Baseball

A double header sweep of Army West Point (what's up with adding West Point?).

Bednar pitched a shut out in Game 1 and Leeds pitched six strong innings in Game 2.  Always good to seen wins at Army, and despite a close call in the Army 8th, Ryan Callanan shut them down.

Unfortunately, I didn't go to the games due to a family commitment so there was no chance to complain about the umpiring - sorry Bison!  I followed the reports on Twitter which generally is close to real time.

The weather looks terrible tomorrow and Monday so who knows when the next two will be played.

The team now has 8 wins and is 2-0 in the PL.  Navy next weekend in Easton.

Much to my surprise, they are trying to play the double header today at West Point.  The temperature per the Weather Channel is 36 degrees and feels like 26.  Wind gusts are 35-45 mph.  Not exactly baseball weather.  Presumably pitchers will be able to blow on their hands and fielders will wear gloves or hand warmers or something underneath the baseball mitts and on their bare hands.

Bucknell and Lehigh also playing today in Lewisburg.   Temperature of 35 - wind chill of 24 - at gametime.   Probably felt even colder for LU after they fell behind 9-0 after three innings.

Nice win in Game #1 11-2.  Lost Game 2 as the bullpen didn't get the job done.

So an excellent 3 of 4 from Army which should give the team some confidence.  They are doing some serious hitting this season.  Two weekday games upcoming against Penn and Penn State. I'm curious to see who Joe will start on the mound.

First time that LC has won the weekend at Army since 2006.

Sunny and a high of 45 in Easton on Tuesday.  It will feel like summer compared to today.

Nice to see our Baseball team winning some games, we certainly have the history.

Great stuff! This program has struggled lately but coach Kinney has shown be can get it done in the past.

Well, with Navy coming to town this weekend I doubt you will see Bednar pitching in the Liberty Bell game on Tuesday. Maybe an inning against Penn State. This weekend' s 4 game set may determine who wins the regular season. Joe's been using the younger pitchers during the weekday games.

Generally speaking, throughout his LC coaching career Joe has not started weekend rotation pitchers during the week.

I don't think any team does.

Wednesday vs. Penn State is probably a scheduled side day for the two Saturday starters. So they may each work an inning instead of just throwing 20-30 pitches in the pen. Though maybe one or both will work Tuesday instead... every pitcher and every coach is a little different.

Unless you're in a major conference that gets at-large consideration, midweek baseball games are for the hitters. The pitchers are usually young guys or the guys that didn't make the cut for the weekend mix, or it's a staff day with everybody working an inning regardless of how well or poorly they're pitching.

Not saying it's not valuable work for those pitchers going forward, but I still think those games are just about the hitters not going five days without facing live pitching or fielding a batted ball.
