receiving record with 82 catches for 1289 yards and 8 TDs this year.  Andrew finished with 59 catches for 938 yards and 8 TDs for the season.  Both are very fast and track standouts as well.  Andrew qualified for states in the 800 and a relay and Adam was the District triple jump champ last year and qualified for states in the long jump.  As for football, they obviously can stretch the field, but are good across the middle too.  I've seen them make plenty of tough catches in traffic too.

They seemed to struggle in coverage on defense, so I'd assume they're being recruited as WRs.  They certainly have the speed to cover, but would need to improve their coverage skills.

Their dad went to Navy, competed in track and actually works for the FBI in Newark.  I'd love to have Adam and Andrew in Maroon and White.

Here are some youtube highlights, Adam first and Andrew second.

Going around sites updating PL recruit. Bucknell has 74 names on Rivals . I cannot ever recall any PL team having that many possibles. Susan must be doing one hell of a job selling BU
Andy

Jake DeCicco
School: Kingston

Position: wide receiver

Grade: Senior

First-team credentials: Caught 37 passes for 916 yards and 12 touchdowns, ending his career with a record 28 receiving scores.

The future: Division I University at Buffalo and Division I-AA schools Maine, Albany, New Hampshire, Colgate and Lafayette have made DeCicco full scholarship offers. He is also interested in other D-1 schools.

Peter Catal
School: Cornwall

Position: linebacker

Grade: Senior

First-team credentials: The repeat first-teamer led Cornwall with 130 tackles, adding six sacks. Catal was a solid run stopper and cover man. He put up 778 yards and 12 touchdowns at running back.

The future: Several Division I-AA schools, including Fordham, Albany, Lafayette and Rhode Island are interested in Catal.

The player: “Peter is just a phenomenal athlete and, every week, he was arguably the best football player on the field. He brought it offensively and defense.” – Cornwall coach Marcus Hughes

I hate to sound cynical but I have trouble getting excited about prospects when I don't see top caliber schools in FCS making offers to a player. I doubt we have found an overlooked player when DelVal and gettysburg are interested.

Agreed. That was my point p4l in posting the interest quoted on the 2 dates re that player. Seems like interest has fallen off, presumably as the schools got commitments from players higher on their lists or just pared down.

Still searching for published word on 2nd rumored LB commit.  Here is a name not seen before:

Brian Keller QB/DE/LB  6-3 225  Triton HS

Keller, a top student, has drawn recruiting interest from college programs such as Colgate, Fordham, Lehigh, Lafayette, Bucknell, and Old Dominion. He's not sure of his position in college football, and whether he'll focus strictly on quarterback or defensive end or move to linebacker or some other spot.

Thanks Andy,

I am also fishing for names. With dead period going til 1/3 , a rather faint hope. I am desperate enuf to go to newslink and randomly hit different locals.
Andy

Another of mutual interest, rich:

Darrell Crawford   GAR  (Wilkes Barre) 5'9 160   WR/DB,  HS QB

Crawford could also end up at receiver on the next level. Colgate, Lafayette and Lehigh are looking at him at that position. Pittsburgh and Temple are considering him as a defensive back.///

GAR landed four players on the Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State Class 2A team, including quarterback/defensive back Darrell Crawford for a second time.

Crawford finished his career with over 4,000 yards rushing. In nine regular-season games, he rushed for 1,308 yards and 24 touchdowns, threw nine touchdown passes, returned four punts and two kickoffs for touchdowns and returned an interception for a touchdown. The 5-foot-9, 165-pounder has drawn interest from Pittsburgh, Temple, Lafayette and Lehigh as a defensive back and slot receiver.////

Times Leader in the past week.

Will someone please give me a quick and dirty "Recruiting for Dummies" summary of the process.  We have kids wandering around at home football games in high school letter jackets and sightings are reported in threads such as this.  Then we have Andy and others combing recruiting websites and hometown newspapers for hints and leaks.  Now we have January "recruiting weekends."  The whole process is very hazy.  For instance (and only for instance), does a kid who was in attendance for the Fordham game also come back in January?  How does all of this fit together?

C2, starts with contact (letters in my day) during players jr year and coaches gauge interest and go from there.  Per NCAA kids get 5 "official visits" where colleges pay expenses and unlimited "unofficial" unpaid visits. Attending a game and visiting facilities would be unofficial.  Attending one of our two recruit weekends (host player, meals paid for, comp tickets, etc) would be an official visit.  Obviously coaches try to score some highly rated/position of need players early with offers and so we see a few verbals.  The Ivies have gotten very aggressive. In my day (your day) we had to wait till spring to hear from  Ivy admissions. Now of course the Ivy's have their "likely letters" and classes nearly fully committed before we even have a recruit weekend.

As you know there are contact periods, quiet periods, dead periods etc, regulated by NCAA.  No early signing period (except for JC transfers) in football as opposed to other sports.

Kids can make known to press and recruiting services their verbal agreements (non-binding). Colleges/coaches may not comment until signing day.
Andy

depressing in a way as 2 of them dont even have coaches.

Good explanation of recruit weekends. Most staffs use them to close the deal. ie they wont invite a kid, even tho they would die to get him , if it is too much of a longshot to sign him. I think LU is having 2. Historically the first one  sets your year as most if not all of your first choices are invited .

Bogie, absolutely just verbal commitments (limited to those who have chosen to make their agreement public knowledge. All football commitments other than JC transfers at any level, are "verbal" at this time), including some Early Admission applicants I would assume.

My understanding is that LOIs are for scholarship recipients, so not applicable to Ivyrecruits.  Their commits may go through a "ceremony" at their HSs on signing day, as ours do.  That doesnt mean that we wont read that Ivy commits have "signed":

GRANT TRAYLOR

The Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON -- Huntington High quarterback Tyler Hutchison has always been a team-first player.

However, for one Wednesday afternoon, the focus was on him.

The standout athlete got to enjoy a memorable day with family and friends as he signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at Yale University, an Ivy League school in New Haven, Conn./////

OR:

Parker Mack Signs with Princeton Tigers

PA Senior and Bruin #68 Offensive Tackle Parker Mack (featured photo left) announced this week in a ceremony in the Upper School Gym that he will attend Princeton next year and play for the school's football team.

As the number one offensive lineman prospect in Arkansas according to Max Preps, and the 9th best guard in the nation according to USA Today,///

From a lax player recently through the process:

http://www.berecruited.com/resour...the-ivy-league-recruiting-process

And from Ivy website:

* Admissions Offices at each Ivy school may offer some athletic and other candidates a "likely" letter, which has the effect of a formal letter of admission provided the candidate continues to have a satisfactory secondary school experience. Coaches may initiate the requests for these letters, but only the office of admission can issue a"likely" letter.

* Admissions decisions will be communicated only by official written notification from Admissions Offices, by notification in Early Action, Early Decision or “regular” processes, or by “likely letters” after October 1, which are confirmed by one of those notifications. No other indication of a possible positive admissions result is or should be considered reliable.///

Bottom line in my view,  the "likely letter" adjustment to their recruiting process has effectively addressed the problems the Ivy experienced in the past; and, added to their inherent advantages, is one big headache for those competing against them.  So, we move to scholarships.  How much they will help given our continuing AI policy is anyone's guess.

Happy New Year rich & cr.

My initial impression was that Ajoku and Hawkins were probably La-Laf recruits (we get these mixups on rivals every year) based on the competing schools - the likes of Troy St, Memphis, and Ga Tech;  however both do have decent academics, so who knows. We have been recruiting Ga in recent yrs.

Tillett is an FIU commit.

Okey Dokey. saw Tillet. My patience and attention span are running out. I know scouting Pa needs some time, but so far underwhelming

I know this kid.  I know that he will want to come east for college, that his parents both are Ivy alums, that his mom was an elite NCAA DI National Championship athlete, that mom's as tall (6'2") as he now is and that he's as good of a WR as he is a QB.

What are the rules about this?  I'm not sure.  I dare not speak to him, but I know for sure that he'll easily exceed either the Ivy or the Patriot AI.

Thanks.  My insights are merely informational.  I know that his extended family has considerable ties with several Ivy and Patriot institutions.  I'll just leave it at that.

This kid would be worth at least probing the boundaries of NCAA regulated behavior.

I see him in Crimson, demolishing us.

I'm not saying that this is a significant statistic, but, on the other hand, it is not cause for warm and fuzzy feelings:

A quick review of the Rivals recruiting site shows the following for "interest" by recruits in Patriot League schools:

Bucknell 78
Colgate 36
Fordham 20
Georgetown 44
Holy Cross 53
Lafayette 23
Lehigh 46

If you want to check it yourself, go to

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/recruit-search

You are now in the "Advanced Search" area.  Drop down to the "College" section and plug in the school of your choice.

I honestly have no idea what any of this means.  (Is the school interested in the recruit or is the recruit's mother interested in the school?)  Still, being dead last (Fordham, being 100% scholarship, probably should have a small, focused group of recruits and, as a different animal, is playing their own game here), and, last by a big margin, cannot be a good thing.

Further confusing me on the LOI issue is this Courant article on a CT HS QB signing his LOI at a public ceremony on Dec 29!!!!!!   How can that be? The kid had given a verbal commitment back in August.

Casey Cochran Signs Letter Of Intent To Attend UConn
December 29, 2011|By SHAWN COURCHESNE, scourchesne@courant.com, The Hartford CourantNEW LONDON — — The best high school quarterback for the past two years in the state of Connecticut made it official Thursday that moving to the next level of the sport will mean doing it at home.

During a ceremony at On The Waterfront restaurant in his hometown of New London, Casey Cochran, the two-time Connecticut high school football Gatorade Player of the Year, signed a letter of intent Thursday to attend UConn./////

This doesn't worry me at all. If the last two classes are as good as the coaches say, then their list is very focused.  Bucknell, trying to rebuild a losing program is casting a wide net. Its not how many you recruit but who you recruit.

AS Class A RB Colin Bryan considering Penn and Pards per Johnstown paper, 12/24.   Also a SS.  One of very few RB names I've seen for us.

Video:  www.hudl.com/athlete/299576/colin-bryan

The Windber tailback led the 26-team area with 2,352 rushing yards on 268 carries, an 8.8 yard average per carry.

Bryan also led the area with 232 points, or 98 more points than the next player on the scoring list.

His 37 touchdowns were 15 more than the next closest player in the rankings./////

Poetzsch is yet another guy with no discernible recruiting footprint whatsoever.  But wait, John Loose says that we have the greatest recruiting classes in his memory.  It shows - we doubled our win total from 2010 in 2011!  We must know a secret path to recruiting success.  Shhhhh, don't tell anyone.  Our opponents could use it and prevent us from getting that critical 5th win.

Gaither football recruiting updates

Updated Jan 4, 2012 at 10:40 PM

Here’s the latest scholarship/financial aid offers for senior Gaither football student-athletes, as reported by Cowboys head coach Jason Stokes. And considering some of these are pretigious academic institutions, we put the emphasis on student!

Defensive end Mikhail Reece has offers from Yale, Western Kentucky, Grambling and Holy Cross.

Defensive back Tyler McCollum has Colgate University and Lafayette College.

Thx, rich, new name for me.

See Zac Sawin verballed Gate but will visit LU anyway.  Thats 2 OL for Gate but they expect Reiche to go elsewhere if given the chance. Also verbal from P/K.  Three Fla verbals from early visit weekend.  Gate always good in FLA with input from alums in HS coaching positions

Lots of published intra-league competition this year.

Edit: oh i see Pappas on rivals list..   Article says Sawin chose gate last week, still not indicated on rivals.  Shabby treatment of FCS as usual.

Thanks, did not see verbal on Sawin. Geez, seems every year we lose OL recruits to LC and Gate.

Lots of head to head this year in PL,much more than in recent years

LU recruit weekends back to back this yr, 20 and 27. More new offers now than last year  but less signings at leastforLU

Randolph and Taggart received medical redshirts for undisclosed injuries during their respective fr years.  Watson as a soph was listed as Randolph's backup for the first 5 games but received a redshirt that yr for undisclosed injury.
Gilmore must have his backup QBs playing scout team DE.....

Have to admire Gilmore's national recruiting effort and HC's facilitating it, Gilmore in Texas this week.

BTW, as I'm sure you've seen, rich, Gilmore has declared HC the team to beat in 2012 "without a doubt."

I like Tom but it stretches credulity to have so many qbs injured in an unspecified manner. Watson not that good anyway.

Tom has a point. Who is going to challenge them? Perhaps Gate? Or maybe Bucknell.

We should've beat them last year.  Gilmore is a very good coach, but I don't think their overall talent level is better than anyone else in the league.
