at Sacred Heart

Tuesday March 17 at 4:30 PM.  St. Paddy's Day special - Leopards looking very green and likely will leave fans feeling that way once this game is in the books.

SHU is 2-2 on the season so far with wins over Dartmouth and UVM.  The Pioneers scored 21 points over the latter, which is probably more than the Pards will score all season.  The team's objectives for this game reportedly range from "catastrophic loss" to "abject capitulation," with the final outcome likely to be somewhere between the two.

In related news, the NCAA has acknowledged and is considering Lafayette's request to be allowed "Three Mississippis" on all faceoffs before the opposing FOGO is permitted to move his stick.  According to remarks by Head Coach Jim Rogalski, the move potentially could bring the Pards' FO win ratio "up closer to .500" by late next season.

A separate petition allow Lafayette an extra "short center field" middie and to add "Hector the Rejector" in goal was denied by the Competition Committee.

Lafayette's scheduled loss to Sacred Heart this afternoon will be streamed live by NEC Front Row:

No word yet if the Pards have been cleared for use of the "Three Mississippi" rule.
Bogus Megapardus

. . . and the Pards lose the opening FO.

Also the game clock is not working, which could benefit Lafayette's time of possession.
Bogus Megapardus

Down 3-1 in the first, and the defense is brutally ugly.  You can see it coming and all you can do is wince.  SMH.
Bogus Megapardus

Morgan Westby finds the corner on a wrap-around but it takes about six seconds for SHU to get it back after another Pard FO loss.  If I'm not mistaken, Lafayette has yet to win a FO in this game.

4-2 Sacred Heart at the end of the 1st.
Bogus Megapardus

A FO loss to open the second, followed by the predictable quick SHU score.  The rout is on.
Bogus Megapardus

Pards fail to ruin the EMO on a 1:00 slash.

5-4 SHU.
seenalot

Not attractive and could get worse.  Wonder if we have won two face offs in a row since Wagner....   Hard to mount a come back without the ball.  Back to 5-4.
seenalot

Based on what I am seeing our ride package, if you can call it that, is really lame.

In face SHU likes it so much they played the last face off all the way back to the goalie and took their chances from there.
Bogus Megapardus

Offensively, the movement away from the ball is poor.  Close attack does not slide aggressively to find space and they let the defenders plant tight.

Defense is playing aggressively, I'll give them that.  Lots of long poles flailing with near-reckless abandon.

Anyone ever seen the Peter Sellers movie, "Being There?"
Bogus Megapardus

At 7-4 near the end of the half, you can just about feel the apathy setting in.
Bogus Megapardus

Now 8-4 SHU . . . and looking forward to another FO loss.

EDIT . . . yep, as predicted.
Bogus Megapardus

Sonny Round finds one with seconds left in the half.  Will SHU get it back before time is called?
seenalot

Looks like he is rotating 4 FO guys - none of whom has had success other than one procedure call....   Haven't gone to the LSM hack/slash yet, but can feel that coming.

Might as well see if Ross S can take face offs.....he's back from the combine right?

FOGO should be low and squat with a fast twitch, excellent balance and good spatial awareness.  Has to have powerful quads, thighs and hips.  A FOGO needn't be 40-time fast or have superior stick skills (other than the clamp).  Wrestlers often make good FOGOs.

The Scheuermanator would be awesome - but then again he could probably play any lax position given some practice.  He's that kind of an athlete.
Bogus Megapardus

Pard EMO scores.  If only they could find that kind of space without the extra man.

EDIT - and the SHU EMO gets it right back in a split second.
Bogus Megapardus

Pards actually won a FO and converted.  10-8 SHU.
Bogus Megapardus

One on one, that Pard middie can't hang.  11-8 SHU.

And another FO loss.
Bogus Megapardus

Round from 15 yards out.  Not too shabby.
Bogus Megapardus

SHU not getting called for the high sticks.
Bogus Megapardus

And with time a-wastin', another unforced Pard TO probably seals it.
Bogus Megapardus

So with that loss to one of the lowest-ranked teams, Lafayette will now find itself as one of the worst teams, if not the very worst team, in all of Division I mens lacrosse.

Congrats to all - a new low.
Bogus Megapardus

There remains now just one winnable game on the 2015 schedule - against NJIT on April 7.  A loss to a first-year, never-before-played-lacrosse NJIT squad would mean . . . well, I dunno.

Again, Coach Jim Rogalski - is this what you had in mind?

Model face off guy for future is Trevor Baptiste at Denver.  Grabbed right out of our side yard in NJ - they are there - gotta find.  Step one towards turn around.  Can't find that and we ain't going anywhere we haven't been in last few years.

If the Pards went anywhere near .500 in faceoffs this afternoon - can you imagine the difference that would have made?

Baptise went to Morristown-Beard, a private school.  A short, easy glide down Rt. 57 from horse country.  Traditional lax opponent of Newark Academy (the designated prep school of the Simons and the Kirbys).

my observations...i watched it on tv so i couldn't see it live..here are the pros
i thought the offense looked really good moving the ball...it seemed the middies really did a nice job causing slides....did SKI change the offense? EMO was on fire today..i think we took 37 shots
the cons FOGO the worst in D1 D2 D3 JUCO VARSITY AND JV...#24 should not be playing...he got beat at least 4x maybe more it was hard to see on the computer...GB's i would have our defense just practice that for 2 hours everyday ...anyway i will be there sat vs loyola...hope its a warm day
pards4ever

sorry we took 47 shots a school record  Smile
PardsLax

I didn't catch any of the game but seeing we only won 5-27 faceoffs is simply mind-numbing.  Can it possibly be that simple if we had a faceoff unit (acknowledging that the FOGO is only part of the equation) that could win 50% of the time that we could approach some semblance of respectability?  It certainly would help but it seems that there are other systemic issues in the program that are at play.  Who could have imagined a couple of years ago that beating Holy Cross would be a huge upset?

A few bright spots to note:  Jason Sands has put together a nice first half of the season.  He already has as many assists (12) as the leader in assists for the whole of last season.  Erik Cannon has been playing at a very high level.  Eric Joseph has turned out to be a good goal scorer so far.  Finally, man-down defense has been lights out.  That's about it, sadly.

And Baptiste was available for any D1 program.   He was committed to F&M until April of his senior year when Denver saw how he was playing and offered some scholarship money.   Bucknell has had the same type of FO problem.   Last year they were next-to-last in the country.   This year has seen big improvement, as they have moved all the way up to 52nd.  Tough to win when you are constantly losing at the X.
