Baseball eliminated, I think

Baseball dropped two games at Lehigh today, 7-2 in the opener and 4-2 in the second game. I believe we had to win 3 of the 4 to have a chance. Once again little hitting and some sloppy play in the infield. Twice LU stole third while our third baseman was walking the ball to the pitcher. We got the first one out when he came off the bag. We also butchered a rundown between second and third. Lehigh now qualified for the playoffs.

A very disappointing result from the home of the Brown.  For a change ptiching was more of a problem as Connor and Bednar got out pitched in both games.  Once again, the team did not hit.  Joe may have to revise the strategy and use the scholies for hitters and hope that Bednar and Trevor Houck are the answers.  Mitch Leeds needs to get it going tomorrow and get a win.  He should not have nothing but defeats on his record.

My biggest question about this year's group is why they can't get up for big games.  Why they can't get motivated for the Brown and for Central PA Bison is beyond me.  LU  did indeed qualify for the playoffs AND they have an overall winning record which is a lot more than you can say for ANY Leopard team.

Wake up Ms Diorio - it's time to hold the coaches accountable.  I don't care who they are.

WINNING MATTERS
Lafalum

Aside from the football win at Lehigh this was a miserable year. I some cases it was lack of effort, in some cases lack of talent, and perhaps even coaching errors . In any case, I am hoping next year sees some corrections, but another year like this one will make the hole bigger and more expensive to correct. I think the first thing to do is to realize there is a problem, and the top person has to articulate that. (Whoever that is…I'm not sure I know whose in charge…Bruce, Annette, Allyson, Ed Ahart??)

Two or three years like this and the beat from the fossils on the BOT and faculty will return for Division 3.
ed65

discouraging assessment by Lafalum but quite accurate.

I hope the new regime (e.g. Diorio) wil start to hold coaches responsible for performance on the field, and the key metric in their performance is winning.

Has there been an official announcement that Diorio is the top of the athletic food chain?

Yes.
Andy

So, baseball loses 3 of 4 to LU, failing to finish above .500 in league play for the 7th year in a row (.500 once, most years well below the mark).

LC last in fielding %, last in BA, and second to last in ERA.

What is Bruce's plan for this once proud program?
ed65

The Friends of Baseball actively supports the program, and will continue to do so.  The Friends Group is well-organized, and has as its main goal to raise money for scholarships.  Joe Maddons' ticket raffle is a very good thing, and Coach Kinney has been great about reaching out to baseball alums.  To Andy's point, I cannot tell you what the AD has done.  As far as I can tell, there is no plan for improving baseball other than raising money from alums.

"To Andy's point, I cannot tell you what the AD has done".

That pretty well sums it up, and not just for baseball.

How long has LC been giving out baseball scholarships?

I believe this year was the first time.  Why do you want to know?

Just curious.  I didn't know any PL school was giving them.

Over time, this should give LC an advantage if the others in the league don't also add some.   Lehigh may, but I doubt Bucknell or Holy Cross will.
Andy

Would think a commitment to winning in the form of allowing a coach to find and sign high need kids would work, too.

Army & Navy are 100% Athletic Scholies.

Actually no athletic scholarships - but 100% free rides just like all non-athletes.   Of course that "free" ride comes with the slight catch of a very different college lifestyle plus having to agree to at least five years of possibly dangerous service after graduation.
Lafalum

I'll give them the free ride given the life they have chosen. Glad we have young people who are ready to make a commitment like that.
Pard Newbie

I agree completely.  They deserve the scholarship and then some.  Generally speaking, a finer group of young men and ladies would be hard to find.
Bogus Megapardus

The goals and methods at the Academies are completely different than any other institution.  As it turns out, the results fit squarely within the competitive academic and athletic balance of the Patriot League.  There's a reason for that.
