Don't know much about Coach Link but CNU football has been pretty good in DIII for the last few years. The previous coach retired after a 16 year career at CNU where he started the program. They play in a tough division with Wesley and Hampton-Sydney but it is better then their old conference, the USA south.

It will be tough for Coach Link to make the playoffs, but he will have plenty of stability. I am sure he has thought this all through, but he will definitely have a tough time ever moving back to the world of scholarship football. He will need to continue to put good CNU teams on the field and hope some of his friends from UNH and Laf do well and move up.

As you mention lots of positives and negatives here, and really depends on the aspirations of the individual coach.

Newport is in a tough league, but they have a chance to be a good program. First of all they are a public school with low tuition and reside in a an area with a large and growing population, so Art should have access to lots of players.  They are also still a new program and school with not much tradition, so a chance to make his own way.  Also the former coach is now an Asst. AD and presumably had a large say in his hire, so he should have plenty of support.

He can stay here for 20 year and raise his family there and have a solid career.  Agree that if he has D-I aspirations this doesn't help as few guys leverage D-III gigs into D-I.  It happens, but not all that often, Like you I never met or spoke with Coach Link and have no idea what makes him tick, but seems like a solid opportunity for him and his family.

He has been talking with them for a while now. I knew about this but he told us in confidence so couldn't bring it up. Cool campus at D3 level. Nice climate as well. I know he wanted out of the snow belt.
