Boston U loses three players - including Maurice Watson Jr,

With three players just announcing they are leaving, Boston U goes from being one of the PL favorites to a possible middle-of-the-pack team. In total, they are reportedly losing three transfers:

- SG Malik Thomas JR. (6-7, 190) - played about 20 mpg. Was 5th in scoring and 3rd in rebounding.

- PG Maurice Watson, SO. (5-10, 165) - one of the league's top few players as a soph. Led team in scoring and assists. Led PL in assists.

- PF James Kennedy JR.(6-6, 225) - reserve forward who missed year due to injury.

In addition, they lose three key seniors, including two of their top three players: guard DJ Irving, the preseason POY who was their #2 scorer, and PF Dom Morris, their leading rebounder (by a wide margin) and second leading scorer. Also they lose one of their three main subs, Travis Robinson, who provided 3-point shooting.

This leaves them with only three of their core eight players. However they do add Blaise Mbargorba, a 6-11 transfer from SMU who should be a good player.  They also add transfer Eric Fanning from Wagner.

LC should be one of the favorites next year.

Thanks to Bison Road Warrior for this quote from Watson's father and this link:

“He has a dream and his dream was always to have an opportunity, one, to play in the NCAA Tournament, two, play in a packed arena and three, make it to the NBA,” Watson, Sr. said. “At this point, we feel that our best opportunity to reach those goals are on a bigger stage than BU. As great of a program as it is, we believe that it’s in a developing stage and that Maurice can’t take the chance of sticking around until they get to that point.”

Um, first off, you are 5'-10" (maybe)

Secondly, you have to sit for a year.

Best of luck, though!

In 2011 the Philadelphia Inquirer said Watson had 18 offers and that he chose Boston over UVA, La Salle, Niagara and Hofstra.
Maybe he's going to stay home in Philadelphia.
Boston recruits heavily in the Philadelphia area.
Joe Jones said in the Herald that Watson wants to play at a higher level.

We were one of the favorites this year.  How did that turn out?

If Hinrichs had been healthy all year, I think it would have turned out a lot better.   The preseason voters can't really predict injuries.

Also I think some underestimated the huge effect of Tony Johnson on the rest of the team.   However with Lindner now having a full season under his belt as a starter, I think things should be significantly improved.

Glad to see that Met is losing those players, especitally Watson.  He doesn't belong in the PL and is not a legit student.

Maybe Bison's prediction that BU will come back to the rest of the league is coming true.

He wouldn't have fit under the AI, but he didn't miss by much, so I think that's a bit harsh.   He had an above-average SAT and above-average grades.   Do you know something I don't about his academic record?

Watson had offers from Rice, Cornell, Penn and Princeton, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

His father was his high school coach.

Good for Maurice Watson.  You don't get many chances to chase your dream.  The NBA doesn't have a Help Wanted sign for 5'10" guards, but at least he won't go through life saying "What if..."  Personally, I'm sorry to see him go.  We don't get so many superior talents in the Patriot League that we can or should be happy to see them leave just so a team will be dragged down to our level.

The offers from Penn, Cornell, and Princeton, which were contingent on his SAT score, were never firm offers.   According to Watson's father, Penn told him he would have to raise his score by something like 150 points to qualify.   He also had a lot of interest in Bucknell - made two unofficial visits to Sojka as a junior - but he also didn't fit under Bucknell's AI.

I'm always suspicious of self-reported offers (thus the "according to" and link) but the young man appears to be a legitimate student. Rice is a great school. I don't know how firm that offer was.
For the ultimate offer fraud, we had Kevin Hart of Nevada who appears to have grown up a bit since that 2008 fiasco.

Whatever. It is just quite interesting that 3 are leaving at the same time.

Watson is visiting Illinois and Creighton this week.    There is also reported interest from  Kansas, Villanova, UConn, Marquette, Stanford, and Wichita State.  We'll have to wait to see how serious the interest is.

bison: how in the h__l are we supposed to know what this kid's AI was?  You always seem to have more info than the rest of us but you, in this case, did not reveal the info, just that this kid had above averate SATs (above what average if I might ask) and "didn't miss the AI by much" (how much)?.  Everything about that kid seemed to smack of a player who didn't belong in the PL.  Now, what kind of student was he, and what was he majoring in (so I don't have to look it up)?.  And yes, I was harsh because someone has to be to maintain the fiction (I coud have used the word "notion" rather than fiction)  that PL players really are legitimate students.

Watson committed to Big East Creighton.

Creighton has two players in the NBA -- Kyle Korver and Anthony Tolliver --  and soon a third. It's a bigger stage but it's not Kansas. Good luck in the Big East.
