2013 Wrap-up email

Coach sent out an email to the lax community... the bold font is my addition:

"I hope that things are going well.  I have not reached out since the end of the season and just wanted to keep you updated with the status of the program.  I hope that you are enjoying the start of summer.

As always, here is some film from our last game at Lehigh.

http://youtu.be/hhDBhj57y1g

Since the Lehigh game, the staff has been on the road at high school games and camps.  We have been watching our 2013 and 2014 commitments, as well as, actively recruiting future commitments.

The team worked hard to finish the semester strong in the classroom.  We finished with a team GPA of 3.2 for the spring.  The end of the semester came with the seniors last weekend on the Hill as students.  As we say goodbye to the seniors and thank them for their years of service, we begin the process of preparing for next season.

As a staff, we met with all of the returning players.  We discussed the season and set goals for next year, both individually and for the team.  We started the off-season by putting the leadership in place.  The captains for next year are Brendan Gover, Mike Galione, Jake Mann, and Matt Evans.  All four are seniors and will prove to be excellent leaders.

When my staff and I looked back on the season and spent time evaluating areas that need improvement, we felt that the weight room is the one area that we need to see substantial improvement in.  We have set expectations and goals for the program in the weight room and look forward to our captains to lead the team through this challenge.  As we continue to look at the season from an X's and O's standpoint, there are several areas that we feel we need to continue to focus our efforts on.

Face-Offs
I thought that Greg Rau had a solid year at the face-off X.  Next year, we will have a new face at the X with minimal experience.  We will need to continue to develop wing play.

Goaltending
I think this was the strongest part our team this year.  We will look for a strong showing from Jake Hyatt next year in his senior campaign.

Defense
This unit, as a whole, showed the most improvement.  We improved in our defending of individual match-ups, our preparation for opponents, and our ability to change schemes and make adjustments during a game.  We still have work to do, but return a solid core with Seniors Brendan Gover, Matt Evans, and Mac Ashler.

Offense
At times, our offense was very explosive.  We return all scoring from this year.  With a year of maturity under our belts, some key personnel additions, and a year of hitting the weight room hard, we expect the biggest improvement with this unit for next year.

EMO
Our extra man offense was solid all year.  We return all scoring from this unit and have high expectations for continued success.  We will work to create new schemes and continue to develop the skills of this talented unit - Brian Bock, Sonny Round, Kevin Wanke, Jake Mann, Morgan Westby, Corey Scheuerle, and John Floyd.

Turnovers
Turnovers were an issue throughout the year, turnovers on offense and turnovers on defense when clearing the ball.  This will continue to be a major focus for the program in the fall.  This fall we will continue to focus on stick work and decision making.  We feel that we started to improve on this towards the end of the season, but there is still work to be done.

Next year, we are excited about the depth we will possess at every position.  This will create competition and accountability across the board.  We feel this is critical in limiting turnovers, increasing intensity, and fostering an environment of constant improvement.  We are looking for our transfers and freshmen to make an immediate impact.  We will announce the additions to the team in September when they arrive on campus.

I wanted to thank you for all of your support this year.  I think that the program is headed in the right direction, and we are excited about next year.  This would not be possible without your help and support.  I have attached a letter from John-Frank Stubits and I regarding our fundraising goals for this year and for next year.

Coach Musci, Coach Williams, and I are in the middle of the camp circuit right now.  We are working to complete our 2014 class and recently had our first commitment in the 2015 class.  We will be on the road and on campus recruiting until early August.  We are excited about running our summer camps on Fisher Field next week.  We will be in touch soon about dates for events next fall.

Pretty fair assessment of things - and signs of hope.  Think the word transfers (inbound anyway) isn't something we have seen at LC for some time.  Hope that transfer is a FO guy as we need immediate help there.

I think we are on the right path.   He is hitting the right schools including the very strong Central NJ area where we have been unsuccessful and where conversely the brown stain has locked up some good talent.

Late start on the camp thing - and that's a crowded market already.   We need a "hook" there to get the right kids - at least until the quality of the team that LC puts on the field becomes its own selling point.

Net/net - not a step fwd in terms of the record, but a step fwd none the less.  Needs to crank in up with Loyola addition and an already strong conference.

Wonder if the older Orazietti is the transfer Coach is alluding to.  Younger, our commit, was 3rd team all Somerset county as a soph - stacks up well vs some very good talent in the senior class.

Per Newark Star Ledger

2013
Cannon - 1st Team All-State
Maltz - 2nd Team - North Jersey
Webb - 1st Team - Union County
Buchanan, Confalone, Lewis - not honored, but from #2 and #3 teams in state

2014
Lorenzen - 3rd Team - West Essex

2015
Orrazietti - 3rd Team - Somerset County

Thinking all of the above has us moving in positive direction.  Would not be surprised to see lots of PT for Cannon -talented LSM on a very good team.

Anastos committed on June 23, presumably after Coach's email.  So, I guess he is the second 2015 commit.

Good pick up - great program, good speed and stick skills.   Add a few pounds and we have potentially very good left handed (I think) attack guy.

Trying to find his stats and measurables.

Good scorer especially in big games, first team All Group IV - do not know size but seems like another nice get for the middie ranks.

Hickey's final H.S. game in state playoffs vs Westfield (NJ):

Hickey was the best player on the field and played simply a great final career game, according to [Hunterdon Central Coach Mike] Vergalito. He ended the season with 51 goals and five assists.

Fifty-one goals for a Middie on a Top 15 NJ team?  Outstanding.  Just 5 assists for a starting Middie on the same Top 15 NJ team?  It should be interesting to learn the story behind that stat.

A football article listed him as 5-9, 180 (strong safety):  http://www.app.com/article/CN/20120906/NJSPORTS0110/309060078/
