Women's Basketball Announces Class of 2012

Three players set to join Leopards in fall of 2008

Feb. 7, 2008

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette women's basketball head coach Tammy Smith has announced the three members of the class of 2012. The class includes two players from Pennsylvania as well as one who hails from Michigan. All three will join the Leopards next fall.

"We are extremely excited about the class of 2012," Smith said. "They are quality student-athletes who will be a great complement to Lafayette College and our women's basketball program. They are from quality high school programs with great coaches. All three are athletic, have good basketball intelligence, work hard and are proven winners."

Melissa Downey (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) is the first Pennsylvania native in the group. Downey, a 5-8 point guard, is a four-year starter at Cardinal O'Hara High School. She is currently averaging 4.6 points per game to go along with 3.4 rebounds and six steals per outing. Her Cardinal O'Hara team is 19-2 and undefeated in the Catholic League. Downey's squad won the Philadelphia Catholic Championship her freshman and sophomore seasons and she has earned Second Team All-Delaware County honors during her high school career.

Downey is also a standout soccer player, having lettered all four years while winning the Philadelphia Catholic Championship as a sophomore. She was also tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-Catholic Team each of her four seasons. In addition, Downey has earned academic honors every quarter at Cardinal O'Hara.

Sarah McGorry (Doylestown, Pa./Mount St. Joseph Academy), a 6-0 forward, is the second Pennsylvania player to join the Leopards. She is a four-year starter at Mount St. Joseph Academy. This season, she is averaging 15 points and seven rebounds per game and scored her 1,000th career point. As a junior, she averaged 13 points and six rebounds per game while also shooting 80 percent from the free throw line last season. Following her junior season, she was named a Catholic Academy All-Star. She has served as captain of her team as a junior and a senior.

Like Downey, McGorry is also a multi-sport athlete, earning four varsity letters in volleyball as a middle hitter. She was a Catholic Academy Volleyball All-Star from 2005-07 and received the Coaches Award in 2007. In addition, McGorry lettered in track for two years while competing in the 400 and 800 meter events and was named Rookie of the Year in 2005.

McGorry is also active in other extracurricular activities, serving as class secretary and treasurer and participating in Operation Smile-Kids Helping Kids.

The final recruit, Alexandra Serowoky (Dearborn, Mich./Ladywood), hails from Dearborn, Mich. and is a four-year letterwinner at Ladywood High School. Serowoky, who stands at 6-1, is a versatile player, seeing time as both at both the forward and center positions. She missed half of the 2005 season with a broken metatarsal but still managed to average five points and six rebounds per game. The following season, she earned a spot on the Free Press Top 25 Preseason List and was later named an All-Catholic League and All-Area player. Prior to the start of this season, she earned a No. 17 ranking on the Free Press Preseason List.

Serowoky is also a standout track athlete. She competes in the high jump, 4 x 400 relay and open 400 events. Serowoky was the Catholic League high jump champion in 2006 and was also a 2005 state qualifier in the mile relay.

Serowoky has served as class president as a junior and senior and is also the co-editor of Ladywood's yearbook. In addition, she has earned academic honors every year, has been a scholar-athlete from 2004-06 and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Currently in the midst of their 2007-08 season, the Leopards have compiled an overall record of 12-10, including a 4-3 mark in Patriot League games. Lafayette has seven league games remaining on its schedule before the Patriot League Tournament opens on March 8.
