Bucknell post-mortem

Failure to exploit Bucknell's failed fake.
FG decision.
Still it was a game and Lafayette competed and will keep competing.
There is a chance now that the L/L game will be a contest Lehigh needs for a share of the title.
I spent a long day in NYC and only saw the final quarter but it appears to be the best game Lafayette has played in awhile. [/quote]

It was a loss. How far we have fallen when we are rejoicing in a game by virtue of it not being a blow out.

Unfortunately so, on my part. Two chances left for another win.
Apathy seems to be ruling the board these days. Inevitable.

Well it was a game. Maybe we can now talk about football instead of the other crap.

I thought we managed the game away. Some questionable decisions. Drew Reed looked very poor in crunch time. OL did well racked up 170 yards. But we were shutdown late and we didn't adjust.

At least it was a game..

Smalley came back and had three nice breakups and some tackles ... Wadsworth came back and had three nice catches, one for a big gainer ... Staudle came back and the ground game picked up.

Three INTs, especially one at the BU 2, hurt ... so did 0-4 on fourth downs in the second half, three of which were around the Bucknell 30 ... no sacks of BU QB, while Reed was downed five times ... some badly-timed penalties. Those were my biggest negatives.

DeSean Brown's 110-yard rushing game ... Vangelas' receptions and 1 TD ... Amill's 51-yard run and 37-yard KO return ... Brown's 42-yard TD run and 110 yards ... Bissell's 43-yard FG ... some defensive plays by Rothrock, Bosch, Roberts. Those were my positives.

More players will return next week, but the task gets tougher against a Colgate team that stopped a two-point conversion to save a 31-29 win over Fordham.

That's how I saw it, too. Honestly, we jumped out early; once they woke up, down 14-0, it was pretty one-sided -- they outscored us 35-10 in the last 3 quarters. Still, no new major injuries that I saw, and, well, we didn't get shut out. Redemption can still come at Goodman.

Lehigh started freshmen at QB and RB. They found a way to get it done.

Enough with the injury stuff. It happens to every team, every year. Successful programs simply say - next man up.

You may fall off with a back up, but within an efficiently run program the next man is expected and demanded to get his job done. his 1/11th as we say.

Anyway, there are many, many positives to take from this Loss.

I know it stinks to feel good about a loss, but I tell you what. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't proud of the program, despite having a loss.

Somehow, our guys showed up and showed emotion and passion. Most would say there is nothing to play for, but these guys showed some heart.
That is a positive of this staff. They found a way to get the guys jacked up for a game that in many ways meant nothing.

I like Desean Brown, the kid is a good running back. I hope he works on his speed and becomes a little more fast twitch and explosive because he has good instincts for a RB and can catch out of the backfield as well. The kid is a good player.
The OLine came together and played better, they need work on pass protection and communication passing off men whether they are man or zone side, but looked much better.

The defense is scary, some real talented kids, and for whatever reason they don't play well. They constantly lose leverage which is the #1 NO-NO.
I'm sorry but that SCREAMS coaching! They also get discouraged and put their heads down after a big play, and rather than coming back and forcing a FG or fighting back and making the other team work, they give up. I have not been impressed by the way these young men have been coached on this side of the ball.

Bright spots - Smalley - good game, really is a all-conference kid with a lot of talent. Roberts - Played well, looks the part, hope he finished his career real strong. Bryant - love the upside this kid has, plays with a lot of emotion, he reminds me a little bit of the kid Romans we used to have. In the sense that he is athletic and can run well, and he has a mean streak to him. Hope he develops into a leader and heart and soul type kid.

Next week we will truly see what type of heart and soul this team has. What are we made of, can we man up?? The Gate is the real deal. Tough dudes from up in NY.

GoPards.

I was tied up for a lot of Saturday so i didn't get to watch the whole game. But it was good to see the guys jump out on someone for the first time all year.

I wanted to get the board's reaction to the 4th & 10 call to go for it instead of kicking the FG. I know you have struggled to block for FGs this year, but you are on the 25. Your kicker should be able to get it up high enough from that distance.

It was nice to finally see some semblance of the team we expected this year back on the field, but still way too many mistakes from veteran guys.

I probably would have kicked, especially after an illegal procedure penalty. 4th and 5 I go for it. 4th and 10 I kick. Frank felt we needed 7 to win, which we did. However he had made a 37 harder earlier and he has a big leg.

I don't second guess calls much however the direct snap to Brown puzzled me. That tells everyone what you are doing and when Brown ran wide he effectively strung the play out himself for the defense who had already stacked the box knowing it was going to be a run.

Not upset over the calls. If they had worked he would have looked like a genius. I was surprised but not mad. The blown coverages created bigger heartburn.
