NB. There was a blurb in this morning's Philadelphia Inquirer stating that Eric Klimewski is the hardest working player in South Jersey and expected to be a force in his high school's district playoffs. It also featured is photo. He is a moose.

Thanks, 68.  "He's leading SJ in scoring with a 25.1 average."

Same kind of kid we were recruiting before scholarships - maybe he has a huge upside and is very athletic, but on the surface it sounds like another from the skinny kids who can shoot pipeline.....

Wish I could argue otherwise, seen. No response from the first three offered, on to Plan B, I guess, a young man with no other reported offers.
NewXbo

I haven't seen him play live yet but expect to see him this summer. His high school team, LaSalle College High School did make it to the PIAA class AAAA finals this past season, I think he had 8 or 10 points but they lost to an undefeated team. He also plays for the Jersey Shore Warriors the same team that one of this years recruits, Eric Stafford, played for.
Andy

We offered a Lithuanian player today Paulius Zalys 6-7 SF from Perkiomen School, his first offer. Another Jersey Shore Warrior player.

Offer tweeted by Deirunas Visockas who, xbo has informed me, has a venture representing foreign players.

You don't seem to like any of the players we are looking at. Perhaps you could give us a list of players you think we should be recruiting.
seenalot

To the contrary - I like Zalys - just not sure we get him.  But, you are correct re: Krmpotich.  And I like Klimewski a lot.  We need some wide(r) bodies who can provide some physical play underneath.

PS - as I look at these last names would also like a Smith, Jones and Brown.
Andy

When your team hasn't won a championship in 15 years and losses to a conference member by 34 we fans should be forgiven for a bit of sarcasm.

But, this could be the year!

BTW, BU has 2 2015 verbals and 18 remaining open offers.  They've offered 6 or 7 2016s and a few 2017 just to contrast styles.
Pard4Life

I'll admit, I've kind of given up on Lafayette basketball...  Sad

It will be a replay of the past dozen years or so:

4 shooters on the floor at all times.

Out-rebounded and out-muscled in the paint.

Will win some games we shouldn't (just to build your hopes).

Will lose some games we shouldn't (just to give you a reality check).

Contender, but no trophy.

And that, folks, is Lafayette basketball.
bethlehempard

The only surprise win last year was over American, unless one contends that all the D1 wins were upsets. Next year will be better? It has to be. More production is needed underneath. Just like a lot of years.
The program -- adjust for issues all you  want it doesn't change the bottom line -- needs to turn around.
We are 0 for the 21st century in 20-win seasons and titles.

I met Zalys, who was with Deirunas, near the end of the season. He's a little thin but plays aggressively. As I mentioned to you Andy, Deirunas started his own business in NYC.  He recruits European players to come to America, for both academics and athletics. I think he will be a great asset for coach O.

Have you cleared northern New York State of all it's trees yet?

I had to work today but I got to see him play one game , reminded me of Tony Johnson. Ironically, he wore #3. He handles well and see's the court.
Nice penetration on his drives, gave the ball up most of the time. He did finish on his own a couple of times. I only remember him taking two  outside shots. Quick feet and hands on defense. Hope we can get him.

I also had a chance to talk to former Lafayette assistant and now head coach and AD at DeSales, Scott Coval.  He tells me there have been some pickup games down at DeSales with a lot of local guys, including Darren Hilliard, (Nova), Mackey McNight (Lehigh), Husek (Holy Cross) along with Nick Linder, Monty Boykins and Dan Trist. He said Trist is tearing it up.

CoBL's take on our 2015 recruiting needs:

Lafayette Leopards
Current Open Scholarships: 0
Expected graduations: Alan Flannigan (PF), Seth Hinrichs (G/F), Joey Ptasinski (SG), Dan Trist (PF)
Biggest need(s): Power forward, shooting guard
Local Targets: David Krmpotich (PF)
Already committed: Paulius Zalys (F/Perkiomen School, Pa.)

This is also a big class for Fran O’Hanlon, who’s got a few good young pieces in the program but is going to have a lot to replace out of this group of rising seniors.

They’re certainly going to go after a big body considering the only true center on the team, Nate Musters, will be graduating in 2016. Power forward Dan Trist will be a senior this year, though they’ve got incoming freshman Matt Klinewski, another 6-8 big man, to help soften the blow at the power forward slot.

Clearly the biggest loss will be the graduation of small forward Seth Hinrichs, a 6-7 wing who makes over 45 percent of his 3-point shots and is a crafty scorer inside the arc as well. They have lanky wing Eric Stafford coming in this year, but Stafford–while a good shooter–isn’t the overall scorer that Hinrichs is, though he’ll help replace the perimeter scoring of 3-point specialist Joey Ptasinski.

The only commitment for the class is Zalys, and he fits somewhere in between Hinrichs and Trist. The 6-7 forward is a better rebounder and more of a post threat than Hinrichs, who does a lot of his damage from the perimeter. But he’s not a wide-shouldered big man like Trist; he can step out to the 3-point arc and knock down a shot, and he’s got a decent handle for a ’4′ as well.

With point guard Nick Lindner the entrenched starter at the position for the next three years, O’Hanlon and his staff will need to go after a high-scoring guard in the mold of Bryce Scott, who will be a junior this season. If they can bring in some size and some scoring touch, look for the Leopards to stay in contention in a balanced Patriot League.////

NY Small Forward Picks Up 5ive Offers

Mike Libert
NYCHoops.net Staff Writer

It's been a whirlwind last month for 6'5" wing Lonnie Rivera (Don Bosco Prep, NJ '15).

Lonnie Rivera The Spring Valley, NY native has spent the past 30 days in Puerto Rico, playing with the Puerto Rican National Team. It was a huge honor for Rivera, and getting the chance to play with some of the best players around has already helped his recruitment with 5 new offers recently coming in for the versatile wing.

The experience of playing with the Puerto Rican National Team was almost something Rivera didn't get to have. He actually had no idea about the team until he was approached by someone who saw him play and noticed his last name. He was told about a tryout and made the team, and got to experience something he could never have dreamed about.

"The atmosphere was amazing, it was a great experience to play with and against some of the top Puerto Rican players, and if feel it's helped me grow as a player." Rivera said.

He came back just in time to shine for the B.C. Eagles at the Basketbull Summer Championships this weekend in Springfield, Massachusetts, and Eagles head coach Bobby Rahn explained how crazy the timing for him to suit up here was for Rivera.

"He got back from Puerto Rico on Friday, we picked him up, and drove up here to Massachusetts to play, there was no break," Rahn said.

That he was able to shine the way he did with so little rest makes his play even more impressive, and that could be a part of the reason he is becoming a bit of a hot commodity for college coaches, with Rahn saying that Rivera has landed 5 offers recently.

"NJIT, Columbia, Cornell, Colgate, and Winthrop have all offered Lonnie," Rahn said.

Rivera added that he has visited both NJIT and Columbia, and hopes to schedule a trip to Winthrop for August if possible. He would like to decide he said before his season at Don Bosco starts up, but says if he has to wait 'til afterwards, he is fine with that as well.

The fact that Rivera is not just a 3 now, and that he has become a much better shooter with an ability to handle the ball as well has really transitioned him from a good player, to a great player, and Rahn sees in Rivera a prospect with a high upside and one who is just about to take off.

"He has a great shot, but it's that ability to put the ball on the floor now, along with his strong work in the classroom that I believe is going to take him to another gear."
As of Sunday, July 20th 2014, Lonnie Rivera has added offers from American and Lafayette.

Actually I think it's six - four of whom have yet to play:

-  Austin Carroll (Rutgers) - has turned out to be a bust
-  Pee Wee Gardner (SF Austin) - obviously very good
-  Jonathan Davis (GWU) - eligible this year; never played much at GW.
-  Kevin Panzer (Nevada) - likely starter at center this year but a perimete player
-  Leon Tolksdorf (UConn) - from Germany; has to sit out this year.
-  Paris Maragkos (GWU) - from Greece; has to sit out this year.

Over the years, AU's success/failure rate on transfers from higher-level schools is probably 50/50.   AU figures to be good this year - although losing Wroblicky is huge.   After this year, they may take a step back however - unless a couple of the transfers turn out to be very good.

I sat next to Klimewski(sp?) at the football game last night which he left at half time. He attended with his family. He is tall but slighter than he appeared on line and in photos. He does look like he has broken his nose several times thereby supporting his rep as a tough rebounder. He is sturdy but not overly large or bulky.

Evans' HS coach for the last 3 years, btw, was Jaye Andrews.   Andrews played for Bucknell from 1981 to 1985 and was the ECC POY in 84-85.  Also drafted by the 76ers.  Andrews continues to teach at Greenhill but stepped down as coach this past May after 10 years at Greenhill which were preceded by a long coaching run at Landon.   Andrews' daughter, btw, is part of Bucknell's soccer recruiting class for next season.

Andrews also participated in one of the most painful BU losses in history, when they lost the 1984 ECC championship game in OT when Rider's big man, who had hit 30% on FTs for the year, went 15-16 down the stretch, including two that banked and all that were ugly.

The 84 game was not a big upset. Rider was 20-11 overall and 11-5 in the league. I believe Kevin Thomas is the Rider center who you are referring to.  The bigger upset for BU was 1985 when they were upended by 12-19 overall and 6-8 league Lehigh. Of course, LU had probably the best two players ever, Mike Polaha and Darren Queenan.

Yes it was Thomas. Unfortunately I was at both games. Might not have been a big upset but definitely was an upset, given that BU had a league record of 14-2 that year.  As for the LU loss, that was admittedly a bigger upset.  Bucknell's Chris Seneca threw in a very long shot at the buzzer to tie it but unfortunately the 3-point rule didn't take effect until two years later.  BU fouled out a few key players and lost in OT

Bucknell did get some measure of revenge in the 1987 tournament when they took out LU 103-100 in two OTs despite Queenan's 49 points.  Queenan and Polaha were great players but not the best LU players if CJ is included.

Evans is variously listed as 6-3, 6-5 or 6-6, so I guess you take your choice for the moment.  He is also listed as 187 lbs. - or 178.  The Greenhill School is a "private day school" near Dallas with 1,200 students in grades K thru 12.  It is therefore not very large and does not play in a league with the larger Texas schools.  If you check the photo galleries here

http://www.greenhill.org/Page/Ath...Hornet-Athletics-/Boys-Basketball

you will see some photos of Evans' signing day ceremony.

I haven't found any stats, but Evans was his team's MVP in both his sophomore and junior seasons.  Checking the schedule, Greenhill plays mostly against private and Christian schools.

We all wish the kid nothing but the best, but it would appear that he will have a sizable adjustment to play at the D-1 level.  We all remember Jared Mintz who came to Lafayette from a similar background.  I seem to recall that he was a fair to middling hoopster after our friend 137 and other members of the loyal opposition laughed themselves into near unconsciousness after his signing.  Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Come on Carney, this is the kind of kid you say we never get. As a junior, he averaged 16 ppg ,3 assts, & 5 rbds. He played AAU for Texas Select, a team that's sent players to Vanderbilt, Colorado State, UTEP, and Baylor.  It appears he is 6'5, 180#. Maybe he'll be 6.6 next year. He can shoot the 3, drive to the hoop and rebound. Looks like he can play the 2 or 3. Based on the video I watched, I think its a good recruit.

What determines the adjustment is less the H.S. and more the AAU competition.  I have no idea who his AAU team played, but it sounds like they had good personnel.    FWIW, he had decent offers:  Colgate, LIU, S.F. Austin, Texas State, and Dartmouth.  Not great, but a lot better than no offers.

As for Mintz, there were a few who were very down on his signing on this board - but I don't recall being one of them.   I likely wasn't high on him since I knew nothing about him - but I don't think my attitude fit your description.

Fran offered another 2015 yesterday - 6-9 230 PF Jack Lieb.  Unfortunately so did about 6 other schools. The kid is suddenly red hot.  If we dont get him will Fran hold this scholarship for next year?  It appears that Zalys remains committed to LC.

Kyle Stout of Parkland, verbal commitment for 2016

Good news, although not a surprise. Kyle and two other Parkland players and an Emmaus player attended more games than Carney. Its good to see some local players in multiple sports considering Lafayette.

Alas, the hi-lited passage is so true.  My wife knows that she cannot disturb me me on Saturdays in the fall.  She is not nearly as forgiving on the other 354 days of the year.  That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Keith Groller did a good story on Kyle Stout in today's Mourning Crawl:

http://www.mcall.com/sports/varsi...sketball-0506-20150506-story.html

His high school coach, Andy Stephens, says this in the article:

"Once Kyle matures and grows into his body, he's really going to be a heck of a player. … It just may take some time,"

Probably another project, but I guess that's our position on the recruiting wheel when it comes to front court talent.
Kpard

"Stout shot 47 percent from the field, including 43 percent from 3-point range. He made a team-high 52 3-pointers overall and was an 83 percent shooter from the foul line. "

Enough said for FOH.

A lot to like, runs the court well, decent hops, outside touch, knows his way around the basket, blocks shots, rebounds. We got to get him to Campus Pizza to put on a few pounds. Once again LCLF on top of it.

Yes a good find. Some background from last year:

http://www.d1nation.com/news_article/show/401894?referrer_id=1029700

Some inside defensive presence in addition to Klinewski would be great.

I really like this kids game,he will only get better with FO as his coach...The optimist in me says we had a very good recruiting year!

Like this kid - wonder why still around at this late date.  Badly need a point guard in next years class.  Been spoiled with Tony and now Nick - time to reload.

Finally

Finally we've recruited and admitted a rim protector. With our slow defenders allowing drives to the basket, we've needed somebody to defend the basket for decades. This guy could be the one.
Andy

Barlow's offer has been listed since at least last August by verbalcommits. Maybe the offer to Lieb gave Barlow a bit of motivation to visit and commit. Nice recruiting job.  Glad he's with us.

Hey, wasn't Dunkum a 7 footer 3 months ago?  Now he's 6-9?

I hear he's 7' 4" Wink who really cares if he can rebound and score....He has big paws and a large wingspan. FOH has recruited some athlete's in this class with quickness and hops and we know Carney likes a lot of hops  Laughing

Because at 7 foot he might rebound, intimidate, block shots, etc. better than at 6-9.  There's a  reason they inflate kids height and weight on these recruiting sites.

Thanks, Leop Loyalist. 6-11 by ESPN, 6-10 in our announcement and several other sources, 6-9 by Mr. Verlin.  My mistake, I guess he never was listed at 7'.  Trying to find video of Sam for Kpard, I'm failing.

Gosh, we will need LCLF to retrain you. Try this: www.hudl.com/athlete/2232700/sam-dunkum

We got the official signing announcement back in Dec, kp, and the original 3 are on the roster. Awaiting official word on the fourth Hoffman replacement.

Yes we did. I am getting old and forgetful.

Not sure about Dunkum, but, the other 3 appear to be quicker and more athletic than we normally see. This could be another great class.

Also, just checked the roster which indicates another guard. 6'-0" Jacob Orender from Jacksonville, FL?  A walk on?

Good pick-up on that, kp. Wasn't on the roster as of last night. Mom apparently is/was  the president of the WNBA. (and former WBL player, Donna Geils)

Watching his video, he plays a lot like Nick Lindner. Probably his successor in two years.

Awesome pickup! I really love this recruiting class!

How can anyone get excited about a recruit who is unlikely to see more than 100 minutes of playing time over his four year career. At 6 feet tall, he'll offset the tallest bench in the PL: four 6'10" guys who FOH for some reason will never play.

huh ? We have a need for a backup PG and looking at his video this is a great walkon pickup...granted most of FOH other walkons are just practice players but this kid shows ability to play D1! All four of our Scholarship recruits are more athletic than previous FOH recruits.
Andy

I' m with you as usual, Leopard Man.  We needed a good class and Fran seems to have put one together.  Sam remains a question mark IMO due to no jr year film and darn little sr year. OTOH, we have new 2015 film on Barlow:

Yikes he plays above the rim! Shot blocker ,runs the floor, improving offensive skills. Would love Sam and Tyler playing together in a high low system...Zalys playing the 3 and Evans appears to be a wing guard. All of these recruits on film look to be active on defense, it's going to be a fun season watching these young athletes evolve into D1 players.

Good news!
bethlehempard

The Corpus Christie Caller-Times on Barlow: military family .. He likes Easton .. Averaged 16.5 points and 13.8 rebounds last season .. Has been dunking since middle school .. His team is 51-20 since he arrived, he's moved a lot because of the military .. He visited Baylor and UTSA ...
The paper has a paywall and I'm not somewhere where I can cut-and-paste the article ...
They says he's 6-8 and he has been improving perimeter shooting
"I take a lot of pride in my rebounding" he said.
I like him already.

***Corrected school visited to UTSA, University of Texas at San Antonio.

This may be the most athletic kid we've ever seen in maroon?! Lock him in the weight room for the summer. I hope that the athletic dept. confirms it soon.

I want to see him play against people his own size before I start throwing praise his way.  If would be nice for a change to see someone on our squad dunk the basketball.

we brought in 4 recruits that can sky.

Agree with Refrider, but, this class appears more athletic than previous recruits. Let's hope they stay healthy and develop into another championship squad.
