A Question About Our FreshmenOur old friend and frequent contributor to this board, bison137, has used his Bucknell forum to speculate about the All-League and All-Rookie teams. He names 7 or 8 freshmen as possibilities for the All-Rookie team, non of them Pards. One would think that a program like ours that has been so far down needs to see some real talent coming in the front door to start moving up. I'm not real well versed in this, so I'm asking some of our more hoops-wise contributors for their opinions of our first year players. In particular, are they not on 137's rookie hit list because they are just not good enough or is it more because all of the senior contributors have limited their playing time?

I think you answered your own question. We have five seniors who have worked hard over four years against an uneven playing field to make themselves into a solid team. On the other hand, we have three freshman who have worked hard this year learning Coach O's offense and learning to play defense against players who are stronger and quicker than anyone they played against in high school. So which senior(s) would you sit to play one of the freshman?
Next season will be a whole new ball game and if you want to evaluate the quality of our recruits, you will have plenty of opprtunity then.

They are not on my list because of lack of playing time. The only freshman who has seen much time at all in PL play in Mintz and I don't think he's shown enough to get into the group of eight who I listed.

Xbo is right (as is 137) and it was demonstrated yesterday PM. While I would have loved to see more of the four of them this year I am happy with what I have seen (someone besides me got 20 extra pounds for Benbow) and am ok with what I have seen to be comfortable with guard play for next year. Hope to heck Willen steps in early and both Mintz and Koltun keep developing - Gruner came out of no where this year, need another one of those for 2008/9.

VisockasI think Visockas is all-rookie caliber, but because he is playing behind an experienced backcourt he hasn't had the minutes he might have on another league team.
I haven't been real impressed by Keefer the two times I saw him. I really liked what I saw of Beinert from Holy Cross, but I only saw him in Easton. Venezia was okay. Veazey would definitely get my vote and I agree on O'Brien.
It's a tough for me because I've only seen most of the guys once.

I think every one of our froshmen have been on the DL at some time or another this year. (welcome to D1 ball!) Wheeler didn't suit for LU. With the senior heavy team we have Fran's been doing what he can to win games. Next year will be very, very interesting. We'll have only one senior - Brown, Three juniors - Gruner, Kari, & Koltun (needs to make a quantum leap), and eight youngsters. Mintz has gotten some good minutes and get's his hands on a lot of balls. Visockas is a scorer and I guy who I think can create his own shot. Wheeler seems to be Fran's prototypical guard with size, sees the floor, good shot, good head. I've not seen enough of Benbow to know what he can do. Saw him against NJIT, but, can't judge much from that 0-29 team. Wheeler and Benbow could definitely use a high protien diet and weight room. All that said, if these guys make the same improvement that Gruner made from yr 1 to yr 2 (which I never would have expected) it'll be another fun year!

I don't expect to spend much time in 1st place next year, but it appears that we have stopped circling the bowl. Next year's recruiting class (Class of 2013) needs an inside presence.

Don't forget Jeff Kari who played especially well against LU.
