Army West Point

http://www.armytimes.com/story/mi...ets-black-knights-corps/25748989/

The athletic teams of the United States Military Academy will now officially be known as Army West Point.  Sounds rather strange to me, but I am no branding expert.  You may have noticed that Army's uniforms and athletic apparel have been moving toward using "West Point" the last few years, since apparently some people don't realize that Army, West Point and USMA are the same place.

There was speculation that they would also cease using the "Black Knights" as an official nickname, but that has not occurred.  They state that official names are Black Knights, Cadets and The Corps.  They will also use that greek helmet thingy for the logo - I personally used to like the Army mule logo, but that has been gone for a while.

I found this interesting.  Instead of weeding out their various names, they will be called everything it appears!

I personally can't wait until the Leopards square off against the Army West Point football team in a few years.

I think everyone will just keep using "Army."  I can't fathom TV announcers saying, "Army West Point with the ball on the forty" or "Army West Point with the steal" over and over.

It will never work. Rutgers tried to be UNJ and that failed. Lehigh still is split among its three official names and many other terms.
What will Kings Point call itself?

Maybe they didn't want to be confused with the US Army School of the Americas Smile

First, the Brown-and-White-Mountain-Packing-Engineer-Hawks.  Now, the Black-Cadet-Knight-Corps.  I'm so confused.

Worst name change ever still has to be Hofstra, going from the excellent, differentiating "Flying Dutchmen" to the completely lame "Pride."

BTW I went to the NCAA.com statistics site to get some figures for a lacrosse post.  All the references to "Army" have been changed to "Army West Point."  It looks awkward, especially in the PL context where Navy is still just "Navy."

EDIT - also the Patriot League website now uses "Army West Point."  Again, it looks just a little odd juxtaposed against "Navy" in the the team standings.  I think it adds confusion rather than removing it.  One is left wondering, how is "Army West Point" different from "Army?"  Just my 2˘.

It makes it sound like there is more than one Army . . . as if we're differentiating between UNC-Asheville, UNC-Wilmington or UNC-Greensboro.

Worse still, it makes it sound like they are a branch campus . . . UNC-Asheville standing in the shadow of Chapel Hill.

Unless, of course, this is all part of a double-secret plan to open a second United States Military Academy somewhere out west or in Texas . . .  Rolling Eyes

EDIT - If the eastern campus is known as "West Point," would the western campus be known as "East Point?"

"East Point" would be cagily counterintuitive.

The Texans are probably pushing for one so it is already in place when they secede and regain their rightful status as a proud, independent republic.

This morning's Baltimore Sun had a list of all college lacrosse game on TV this weekend.  The one involving the United States Military Academy listed the school as "Army West Point."

The more you see Army West Point the sillier it looks (and sounds).  Could be time to surrender on that one.

I can't find the link, but USMA grads are already making fun of the name.  Someone is selling a shirt that says go "Army West Point @ the United States Military Academy in West Point" or something of that nature.

I was watching CBS struggle with it during the PL MLax quarterfinals last night.  IMHO the "Army West Point" change is a solution to a problem that didn't exist.  It just seems awkward.

"To separate the Point from Army Point Academy is to take away from the Point of the Military Academy. What exactly is the Point of all of this anyway?" said Lt. Gen. Robert Louis Caslen, Jr., APA superintendent. "For the record, I’m still advocating that we rename the entire institution ‘The LTG Robert Louis Caslen Jr. Military Center for Cadets Who Can’t Lead Good."

This could end up something like "New Coke."
