Baseball recruit-Zach Fritz

Minersville 4, Johnsonburg 1The Associated Press
ALTOONA, Pa. - Zach Fritz pitched a three-hitter and Minersville scored four unearned runs to beat Johnsonburg 4-1 and win the PIAA Class A state baseball championship Friday at Blair County Ballpark.

Matt Rose's three-run double , which came after two errors and a walk , put Minersville, the District 11 champion, up in the first inning. The Battlin' Miners added another unearned run in the sixth.

Fritz, a senior right-hander who will attend Lafayette, gave up just three hits while striking out nine and walking three in the seven-inning, complete-game win. He finished the season a perfect 12-0.

Johnsonburg, the District 9 champ, got its only run in the second inning on a long home run over the right field fence by Seth Streich.

Losing pitcher Calvin Grumley, who plans to go to Penn State, gave up three hits and struck out 10 in five innings. Grumley, who lost for the first time in 15 decisions, was victimized by four Rams errors.

Metuchen's Rems hopes to do double duty on Lafayette College diamond

Jack Rems is a gifted hurler, hitter and fielder a five-tool high school baseball player who is capable of pitching and playing the outfield in college.

While performing such double duty is relatively unheard of at the Division I level, Rems' baseball coach at Metuchen High School, Sean Economou, is encouraging his star player to do just that......

Rems, a senior who recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Lafayette College, is capable of following in his coach's footsteps.

One of the best players in the Greater Middlesex Conference, Rems batted .427 with 38 RBI and seven homers last season. As a pitcher, he posted a 7-3 record with 99 strikeouts and a 1.86 ERA.////////

Andy's post regarding Jack Rems piqued my curiosity about the class of 2012 baseball recruits.  I thought it might be nice to start a preliminary list of student-athletes who have signed to play for the College Hill 9 next season.  Please feel free to add to (or edit) the list if you have any further information.  In addition, please take the heights and weights with a grain of salt.  Without further ado...

Nice job, T. Glad to add another baseball fan to the board.

Saw this on Ben:

Third baseman Ben Smith signed his commitment letter to continue his playing career at Lafayette College.  On the year, Smith hit for a .276 average with 16 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, and 15 rbi's while playing great defense on the hot corner.

Also: Garden City, LI leadoff man ss/cf  Bobby Fargnoli has signed with us.

Thought I'd seen a FLA kid, too, eluding me right now.

Thanks for the update Andy.  Tried to track down the mystery man from FL, but with no luck...

Added Ethan Perro to the list -- check out Pitcher(s) of the Year:

Sounds like another good young arm, T!!

After hitting an anemic .240 in league play, hopefully Joe has some special hitters coming aboard, too.

I sure hope so Andy.  On the bright side, we're returning our top 5 hitters (although Pissari only had something like 30 ABs) and I'm hopeful that this past season was just an anomaly for Butler.

I work with a gentleman from Garden City who had an awful lot of nice things to say about Fargnoli.  He sounds like a Froio-clone.  Perhaps Joe is considering employing more speed at the top of the order to apply pressure to opponents on the basepaths.

Hoping for big things from McMahon and Miller this year.

If nothing else, our defense is very solid.  Get a legitimate 4th weekend starter behind Atkins, Fritz and Shea and another surprise performer in the bullpen (like Woodfield in 2007 and Mostek in 2008) and we might have just enough offense to contend for the league title.

Official announcement of the class of 2012 has been released

Nice job compiling the preview list, T, the only addition being the C.

On first glance it looks like there are some arms to get excited about in this P heavy class, as Coach looks to replace three sr relievers. (Woodfield taking a redshirt?).  We should have a hell of a young staff!

Fargnoli has a bigger frame than I expected and you have to like Naso's #s. Good job by the staff.
