59-51 over LU

Shocked and amazed.
pardfan

If we can win today against a good team like Lehigh, then how did we lose all the others (2-8 in last ten going into today's game) in the last five weeks--many of which were not even close contests?  (The effort has always been there, I think.)

It was a hard fought but not well played game. LU shot 32%, we shot 39%.  Poor shooting results in rebounds: we snared 44, Lehigh 43. Three point shooting 40% for us, just 14% for LU. Lots of TOs: 15 for LU, 19 for us. The good news is we probably secured a home play-in game.

The secret of this win is no secret- tenacious defense. We made them play worse than we played and we played well at the end when they did not make plays or hit shots. Can we get to 500% and advance in tournament ? To do so we must play better defense than our opponent and offense with rhythm and determination  - first in the play-in at home and then on the road . Yesterday was a coaching win for Diane Nolan of whom I have been very critical .Consistency is the key - even a blind chicken gets a kernel of corn. Also I was dismayed by her post game comments about the season having its ups and downs. I would have preferred her to say something indicating that although  the season has been disappointing  this win was something to build on for the tournament. She seems to accept the poor play ,inconsistency and overall mediocrity displayed over the  league season. Her attitude was too accepting of losing although she did praise the "young ladies ' " play .

".. too accepting of losing.." is an enormous problem at LC.

I think it was 25 years ago I was there when we had a final game at Lehigh, title to the winner, and we lost but it was a great game. We probably haven't had as meaningful a game since. I defer to those who follow the women more closely than I do now and memory plays tricks. Beating Pitt was great and now and then we have torpedoed the Brown.
I'm still in Nolan's corner for what it's worth. I can't forget the lost eight (?) years.

January 12, 2011, Diane Nolan's first Lehigh game, we win 57-54.  The team leaves the floor, goes to the Stabler  locker room,  Nolan comes in, Panto filming this, the team is screaming and pounding on the lockers, the look on her face was amazement.

She who shall not be named was 4 - 12  against Lehigh over the previous 8 years.

Our last women's championship was 1987 when we beat Lehigh 60-58 in the ECC championship game in Hempstead NY. We lost the next two ECC championship games (1988 to Drexel @ Rider, 1989  to Delaware @ Towson.)

1996-97.  Lehigh won in OT at Stabler over Lafayette and went on to lose by a ton to UConn. 103-35.

24 TURNOVERS vs Colgate?? 37 points?? Horrid.
The Maroon

It took a comeback for the ages and a YouTube moment to beat them at home - not surprising they lost up there.

You could tell from the feed they were giving at the men's game that the Cotterell Court was providing all of the atmosphere of a pick-up game. It's hard to play there, but still...

5 years in - this program is in pretty bad shape. League play results - particularly in the second half of the league season - have been consistently ugly.  Confounding it are these out of the blue victories - like last Saturday vs. Lehigh and the earlier win against Army - that make you wonder if it's personnel or coaching.

Yes - the good people in sports marketing will have a spin such as "this is the best two year span in terms of victories since "(the 90's?)" - but I think we were all hoping for more at this point. This is a Senior-laden team, was a top-half finish a ridiculous goal for me (us) to have? We can't even blame BU and LM on this one.

So are we going to have Diane, Fran and Frank's retirement all in one year or can we stretch out the party?
