All FIJI team...

If recent reports are ture and FIJI is no longer on Lafayette's campus, I thought this might be an appropriate time to look at some of the notable football players who called Phi Gamma Delta home. The obvious ones that leap to mine are as follows...

Erick Marsh
Tom Costello
Tom Kirchoff
Pete Ohenigian
Trey Flood
Tim Monceman
Kevin McManus
Eddie Albert
Doug Hines
Jim Goff
Craig Hansen
Gavin Morrisey
Jeff Denning
Dan Bengle
Rob Hneleski

That's all I can think of right now on this busy Monday morning. How about it Frank's Tanks? I know I missing some younger guys. Carney, how about you? Can you recall any FIJI's that played during the leather helmet days?

Mike Joseph, Mark Reardon and John Troxell were all Figi's in the 80's (and members of the Lafayette coaching staff at one time or another).

Tony Giglio, Lafayette's first 1,000 yard rusher, was also a Fiji in the early 70's.

Dozens of Lafayette football players from the early 70's to about 2004 were Fiji's.

When T-delt got the axe around 2001 the whole FB players pledging and controlling the two houses lost some momentum, and we probably have a handful of FB players in houses now.

I understand times change, but I graduated a few yers ago and my college experience would have been less memorbale without fraternity membership.   It's a shame current and future Lafayette students will not experience the fraternity system, and we are losing a unique piece of Lafayette College history and culture.

I recall some hoopsters from Phi Gam back in the days before time began, but no footballers come to mind.  The major fratty lodges for this specialty back in those days were DU, which seemed to load up on the "grunts" (linemen, linebackers, tight ends), and Phi Delta Theta which seemed to attract the pretty boys (RBs, QBs, wideouts) - you know, the ones who kept their uniforms clean.

If it is true this was a long time coming. Quite frankly I am surprised FIJI lasted this long. THe Egg Heads in the administration have always viewed fraternities as a not so necessary evil. They've only got a few more to go to rid the campus of the greek system once and for all. It's a shame.

As for the specific incident, as I understand it some evil seniors (as in over 21) were caught with beer (can you imagine?) in their room in the house. This is against campus policy as well as directives from the National. According to the school this was the proverbial "straw".

Whatever...they'd have tossed them if they painted the shutters the wrong color at this point. The administration had a goal in mind and they weren't going to be denied. End of an era if it is true.

If, as advertised, Phi Gam bites the dust, we will be down to 5 active fraternities, and the stated 25% male participation in the Greek system will drop to probably below 20%.

(There are 6 active sororities, and the stated female participation in the Greek system is 40%.)

I'm having trouble with this.  Even if you don't buy it, can someone please explain exactly how/why suppression/persecution of the Greek system is perceived to benefit the College?

Carney, see the string of posts in "Whatever else" and the quotes from the Alumni mag I posted. It explains  the attitude!! There is also a feeling that you can't have alumni with split loyalties and and contents of their  pockets  not going the direction they want it to.
But I go back to my theme of the last 5 years. This BOT leadership must go!! I can't think of one major decision, athletic scholarships, investment management, the greek system, 2/3 faculty load, 4/4 load for students , increases in tuition larger than inflation, that did the school any good.  They were on the wrong side in each case.

Freedom of speech but only for right thinking PC kids who , of course can only enjoy the full college experience by not experiencing what the administration deems inappropriate for today's college kids.

I seem to recall back in the Dark Ages before we were shown the light that my roomate, who was black , and our suitemates were another white guy and a Japanese. None of us felt at all deprived of our college experience. Hell , best parties on our hill. I no doubt drank too much but I survived as did most of my liver. Laughing

I haven't been out very long but I believe that we didn't have a frat football player since the class of 04 graduated.  I was told that the class of 06 had a bunch of guys who wanted in a frat( not sure which one) but they weren't all allowed so they all backed out.
