BU

When will this team start to play defense?
Ransom Stoddard

Well, we had been playing better team defense before this game.  But, as I have said before, it's still our lack of offense that is absolutely killing us.

BU's zone defense stymied us.  We had been competitive the last two games taking the ball to the rim.  Against BU's zone, we decided to start chucking up 3-pointers and the result was terrible - 27 of our 58 shots were 3s and we hit 5 of them (18.5%) and had a 29% FG% overall.  Against Army only 12 of our 59 shots were 3-pointers.

Gumbs has to figure out a way to stay on the floor.  She is very good in the offensive end, scoring 12 points in 19 minutes (and has started to hit more FTs) - but, again, foul trouble limited her minutes.  Gumbs is not good in the defensive end though.  She has to learn to rotate over and help teammates who are beaten and has to keep her place in the defensive scheme - several defensive breakdowns were squarely on her.  Ptasinski, who had been playing well coming off the bench, did not have a good game - she hurt us in the defensive end and her 2-12 shooting and 3 TOs didn't help.  Santarelli had a rough time against BU's talented bigs - she was 2-10 shooting and had 5 TOs - she rebounds well and shows promise at times, but, for the season, she is 30-107 (28%) from the field - you have to have better production than that in the post.  Against BU, we were outrebounded and outplayed in all facets of the game.

I do agree with the people who have seen positives or "rays of hope" over these last few games.  Ottewill-Soulsby was limited by foul trouble but played well again - she has had several strong games in a row.  Stipa showed leadership and played well - only 2 TOs in 38 minutes and 15 points.  I feel bad for Stipa - she is being ground down by all the minutes she plays and other teams have keyed on her as the only person who can bring the ball up the floor on our team.  Coach should give Holland more minutes to spell Stipa - after never being given a chance last year, Holland has showed this year that she can play (in the Army game, she had a spectacular steal in a clutch moment).  Agnello did not have any big impact on the BU game, but she continues to play well and plays pretty good defense.

I think in the rotation she uses, Coach is going with team speed over everything else, and, though I understand that, I still don't like it.  Hood, Ribarich and Lutz should all be getting more minutes.  It's not like they are that much slower than the other options, and their skill level on both the offensive and defensive ends would be an upgrade over those other options.  As someone pointed out in another thread, our "fast" lineup still looks slower than every other team in the league.

Totally agree, Ransom.

This team needs some wins (obviously)!
The Maroon

Not sure exactly what Lutz did to become persona non grata but short of a felony, she's paid her debt.
