Adult film actress speaks at Lafayette

Miriam Weeks, adult film actress and Duke univ student, spoke at LC last night on her experiences as a porn actress, how she was received and treated, and her decision. It was part of Sex and Gender Equality Week.

I Find it interesting that you can't have a beer on campus but we have a porno actress come and address the students. What does that say to women? Just a thought. I found it odd.

Sometimes you can be so openminded your brains fall out. In this case which
administrators takes ownership of this proud addition to our academic program??

Would that be the woman who sings the National Anthem at some of the basketball games?

The one that has to read the words off a card?

There's a link on the college website to this disturbed young woman's "story."  She places the blame for her decision on her parents, and their inability to fund her education.  Can you imagine?  The college can pay this whore with Lafayette money, but it wont be my money. Another reason to withhold donations to their campaign.
Franks Tanks

What a joke. Thousands of college students struggle to fund their education, and don't turn to porn.  Duke also offers excellent financial aid to those who need it, so her story is total BS.  She is an attention seeker. Go do porn, do whatever the hell you want, just shut up about it.

What I find funny is that certain folks on campus treat this as some sort of intellectual discussion, while it is anything but.  It is a opportunity for a bunch of self important blow hards to get together and pat themselves on the back for being so accepting and open minded. Look at us, we are so smart because we listened to a porn star speak.  Get a freaking clue.
ed65

The fact that you prudes and moralists object to the porn chick speaking at the College surprises me!!! Don't you know about porno-chic????!!!

I'm surprised that the Feminazis did not raise a stink about this.  Oh, I forgot, LC is a "Liberal" Arts school so I guess we like porn!!!!!!

Seriously, I was very surprised they would pay this chick money to speak - given the seriousness of the messes in the Middle East, Ukraine, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, the list is endless.

Did they take the story down?? I don't see it. Maybe there is sanity in Markle these days??

Did find some things abut sex week including a workshop on the misunderstanding of BDSM. Can we please close this department…please!!???
Ironiccally the porn star was speaking as the keynote speaker on thursday in COLTON CHAPEL. Roald Bergerthon must be turning in his grave!!! Good Grief!!

With the recent NFL exposure and the attention we have finally gotten on women being abused and then we promote this topic? Not only is it a bad topic but it's very demeaning of women. Just my thoughts but then I'm pretty conservative.

I'll give the girl the benefit of the doubt and assume she was abused. It's unfortunate what she has been through but just don't think we should have promoted this on campus, and in SEX Week to make it worse. Is this the kind of sex we are promoting? What does this say about our view of women?  And then they send out an email to parents promoting it. Did they think parents were going to like this? I can't believe someone signed off on this.

Come on, Fly.  LC is a "Liberal" Arts school!!! This is what Liberal Arts schools do!!!  Rather than talking about serious topics like the dire situations in Ukraine, Iran, Europe or Syria, etc., we f__k around with, well let's face it, a disturbed young woman who is involved in f__king!!!!!!!!!

I think this is another example of the liberal political correctness that infects so many academic institutions these days. (yes, I am pretty conservative, too).

I just keep shaking my head......about the state of our athletic programs, about the "thinking" that goes into decisions like this one, where someone someplace said "yeah, that's a good idea...lets have a porn star speak to students" ....because it benefits LC's reputation  in EXACTLY what way....please someone tell me just one way....

Jeez had my fraternity done that we'd have been kicked out so fast my head would have spun.  We should have thought to do it in the name of a liberal education........and served wine and cheese instead of being on tap.

I give up.  Back to shaking my head.

I guess you guys missed this one last year. It was fairly big news. It's not quite a black and white case. It's fairly interesting actually. I don't see what the big deal is. I think it's a fascinating example of how she was just a regular college student, she was outed, and now she's viewed as a monstrosity.  Sure her motives and decisions are not exactly sound but why should we be on the verge of stoning her? How come the women get shamed in prostitution stings and males are viewed way less harshly?  Women are not exactly driving the demand here... just sayin'

Couldn't care less.   The objection is to bringing her here and paying her.  There must be someone more worthy.

I agree with FT, this is about the folks who brought her to campus.  "Look what we did!"

Pard4life, I am not stoning her at all. I dont hold it against her. i dont care. i dont know her. just dont feel we should be promoting that. I hope she gets things worked out. Its kinda sad.

When I was in college I knew girls that danced topless. Most of the frat guys knew a few. Years ago (and probably still) the big clubs in atlanta and Houston were filled with college girls. The Gold Club and the Cheetah in Atlanta looked like a soroity mixer from ga Tech. They could make several hundred dollars a night. there is a girl today that is a lawyer with IBM and she was a dancer in college. But i think there is  difference between dancing topless and being an adult porn actress.

Apparently not.  I looked her up on Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belle_Knox

and she just found a novel way to pay her $60,000 per year tuition bills.

The article mentions that she was earning $1,200 per session when outed.  I wonder how much she was paid by our alma mater, and whose budget it came from.

For me this thing keeps getting worse. The College held this thing in Colton Chapel, and it was crowded. So we had a pornography speaker in our chapel.

Talking with people that were there, her views were different. Feels like she is being discriminated against, that her job is normal.

Well fly, with all due respect, Ms. Weeks is simply "singing the song" of Porno Chic.  In some very Liberal (but not Feminist) Circles, porn is deemed ok and quite normal.  Should LC have brought her in and paid her?  Absolutely not.  The whole thing smacks of the deservedly negative perceptions and reputations of liberal arts colleges.  Shame on the College, the Faculty, the  Board and the Administration.  It reminds me of the hue and cry of colleges trying to deal with presentations of Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues of a few years ago.
bethlehempard

Alan Ginzburg read poems at Colton Chapel about 35 years ago. Graphic stuff. Memorable though and it wasn't real crowded. I'm glad I went.
This recent speaker doesn't really bother me. I wouldn't have bothered to go The selection does seems a bit forced, even pat, and she doesn't represent any school of thought, but so be it.
seenalot

..."school of thought", I believe that would be capitalism, but didnt see the Economics Dept on the list of sponsors.

Its insulting to have had it in the Chapel and its plain stupid to have had her at all.  Name me one positive take away for LC as a result of having had her - one?  And no, I dont need 137 to opine on the subject.
flyfisher

I understand President Byerly got a lot of negative feedback from alumni on this. The guy from the College that put this on is a differnt kind of guy. I still can't figure out why they did it and what they hoped to gain from it.
ed65

Well said, Fly.
flyfisher

I'll say this, Byerly came to the football banquet. That doesn't happen often. Pretty cool. She said all the right things but if you knew how much Friends of Football did for the program and how much the school doesn't do it would make you wonder. I am not sure if we would have football without F of F.

No we wouldn't have football, and not without FM Kirby either... he likely had a huge say.
ed65

Kudos to Friends of Football.  They do an outstanding job.

There was a time that Ms. Weeks' appearance at Lafayette would have been considered edgy and even a gutsy source of pride for our little College on the Hill.  But, with everything else that's going on in Pardsville, this is just one more piece of a totally muddled and indefensible mess.

Dr. Byerly is well into year two of her tenure.  I've always thought that it takes about 5 years to get a real sense of direction from College leadership.  Still hoping that she's the one to right this ship.

Agreed, however to date I am generally pleased. Funding of athletic operations is still an issue for me ( Recruiting budget, asst coaches, demands for accountability). However, I think she has navigated the frat issue, humanized the office, and seems willing to listen. Good two year start.
ed65

Agree with Lafalum and I would add:

Alison listens.  That is a an adjective that you could not apply to her two predecessors.
BackintheDay

In her 18 months, Alison has spoken to more alumni than Dan E. Boy spoke to in 8 years.  She has also put engineering back into Lafayette's title of LA and Engineering School. She also attends athletic events with sincere interest and support.  She's doing the right things, but needs to time to turn the corner.  Looking good so far.  Kudos to her and best wishes for her to continue her work.

Well said "Back."

Absolutely - though the call for Ms. Weeks' appearance seems to have been more "follow-the-leader" than "lead the way" in this instance.  Still, one hardly can object to the presentation if it gives students a legitimate educational point of view.  In a similar vein there are those who opine that "allowing" art students to sketch unclad models in class is immoral and/or objectifying, but hopefully that's not going to stop (most) colleges from continuing the practice.  It all comes down to politics - where volume, proximity and repetition get the most attention.

ed65 wrote:

Dr. Byerly won't agree with every viewpoint presented nor should she.  But it seems to me that she listens, acknowledges and demonstrates that she understands.  She's neither aloof nor precious.  She's funny and appropriately quirky and she's very comfortable in her own skin. Those qualities distinguish her from her predecessors, IMHO.
