2013 Football Recruits

Might as well get it started.  I'll add the names from the major recruiting services at some point.

Brandon Spatz, a 6-1, 200-pound junior wide receiver and linebacker, is being recruited by a number of Division I-AA programs, including William and Mary, Lehigh, and Lafayette.

http://articles.philly.com/2012-0..._1_croke-park-crusaders-ireland/2
edge29

"The 6-3, 220-pound quarterback has received scholarship offers from Bucknell, Buffalo, Colgate, Delaware and Lafayette...........Boston College could offer soon, perhaps as soon as this weekend when Yocum visits the campus to work out for the coaching staff.

Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Illinois, North Carolina State, Connecticut, Villanova, and Temple are among the other schools paying close attention.

College coaches like Yocum's size, his arm strength, his 4.59 speed and his effectiveness as both a pocket passer and a runner."

Nice finds guys. Per rivals we have a list starting, but it is a bit inaccurate as UL-Lafayette recruits are showing up.  If the kid is from Miss, Louisiana, or Alabama just assume he is a UL-Lafayette recruit.

To find the list go to the rivals page and click on the "database" link.  From there you can search by school.  For some reason the link in the browser is inaccurate when I copy & paste.

This Robert Garcia kid is a perfect example of the space we can now play in with scholarships. He has offers from Lafayette and Lehigh as well as Air Force, Iowa State, Ohio, and Florida Atlantic.  We may not land this kid in particular, but if we can get just a few kids like him per class our talent level will increase significantly.

Yeah, the first FL listing looks like a La-Laf, too, so we have 5 listed.  For comparison, Lehigh has 27.  Not that it means much, but that's been the case in recent years.  We were told 80-something at the spring game, for some reason our kids just dont make it to Rivals very often.

We have one kid listed on Scout.com, another reach kid who also list BC, Rutgers, etc. LU with 6 listed, 2 already committed elsewhere.

On ESPN Insiders, we and Taunters both list Parker Clonts, no one else.

Seen, not sure if the current Yocum of interest is related to our former player, Lucas Yocum who hailed from State College. No longer enrolled here.

Yocum to Delaware.

Incoming frosh Bencsko, Keller  (DE not TE) and Zateveski in NJ N-S All-Star game tonight at Kean. Bencsko and Keller were mentioned in today's Ledger as "Players To Watch."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

NORTH

Defense:

Dennis Bencsko, LB, Delbarton
No matter the situation, Benckso was a force at inside linebacker for Delbarton, a Non-Public, Group 3 finalist. The 6-foot-0, 215-pound Bencsko had 104 tackles, including 23 for loss. He was equally adept at creating havoc in pass defense with 13 sacks and four interceptions. Bencsko was a Star-Ledger First Team All-State selection and is committed to play for Lafayette College.

SOUTH

DEFENSE:

Others to watch: DB Larry Alston III, Matawan; DL Brian Keller, Triton; DB Jevon Tyree, South Brunswick.

I don't know the young man, but any First Team All-State from Delbarton is a solid get.

A first-team all-state NJ committment is a tremendous score.  We used to grab maybe one once in awhile or at least be a finalist on the players' lists.  I think Blake Costanzo was one.

A few go on to play FCS but often list CAA and now NEC teams.  The PL has to be in the mix now.
Andy

http://scoutingpa.com/index.php/v...le&user=651&name=jviviano

Viviano offered by most of the PL and some top Ivy.

Scouting Ohio shows us as having offered a player in June, however, that site now limits names to subscribers.  Bummer.

Fordham's second commit for 2013 seems impressive :

Marlon Crook  LB.   6-4   215 claims a 4.5/40.   Over offers from Harvard,  UMASS, Ohio.     Rivals.com.

Lakota West senior linebacker Mike Kelly was offered by Lafayette College this morning, according to Lakota West coach Larry Cox.

Kelly, who is 6 feet 1 and 215 pounds, has also received an endorsement of application from Princeton University, Cox said. Kelly has a 3.9 grade-point average. He will also play some tight for Lakota West this season, Cox said.

Mike is the son of Dave and Ann Kelly and the brother of former Lakota West standout and current University of Alabama offensive lineman Ryan Kelly.

It would be surprising if he chose Lafayette.  Princeton, though terrible, is a great draw and I'm sure he must be tempted by the hometown Bengals connection of their head coach.  However, if he wants to win now, he will come to LC.

Stranger things have happend.  If Marlon Crook can choose Fordham over Harvard (see Andy's post above), why can't someone choose Lafayette over Princeton?  Even though Princeton has a very generous financial aid policy, we can now counter that by offering a full scholarship.  For low-need families, who cannot afford to totally ignore cost (i.e. upper middle class), it may be a differentiator for us.

That's it, the 10 or20 grand per year may be the deciding factor.

This has been an often discussed scenario, and this may be our first test case.  Will this young man select a full ride from Lafayette over paying 10-20k per year at Princeton (guess of course)?

Campers I'm following to see if offers materialize:

Amos Campbell  OL/DL  6-2  270  Montclair

Malik Valentine RB/DB 5-7  155 Montclair-Beard

Mitch Wagner WR/DB  Williamsville East

Connor Jacobs QB/LB 6-2  210 Corning

Anthony Rizzolo  DL/OL  6-1 285  Watchung Hills

Good thing to note in the scholarship era is that we will hopefully be seeing more All-State NJ kids.   It's impossible to qualify for significant need-based aid if you come from New Jersey if you do not have financial challenges.

Some players with offers listed on ESPN:

From Yahoo:

Caleb Scepaniak, Binghampton, NY, Union-Endicott, ATHLETE, QB 6'5", 225, Offers from: Buffalo, Fordham, Wagner, Cornell .. we are the only other FCS on the list, along with lower-level BCS teams... "Scepaniak left (BC) without an offer but he didn't seem too down when we talked to him. He plans on returning for the June 9 camp and he knows that's his best chance to pick up that coveted offer. He also plans on camping at NC State, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. Scepaniak told EagleAction.com that he would like to make a decision by the beginning of August.  So far he has offers from Buffalo, Cornell, Fordham and Wagner.

Kevin Weller, West Lawn, PA, Wilson HS (isn't this ZZ's HS?)  6'1", 220lb QB, list includes Lafayette, Bucknell, Harvard, Holy Cross, Ill. State, and BCS's like Missouri, Florida State, South Carolina... so I don't know...

With scholarships we will always have these questions.  No more classes of 30+.  Coaches will have smaller numbers at quantity positions like OL and will have to be a lot more certain when they make the offer.  I would suspect that, being a little bit down the football food chain, a lot of our "gets" will be late offers after our (and their) dreams have gone awry.  This is a whole new world and, personally, I have no idea what to expect.
seenalot

Intersting list and clearly a step up in terms of who we are competing for. Who we actually close and get is another subject entirely.

I think its going to take a while for PL coaches to completely get the hang of this and learn when to hold and when to fold on a target. I dont know how they suddenly learn to do that in 1 recruiting cycle - especially when they have been at it the "old way" at their current or similar schools for some time - ie Frank, Biddle and Andy C.  Feels like someone like Susan at BU has a leg up coming from a program with scholarships.

To a degree I think we see some of this in hoops - not sure Fran has the assistants and first hand recruiting experience to leverage the free rides he can offer.  At least the results to date have not indicated it, as we certainly have not signed a truely top flight recruit - a 2 or 3 star get.  We still seem to get the kids we used to get - not that they turn out bad by any means, just does not seem any different vs days before free rides.
Franks Tanks

Who will be the first to accept an "official" scholarship to Lafayette?

The suspense is killing me.

Lehigh's first scholly kid is the QB from Whitehall. He is a good player- very athletic- although I don't think he is as good as Polony who is now the starter at Nova.
Pards Rule

I bet Kyle Downer!! Up with Downer!
RichH

Andy

New offer by us and a head-to-head with lehigh for a 6-6 292lb OL:

http://scoutingpa.com/index.php?o...p;Itemid=85&name=micahtennant
RichH

Given our track record of head to heads on OL recruits, zI'll just concede him to you.
Bogus Megapardus

Head-to-head against every PL school, not just Lehigh, is going to change dramatically in football, I think.  I imagine that the Recruiting Thread is going to be quite active this year.  Perhaps the appeal of the PL overall, as opposed to the individual schools, will be the thing to watch.
RichH

True, PL seems to the favorite new flavor. A quick scan of possible recruits shows more names than in past yrs and higher quality. Between schollies and payscale rankings PL id well positioned to start schollies. Families can see great football, merit aid and graduates from PL schools outearn many of the Ivies. Interesting to see how first yr pans out.
Andy

Rich, maybe we've been doing well in the OL recruiting comp, but you're winning all the games!   Crying or Very sad

Guys, surely my inexperience with the scholarship recruiting world, but i thought we'd have seen more commits around the league at this point.  More accepted offers.  Weeks ago Coach T said his offers were set to go out.  Is this new offer evidence that he has moved on to his second level of recruits, at least as far as OL is concerned?

Seems a complicated game: how many too offer, how long do offers stand, at what point do you pressure the kid?  etc
RichH

I have no idea what the right strategy will be for us.  We have an excellent opportunity to market. Optimistic as to how it will be received but timing is a mystery. Is Natl signing day the the barometer? Will we be cherry picked, as some have posited?
Andy

How many schools nationwide are offreing rides worth

How many schools nationwide are offering rides/equivalencies worth $200,000?  About 2 dozen?    "Where do i sign, coach?"

And yet they choose the Delawares of the world cause kids want to play at the highest level they can or the level they feel matches their talent.
RichH

Football first decisions, unless one is of NFL calibet, have always confused me. To seek best education with best possible football I get. Football only criteria is sad.

Kids are probably sitting on the offers, not that they've moved. Every year in the paper, I see All-State and area seniors undecided on schollies from Big Six FBS schools.

I am aware that they had a top LB and WR recruit on campus for Penn and that offers started going out early September. Kids who want to get recruiting over early can choose between top FBS programs or are very aware of what school they want. No need to fret, believe me.
RichH

You see a number of kids with multiple offers just from PL schools. Many will wait to see what else they might get. How much can a coach pressure a kid with multiple offers? I know in Bball each school has  dozens of offers out for 3-4 spots. Same in football?

New guys to keep an eye on, per ESPN:

Marquise Watson, 6'0'', 255 lbs. DT, Paramus Catholic, NJ (thank you Chris Partridge)... offers from us, Maryland, Miami OH, Monmouth, Temple... interest from Boise State, Pitt, Rutgers

Watson high on Boise State... Several states are represented on Boise State’s roster. New Jersey is not one of them. They do find themselves in the top group of one prospect from the Garden State, though.

Defensive tackle Marquise Watson (Paramus, N.J./Paramus Catholic) reports a handful of offers including FBS programs Maryland, Miami (Ohio) and Temple. Colgate, Lafayette and Monmouth have also offered.

The Broncos have not, but Watson made a visit to Boise and the Broncos are among Watson’s favorites along with those three FBS programs to offer and Pittsburgh and Rutgers.

Danny Grasso, 6'3'', 210 lbs. OLB, Bergen Catholic, NJ.. offered from Navy, lists us and Colgate

Mike Kelly, 6'1'', 205 lbs. ILB, West Chester, OH Lakota West HS... offers from us, Brown, Indiana State, Princeton, Villanova, Yale... lists Harvard, Kent State, Ohio

Brother of 'Bama LB could go Ivy League... The Kelly family must be proud. One son is at the No. 1 BCS program for football. Another could be off to the No. 1 school for academics.

Lakota West (West Chester, Ohio) inside linebacker Mike Kelly is hearing from a few MAC schools, but his eyes are on the top three academic institutions in the country according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings.

Although Ivy League programs do not give out athletic scholarships, Lakota West coach Larry Cox said his 6-foot-1, 205-pound linebacker has been approached by Princeton and Yale to play football at their respective school. Harvard is evaluating Kelly now and could also do the same, Cox said.

Now that kid is an athlete.  He mostly plays RB, and absolutely has the moves and vision for the position.  He is already 190 so can easily play at 210-215 in college.  My uneducated guess is that he will play RB, but we can probably use him in several positions.

He ran for over 1,400 yards and 10 TD's as a junior and stated that he was hearing from schools like Rutgers and Temple over the summer. I can't find his senior year stats. I found a video interview of him and he appears to be a well spoken and smart young man.  Perhaps our RB of the future.

Devlin Brennan OL Our Lady of Lourdes (NY) picked up an offer from #Lafayette today.#NUC  http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Devlin-Brennan-115297

Our friend, LCLF, pointed a few "possibles" out at the rivalry game including a solid looking kid in a Lourdes varsity jacket.  LCLF gets one right every now and then.   Wink  Good job, Bill, one to keep an eye on.

In a related tweet Billy Bishop OL Iona Prep indicates LC still a possible for him.  BB will be playing in NY Cath League semi-final.

He doesn't show up in Rivals, Scout, or ESPN.  I'll admit my expertise is limited to typing his name in the databases. Does anyone know if some scholarship athletes get rated post season?  I have to doubt it.

The scholarship era will be a learning curve but I have to raise my eye brows at using a scholly on a kid who doesnt show up any of the major recruiting databases.
Andy

I feel you, edge, but who knows how those services fill their databases?  I dont think Eachus was listed on any of them either.  Smile

Offers, as you know, are usually a good measuring stick athough I dont think Kyle's have been made known.

I miss Newsday as a resourse since it went paid only.  Counting on you...
edge29

I hear ya.  But for Kyle to have starred for one of PA's most successful programs and not be on the radar of the top 3 recruiting databases has to raise an eyebrow.

Not much on Newsday.  4 commits so far to Cornell, Bryant, Princeton, and UMASS.

Most FCS recruits, scholarship or otherwise, don't show up on these sites.  They rate players and get fans of big schools all fired up about recruiting the next "5 star" guy, but they are no means a comphrehensive list of competent recruits.

Mayfield made the Inquirer and print yesterday.  Lists him as 205.  He has to be a big get... 1400 yards on 194 carries last season in a 4A title game year.  This year, 1100 yards on 170 carries. He may be what we have been missing.  Bulk up to 225 maybe and we have a bruiser.  http://mobile.philly.com/blogs/?wss=/philly/blogs&id=180851971

Good article, Dave, and then on the tablet I missed the third column entirely until p4l cited the quote. D'oh!

Roster down to 2 RBs from the 6 in the spring game, plus we've added Rabb and converted Deuce.   Should be interesting seeing what those 2 bring to the table.  Mayfield will surely see the field.  Frank's evaluation of Rabb could determine whether or not he brings in a 2nd scholarship RB this year. Do you guys think two scholarship RBs this year is possible?

Usually the "play right away" is a total lie, but it may be true in his case.  I think this kid is very talented, but we've seen way too many Freshman play lately.

Maybe Frank looks for a 2nd RB that is a walk on that can provide some depth, but I think he will hang his hat on this young man.

As Kpard said, North Penn is a perrenial Quad A power.  I think they may have the largest enrollment in PA.  In 2011 they were state runner-ups.  Per the article:

<< North Penn went 6-4, missing out on the playoffs for the first time in a decade, but its four losses were to teams — La Salle, St. Joseph’s Prep, Central Bucks South and Pennridge — with a combined record of 43-6.  >>

Very athletic and tall.

I believe we have 3 confirmed commits right now.  Rothrock, Mayfield and Staudle.  Rothrock and Staudle had offers from CAA schools (Albany is moving to the CAA next year), and Mayfield had quite a bit of interest from lower level FBS schools. I believe we would have had extreme difficulty landing these 3 young men without scholarships.  So far so good.

Edit:

Colts Neck senior wide receiver Tim Vangelas, who set several school records this season, verbally committed to Lafayette College on Monday night, according to Cougars coach Greg LaCava.

Vangelas capped his brilliant season with 10 catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-35 loss to Middletown South in the Central Jersey Group IV semifinals on Saturday. He finished with school single-season records for catches (54), receiving yards (1,041) and touchdown catches (13). His receiving yards and touchdown catches also lead the Shore Conference. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior also had interest from several other FCS programs in the Patriot League and Northeast Conference.

Vangelas a nice get. Some daunting context for all of us. ODU's commits ,22, are up on ESPN RECRUITNG NATION. 16 of them are ** or higher. Do any of us even have that many currently on roster? Will any of us get even half that number this yr?
Realize ODU situation unique but still an indication of the  gap now existing that we have to bridge.

ODU is moving to Conference-USA and will now have 85 instead of 63 rides.  I suspect this is the reason for the size and quality of the class.

OL commit Connor Staudle was selected All-Hudson Valley/Westchester at DL by MSG Varsity:

DL – Connor Staudle, Sr., Cornwall: Staudle was a Section 9 all-star last season and will probably garner all-state kudos this year. He had 50 tackles, a solid number for a defensive tackle who was double-teammed on most plays, for the two-time sectional champs. He was just as dominant on the offensive side of the ball. The 6-foot-6 tackle has a major Division I body.

I've found that many kids, parents and even HS teachers and guidance counselors have a poor understanding of liberal arts offerings at schools like Lafayette & Colgate.  Majors like Criminal Justice are especially puzzling since a person gets trained in the aspects of the law they will need to understand upon entering an academy for whatever branch of law enforcement they sign up for. Having a degree in Criminal Justice is all but irrelevant, and agencies like the FBI have a preference for degrees like accounting.   We (LAC's) in general must do a better job articulating the value of our education, but that is a another can of worms.
edmc2416

Indeed it is "another can of worms" Franks Tanks.  And an issue that should receive a lot more emphasis by the wizards in Markle.

My guess is a lot of these potential recruits haven't really thought out their career choices at the age of 17 or 18.  Either that or they have been watching too much television!

Interesting to see the comment of the Colgate Guy.
