andy moore commits to lafayette...

per texashoops.com, 6-1 point guard andy moore, who is currently prepping at northfield mount hermon, has committed to lafayette.

moore, originally from texas, had some ivy interest before deciding to prep last season and chose lafayette over continued ivy and patriot interest (sorry, no real specifics here) in addition to an offer to walk on at texas.

the texashoops.com write-up on his game:

ANDY is a steady and smart floor leader. He gets into the gaps in the defense, finds the open man and creates scoring opportunities. He has a nice stroke out to the 3 point line, handles it well against pressure, has nice speed and quickness and really understands the game.

edit: for those into rankings, moore was not ranked among the top 150 seniors in the state of texas (not as bad as it sounds; texas is a basketball hotbed) by either hoopscoop or rivals (texashoops.com) last year.

So, we've got 5 incoming froshmen next year? Help!? Confused
Andy

cstv.com lists:

Name Pos Ht Wt Status Home State School Rank
Moore, Andy G 6'1" 180 Verbal Texas Lafayette
Mower, Jim G 6'3" 180 Verbal Pennsylvania Lafayette
Petkovich, Nick G 6'5" N/A Signed Maryland Lafayette
Willen, Ryan F 6'8" 190 Signed Missouri Lafayette

and JD Pelham would be five.  Did they decide to use both of the extra scholarships (from the kids who transferred out) this year?  Or could one be a need-based-aid walk on?

Part of yesterday's  rivals.com article (thanks eric):

Despite a very successful career at St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Austin, Andy Moore still wasn't quite able to capture the attention of Division I coaches. So the all-around 6-foot-1, 180-pound point guard decided to take the prep school route to Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts in an effort to improve his game and his college recruitment. It was a goal accomplished on all fronts and numerous options opened up, but Moore found the right fit recently and he'll be staying on the East Coast.

"Andy committed to Lafayette last night after a visit there this past weekend," said Jeff Moore, Andy's father. "He really liked the coaching staff there from a coaching perspective and their professionalism. He liked all of the guys and really liked the school. Everything just seemed to fit as the academics are excellent, the league is strong, and he has a chance to compete for the point guard spot."

Moore was looking at a number of different options in the recruiting process before deciding on Lafayette. Numerous Ivy League and Patriot League schools showed interest, some mid-major schools were involved, and hometown University of Texas even offered to have him come on board as a preferred walk-on. But Lafayette had just about everything Moore was looking for and secured his commitment after his visit to campus./////

At Saturday's game, one of the people sitting near me was wearing a suit and looked like a high school player who might be a recruit.  I thought it probably was a H.S. junior, since I thought we were done recruiting for the year, but maybe it was Andy Moore.

I'm not surprised that we are bringing in 5 guys. Don't forget we are graduating five. With injuries, you need a full roster. Just because we have scholarships doesn't mean every player is on one. With only 12 scholarships there will always be a few players on need.

Does this mean that Pelham is not a done deal?

But there can only be one "recruited" player on need if there are twelve on hoops scholarships.

NMH Guard Makes Decision
February 27th, 2008
NewEnglandRecruitingReport.com
Northfield Mount Hermon’s post-graduate point guard makes his decision and continues to work towards his goal.

When Andy Moore decided to come to Northfield Mount Hermon as a post-graduate he did it in hopes of reaching his dream of playing division I basketball.  Now that dream appears set to become a reality, although he still has some work to do to earn a scholarship.

Moore will attend Lafayette College next year as a recruited walk-on.  At some division I schools walk-ons are little more than glorified managers who jump into practice drills and act as dummy defenders.  But that couldn’t be farther from the truth at Lafayette.  In fact, the Leopards basketball program currently carries only 8 scholarships as opposed to most division I schools around the country that have 13.  Consequently, Head Coach Fran O’Hanlan and his staff have the unenviable task of not only recruiting with fewer funded spots, but also finding talented players capable of helping the team as walk-ons.  In Moore, O’Hanlon has found exactly that.

The Texas native is an extremely fundamentally sound point guard, who makes good decisions with the basketball, and knows how to run a team.  He has also done a terrific job of building up his body in the weight room and is a good spot shooter.

“Andy is the total student athlete,” says NMH Head Coach John Carroll.  “He works hard on and off the court, is a terrific teammate, and a very good basketball player.  I fully expect him to be able to contribute at Lafayette next year.”

Moore’s decision certainly comes as a disappointment to a number of high academic small colleges and universities in the area who were actively pursuing the point guard.

Northfield Mount Hermon faces Winchendon today in the quarter-finals of the NEPSAC tournament.  The game will take place at 4pm at Merrimack College.

The story is inaccurate because he gets 3 per yer for a total of 12. but it ansewers the question about scholarships for next year...he will have four to give next year!!

Assuming Pelham is coming, with the addition of Moore, it would appear we're bringing in a guy at each position.  Does this mean we're done and we can expect the official announcement of this year's recruiting class in the foreseeable future?  Or do y'all think that there might be another "surprise" out there?

Would think we are tapped.   Heres to hoping Willen or Pelham show something fast.   Have seen some nice press on former - nothing substantial on the later.

I thought LC will have nine scholarship players next year: Koltun, Benbow, Mintz, Visockas, Wheeler, Mower, Pelham, Petkovich, and Willen.   If they have four to give next year, which of these nine is not a scholarship player?

Other issue is whether Moore is receiving need-based aid.   If he is, then he is probably a "counter" as far as the NCAA limitation of 13 scholarship players.    Gruner probably doesn't count - even if he was recruited - as long as he keeps his GPA above 3.3.

We know 2 things for certain. We lost two scholarship players (Andersen and Hines) school allows Fran 3 per year and I am told a max of four to replace lost scholarship players. We don't know who is scholarship and who is not and  who is "recruited and who is not" .  For we all we know, one of the incoming freshmen having not recieved interest, got his HS coach to shop the kid, so he'll be a walk on . Quite frankly I don't really care. The recruit thing, that people get all worked up about on these boards, bores me! Unless the kid is a MacDonald's All American all star, superhero, nationally ranked whatever, we can't be certain how good they are!! So I'll wait  til next year to see.

You lost two last year (Hines and Andersen), but I was told that Visockas actually replaced Hines.   He was given his offer (which apparently was the 4th LC scholarship for that class)  a few weeks after the word broke that Hines was not returning.    So it is my understanding that Fran had four available for this year.    Based on the various articles, it appears that the four I named all received scholarship money, although that is not 100% certain.

I completely agree that it is impossible to tell how they kids will work out.   In some cases, we won't really know until their junior years.

Agreed on the recruiting scene. For instance, the Thomas kid (now a senior) at NC was the No. 1 recruit in the country. He is struggling for playing time again this year. Does it give us a shot at more quality players, yes, will the program improve, yes. Is it going to be dramatic, no. It's still wait and see when they adjust to college life, D1 hoops, and Fran's system.

though i agree completely with your point, quentin thomas was not even a consensus top 100 recruit, let alone the top recruit in the country, in 2004. some guy named dwight howard holds that distinction.
