at Maryland

Ouch.  84-36.  Didn't see this, but were we completely outclassed?

NB - according to goleopards.com, "the Terrapins remain unbeaten at 12-0. Maryland is the Leopards' highest-ranked opponent since Dec. 7, 1990, when Lafayette challenged No. 1 Virginia."

The top tier women's teams make mince meat of teams on our level. That UVA game in 1990 I believe we lost by 64. I don't quite see what we get from the experience except the ability to say we got our asses handed to us by a big-time team. There's no chance whatsoever for an upset in these games...Although just to show there's an exception to every rule Harvard beat Stanford in 1998 - but that was a damn good Harvard team (still a major upset though).

I didn't see the game, but I saw it coming.

Maroon, I think we still ought to compete against the best of the best.  The team got handled pretty well, I suppose, but it only can make them stronger.  No shame whatsoever here, other than the administration realizing what is necessary to continue at the level at which Lafayette belongs.

Hats off to the women's basketball team today for showing up and playing their tails off.  And kudos to Coach Nolan for shooting for the stars.  Your fans are here!

I remember that 0-8 loss the FH team took from UNC. It did make them stronger in the end. Hope it works here  too!!

I see your point and I know many agree with your point of view but I feel there is a difference between playing up and playing completely out of your league. I don't see how a game like this does anything for either team. In fact, as a Terp fan, I question their scheduling more than ours. They are winning by an average of 32 ppg. Not sure how this gets them ready for the ACC. The only game they have played that was remotely on their level was Michigan.  Meanwhile the horrible ogres in Durham are at least mixing up their cupcakes with the likes of Notre Dame, Auburn, Kentucky and Purdue.

Again - I just don't see how we are better for it - we were down 51-13 at the half.

BTW - I don't want this to be construed as me doubting the effort or ability of our girls - or coach Nolan's judgement.

The foundation is being built - We have a young team that seems to be on the right track to challenge for the league title in 2 years.
The offense needs to come together and we definitely need to take better care of the ball - but we lost our 3 leading scorers from last season (by far Tammy's best recruiting class).
We start 2 frosh and 2 sophs - and we have two of the hardest positions to find (pg and center) filled for the next couple of seasons.  Freeland, in particular,  is in an incredibly difficult position but it will pay huge dividends in the not-to-distant future. With Fiacco in the paint and Freeland's pressure we're going to be a tough team to rack up points against in the PL.
Looking at the 09-10 team there were four girls on that team who I doubt would make this roster and a couple more who have seen their playing time diminish since coach Nolan took over.
Everything points to a program that's getting on track.
We disagree on the scheduling of one game - but we're on the same page as far as the direction of the program.

Absolutely this is a team on the way up. Nolan is a great coach and a better recruiter. I am looking forward to the PL schedule!!!

I'm with Maroon on this one.  There are a lot of stops on the continuum between the Patriot League and the undefeated number 5 team in the country.  We should be scheduling our stretch OOC games in that middle ground.  It is hard to see how being on the short end of a hopeless blowout benefits the 2011-2012 Pards in any way.

Couldn't agree more.  Is there a paycheck involved in these bball mismatches?

Totally agree with Carney and Maroon.  It does nothing for the program to get slaughtered by a team like the Terps.  It is as ridiculous as Holy Cross being crushed by UConn women every year.  We'd be better off playing other mid major programs and more Ivies.

I doubt the Maryland Team is in any way "representative of the student body."  The players are in school to play hoops, period.

I think some of you have become too accustomed to mediocrity with the women’s program.  Coach Nolan clearly has plans for this team and it probably goes beyond the PL.  If that plan executes, they’d probably go into the NCAA’s as a 15 or 16 seed and get to face teams of Maryland’s caliber in the first round. It is much better to look at them in awe in December as opposed to March.

We've become too accustomed to mediocrity in everything at LC.  Frankly, we're looking for someone - anyone - to lead us out of this wilderness.

Completely overlooked by me in this discussion are two important factors. 1) It was a tournament so they got two games in one trip (not to mention they won one) and 2) Freeland and Macklin are from Maryland and - in Macklin's case in particular - are close to College Park. Many coaches work hard to get games that allow players to have a large contingent of fans.

The whole thing makes a lot more sense than a 4 hour trip to get blasted... In fact Nolan's looking pretty smart right now.

I'm going to clean the egg off of my face.
Bogus Megapardus

I did not see the East Carolina victory coming - perhaps I should have.  Agreeing with Maroon that McCutcheon and Nolan look smart in retrospect here.  The East Carolina win makes us look much better and helps erase the bad loss to Maryland.  I'm please that the players were able to play near their families.
