Army/Navy

Congrats to the Black Knights.  First win over Navy in 15 years.

Watching Army's triple option - it really is a thing of beauty.  It's one thing for Ahmad Bradshaw & Co. to do it to the Pards.  It's quite another to see it executed against a strong team like Navy.

Army still has a bowl game left to play (vs North Texas) on December 27.  Assuming John Loose is a candidate for Lafayette's HC position, would any announcement be delayed until after that game?

You saw a Loose defense today. Bad ass. I still talk to him. He knows the environment at LC. LC offers him a chance to be a head coach. On the other side he is a pretty conservative guy in a very conservative environment at Army. Not sure the Politically Correct environment at LC fits him. Remember, he went to the administration before he left and asked them to change the culture and they declined. Same people still in charge.

We can change coaches but our leadership is still the same. Like shuffling the chairs on the deck of the titanic. Painful comment but we are where we are.

On another front, Rocco at Richmond rumored to be leaving, and is at least taking callers. Delaware waiting to talk with him. He was making over eight hundred K Two years ago and Delaware says they can top that.  He loses a lot of asst coaches over money. His coords only make low to mid ones. IPad acting up.

I was unaware of this. Details?

I was ecstatic to watch Army win ... but tell me, how does an assistant football coach go to the administration of a college/university and ask for a culture change?
It's quite possible that some administrators wouldn't even know who he is, among other things. Could Lane Kiffin go to the board of Alabama and ask for change? How would Saban take that? For that matter, would Carmen Cozza have stood for that?
I don't have the insights and access many of you do, but I visit the campus often and I have attended Lafayette events since the 1960s.
There has been goofiness and silliness for as long as I can remember. "Safe spaces" etc etc under different names. These are college students, remember. I may have had a few dumb ideas myself back when I was 21 and knew everything.
Most of the students pay no mind. They study, drink, whatever and leave after four years.

Yep. Year before he left he wanted changes in the program, commitment from the administration, discipline. Biggest thing was he wanted accountability in the program. Admin told him they were content and on course. He and FT disagreed a lot.

I am biting my lip and will say more in a few months. Is it acceptable for a coach to pull up in the parking lot for practice when the kids are already on the field?

No hard feelings but this isn't Alabama. Not being sarcastic but you can't  compare our coaching and admin to Saban and Kiffin at Alabama. I read your posts and from what can tell you're a smart guy with an impressive career. One day you will be surprised to learn where our program is today. Leopard10 speaks the truth on several issues.

I agree that our programs are a disaster. I've been harping on that for a few years. A disgrace. Almost all of them and as noted I appreciate your insights into the game and the school.
If an assistant can do an end-around and go to the administrators, well it's a darn good thing we've had change. I wouldn't have tolerated that.
I don't know Loose or Cramsey personally. They may be great choices.
I just hope for an outsider.
I need a drink! It's Beaujolais season!
Happy holidays, all!
(BTW I was in Bryant Park last Saturday around 11 pm and remembered your recommendation of the hotel bar but the young couple we were meeting -- Lehigh people actually -- really wanted to go to the park Grill as the Southwest Porch was for some reason already closed).

*There is nothing like Bloomsbury Punch and the 1951/Alistair Sims version of a Christmas Carol to kick off the season.

I understand your point. I have no idea who we get though I would be shocked if we hired from within current staff. Have a good holiday as well.

It was great to watch Army win that game. The defense was fast and mean. The offense was on a mission. What a fun game, you could see the emotion, the level of competition, that little something else on the field.

As far as Loose going to the administration, it was partly about culture and partly about right/wrong. You say you don't know how an assistant could go to the administration, but just like any job when you take something important to your boss and he ignores it you have two options:

1. Either sit on it because he is the boss or
2. Take it to his boss.

Loose went to Frank with a list of things that were important to the program and Frank gave him the whole tough guy act. Loose blew up and was convinced he was fired. After that he went to Bruce to discuss the state of the program. In the end Loose was "forgiven" and allowed to coach one more season before bolting to Army as soon as humanly possible. I mean, think about it, why make that backwards career move? Loose left a DC position to take the exact same position coach position he held 14 years prior. He could not wait to get away from Frank. And for what it is worth Loose has told me that he has learned more from Monken and Bateman in the last few years then he had ever learned or seen in Frank.

I would imagine a return to College Hill is that last thing John Loose would seek if he maintains such a jaded view of Lafayette's culture.

Would John Loose be considered an "inside hire" of sorts?  If Coach Loose is hired after all is said and done and the consultants have had their say, would fans/alums/parents react as if the "fix was in?"  Or is he distant enough from Lafayette to make logical sense.

And, of course, does Loose even want the job?  Might he simply prefer to keep Lafayette at arm's length?

I think Loose likes the school, but no longer wanted to work with Frank.  He probably had a degree of frustration with Bruce as well for not doing anything.  There may be a little bad blood between Loose and Bruce, or maybe Bruce agreed completely with John but didn't do anything because he's Bruce.

Very interesting. Do you think Bruce will admit he ignored Loose's pleadings?  Im betting he'd rather keep that info from that committee and the higher ups. If it went down as 10 said, I'm thinking Loose doesn't get any consideration for the job. Terrible thought but that's politics.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Bruce sees it that way. From what I heard it was more of a discussion about how far Bruce thought he could step into a coach's world. He didn't feel he had the need or the ability to dictate the way a coach ran the program. Loose is incredibly well respected on the Hill and is applauded for creating the largest football camp in the country that just happens to continue to bring Lafayette good press every year even though he no longer is employed there (Yet another reason why Frank can't stand Loose. He always wanted his name on that camp "Because he was the head coach, that's why!"

Whether or not the administration see Loose as too close to the program or a real candidate for head coach I do not know.
Spardicus80

The Loose situation is very complex.  On the one hand, it is an opportunity to obtain a HC job at a place that he is well acquainted with - warts and all.  On the other hand, a desire/demand to see the culture change from a recalcitrant administration could keep him where he is at West Point, particularly if FT is hanging around in some nebulous advisory capacity looking over his successor's shoulder.

Lafayette is at a point where Army was three years ago.  Army formed a commission to study the football program in particular and to determine why Army wasn't competitive with both Navy and the AFA.  Recommendations were made, and changes were implemented.  Today there is no question that football players are treated differently than the average member of the Corps.  For example Beast Barracks was changed to a different time for incoming members of the football team, and it was shortened so that football players would be able to keep to a desired weight.  Plus the prep school was moved to West Point.

The hiring of Loose, or any other coach, will come within the context of the recommendations of the consultant and the committee.  Will the new coach be expected to embrace these recommendations, or will he be able to implement his own changes for the betterment of the program?  That is what will determine who gets hired, and who will accept the position.

That is why an outsider is needed here. Is Loose the outsider we need? Maybe yes because he knows what is wrong and what he needs to succeed and will negotiate for it. That may be a threat to the status quo along with the consultant. The question may be how badly does Byerly want to succeed at this?
She is going to hear many of the same things from Loose and the consultant. My observation is the consultant is digging to the heart of the matter as we type, even beyond a carefully constructed committee structure. Loose has experience here and knows what has to change.
A Loose hire could signal a change in the whole Athletic Dept. eventually. An internal hire would signal all things remain the same. Or as the Marquis might of said "Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose."

Loose is an outsider in the sense that he has worked with some high quality football coaches away from Lafayette, and knows how a quality head coach operates. He knows Lafayette, but has not allowed Lafayette to skew his viewpoint of what is acceptable.  Monken is an ultra competive crazy person.  Loose was also mentored in the old days by Bob Sutton of Army, who is a great coach.  Sutton has been one of the best coordinators in the NFL over the last 10 years, and firing him is one of the dumbest decisions ever made by Army.  Again not sure if John is the best candidate, but he is among a group of several guys that I believe would be very solid choices for the position.

FT, this is EXACTLY why I dont know the reason Loose is in the mix. I have heard he is an excellent recruiter.
