Local Coverage: "Could be a big year for CCSU"

https://mobile.twitter.com/jppierson/status/766119426433351680

The Leopards surely can't overlook the Blue Devils. The key to kicking off our season is taking them down in New Britain!
SixtyEighter

They are probably counting us as a "W" based on last year's record. We should be in desperation mode to get a win from them. For anyone interested it appears that the game will be streamed on the NEC web site - their equivalent of Patriot League network.I believe it's free. I watched some basketball games on the site last winter and they were free .
edge29

Can someone with NEC knowledge please convince me why we should win this game?

They have 20 returning starters on a team that Lehigh just squawked past last year.  And 96 players on the roster with redshirts and JC transfers.

I'd love to be convinced with something more than Maroon colored glasses and hopeful optimism.  Help me out! Please!

The NEC has 40 scholarships, and CCSU hasn't been very good the past 4 years or so.  We should technically have better talent, but that probably isn't the case.

CCSU has a big edge at head coach however.  They have a young, dynamic head coach, and I wouldn't be shocked if CCSU is notably better prepared. We should win this game, but won't be shocked if we don't.

I don't think being young and dynamic is more important than experience.  Cornell has a young and dynamic coach but still only won one game last year and the year before. Winning comes from desire and work ethic. If everything else is the same ie. talent level, then the win goes to who wants it the most. Edge, I know our guys have a bad case of the wants and  they have put in the work.

I believe we will win this game because we are prepared to win. We have more talent, we have more depth, we do have a better program and we are severely underrated.

Well, they lost to Wagner, the only team we beat last year, 28-7 and the week before that to St. Francis.

This prediction game we play on all the boards is pretty silly.  We know next to nothing about opposing teams, especially OOC teams, and we accentuate the positive stuff we know about our own teams.  I like our OL this year and the prospect of several RBs whom I think very highly of, running behind them.  Our receiving corps is solid: Mrazek is terrific, Vangelas is a good one and Joey is a possession guy with terrific quickness, and we have depth.  Wadsworth is a budding star at TE.  Sr. QBs will benefit from the better protection this veteran/talented OL will provide. I just believe we'll score points.  I think we'd have to go back to the championship years to find equal D talent.  And I love the spirit and determination Honda talks about.

They apparently have an all-East DE that should be a test for our tackles.

I just can't wait.

Also Edge, I watched the clip on CCSU and they have a 6'6" QB. I don't think he will be running on us. Redshirts don't get the game experience of returning starters. JC transfers can add individual talent immediately to a team but it takes playing together to gel. Finally, I know our OL and defense is vastly improved. Lehigh was up 20-7 and CCSU scored again late in the game.
Andy

Great point on their Lehigh game, Honda. On the AGS board they say Lehigh squeaked by or some such. From the recap:

Lehigh finished with 445 total yards, including 263 yards passing. Shafnisky completed 19-of-27 for 263 yards and a touchdown.... Central finished the night with 274 total yards.

Shaf is feisty and a good runner but he's no Joe Montana, and the LU defense was a weak spot.  But, regardless we have to prove it on the field.

Too many times I've seen us pussy foot around early on on O, feeling our opponents out.  Let's take it to 'em, impose our will.  Get some swagger to this OL and let DeSean and CJ do their thing.  Let's go!
1990honda

Andy, I agree we need to talk with our pads.
NE Leopard

They have an excellent young coach. He won at the D2 level immediately. The last 2 years at CCSU he's struggled. This being his 3rd season, he is starting to get some of his early recruits paying dividends. From what I've heard,he's done a good job at recruiting overlooked in-state recruits.  I look for a battle. They definitely have athletes on the team.

Great points by all however I'm not yet convinced we're deeper.

I completely agree about punching them in the face from the start.  Spread type Offenses don't typically feel out a defense.  That's for more the traditional line-em-up-and-pound-em offenses we used to have.  It's definitely a sign of Frank controlling the O to a certain extent.  Turn Mickey loose!

If twenty more scholarships don't make you deeper than there is no reason
for FCS schools to not have the depth of FBS schools.
gopards

CCSU only returns 12 starters not 20 as they show on their website because they count long snappers and kickers in their returning offensive and defensive starters. Which makes the number 16. Then i looked at their roster for this year and 4 of their other starters are off the roster including the third leading tackler. Also two guys that their coach said in an interview in spring ball were not starters last year on the OL but will be this year are off the roster.
RichH

I wouldn't put too much reliance on schollie cap difference between PL and NEC. NEC can also mix in need aid up to the NCAA max of 63. We cant.

Interesting, gp.  Looks like their 1st team all NEC DB, Elmore, who came in from MAPS, is off the roster, leaving 4 all NEC from last year.  DE Bolling is their best player apparently, all East. And they have a soph DT who was league DROY last season.
bethlehempard

Elmore is out because of academics.
Some old some new below from STATS and the AP

OUTLOOK: The two-deep was filled with underclassmen last
season, so there's cause for optimism at CCSU. The mobile Pauldo
shared time at quarterback as a freshman, but he's no longer in
the program, leaving Dolegala to run the offense full-time. The
Blue Devils like the ball in the hand of the versatile Nash,
although the run game also is getting back Lytton, who was
expected to be the starter last year but was injured in
preseason camp. All-America CB Elmore, who racked up 18 passes
defended, was lost to academics, which means Brown must steady
the secondary. Bolling and LB LaGuerre are the defensive
standouts. Improvement is vital because the Blue Devils have a
tough non-conference schedule which includes James Madison,
Coastal Carolina and Penn.

Frank on now "listen live:

bethlehempard

Boston College head coach Steve Addazio was on the 1980 squad that played Lafayette. Penn State head coach James Franklin was the QB for East Stroudsburg's 1994 win over Lafayette.
There must be other BCS head coaches who played against LC, I can't think of them.
pardfan

If there has been one constant in the last three years, it's been lack of mobility at the qb position.  We have not addressed that to my satisfaction; therefore, the pressure on OL to come through is immense.

Two wins or less...disaster.
Three wins...ok, but not great
Four wins...break out the champagne

I think Eli Wallach put it best in "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"
He said, "When it's time to shoot...shoot.  Don't talk."

It's time to "shoot."
pardfan

As I understand it, this is Frank's last year under contract.  If that be true, I say he needs at least three wins this year--given difficulty of schedule--to be asked to stay.  If CCSU game doesn't have a positive result, he's done.  No amount of excuses will save him if three isn't reached IMO.

Two programs that are proud of their history are also nervous as heck about this game and what its result portends for their seasons.
It's huge for both teams, both in a turnaround year.

The nucleus of starting players and returning veterans will be on the field Friday night.  Injuries are part of the game.

In my estimation, our success hinges upon whether we show up ready to play and execute on the field.

I'm optimistic.

Pards, Go get it done in New Britain....
Andy

Not sure it's an "injuries are part of the game" situation here, or, after 30 injured last year and 5 starters already out this year, rather it's a "what the hell is going on!?" situation.

Down to backup to the backup on OL and we haven't even started yet.  Simmons was looking good. Dammit.

Anyway, guys have to step up and get it done as you said.
1990honda

How many starters got hurt on the field? I know neither Kerns nor Kaiser did.
How many games did Simmons start last year? I believe players get hurt at a lot of schools and you don't hear about it. Simmons was sitting out last week when I was their and he said he had tweeked his hammy. He thought he would be ready to play Friday. Did he pull it since then.

I think it fair to say the Frank emphasizes regular season games and winning a championship. Doesnt seem all that concerned about OOC, but that's just my outsider's take. He wouldnt risk further injury to Simmons.  BTW, Simmons is a young man who had initially committed (I believe) to another top notch PL program and switched to us. I thought he had some trouble when asked to fill in last year, but looked good in the practices I saw.  Hope he comes back soon. We have talented, athletic kids backing him up, but inexperienced.
1990honda

I am not taking anything from Simmons. I think he had a great camp and he earned his spot. I would love to see some of the younger guys get some playing time before conference play starts. Andy I didn't see the article before I commented but I still think we talk about our injuries too much.

This is true, but also comes up because our head football coach talks about it every time someone sticks a mike in his face, and therefore appears in every story written about the team.  He used to mentioned that we don't have scholarships to explain away ever loss, now that he has a full compliment of scholarships he speaks about injuries.

Twas the day before CCSU, and all through the land
NoT a Leopard fan was working, productivity was canned.
The tailgates were planned and bar meetings set,
Old buddies argued about how great the team would get.

The coolers were packed full of bratwurst and beer,
The weather channel said the skies would be clear.
Now it is September 1st and the wind had a chill,
For throwing a football and meat on the grill.

I flipped the tube and there's Gary Laubach 's face!
"What a season we've got! It'll be quite a race!"
Ole' Leopard looked quite parched, as he searched for a brew,
After slamming one down, "It's Lafayette College Football anew!"
Now everyone's tied, nothin and nothin.
Every PL team's got some hope that this year will be somethin.
The Leopards and CCSU should be up in a row,
For tomorrow in New Britain, the season's a go.

But tonight rest well, your sleep you will need,
Your hunger for Lafayette College Football, tomorrow will feed.
As I turned off the tube, I saw The Leopards in my sight,
"Lafayette College Football to all, and to all a good-night!"
Pards Rule

Besides they have to atone for the last time the two teams met, Sept. 12, 1981 in Easton (Bill Russo's first game) as Frank Novak and the offense went wild and the defense clamped down in a 51-0 romp. Scott Bailey backup Pard QB threw a TD with nine seconds left for the final score. Russo said they blitzed him and he was instructed to hit a wide out. I was there! I still have the program that I got Bill to sign in Nov. 1983. He said "yeah, I remember that game!"

We needed this W.  The biggest positive is we looked the strongest and the most cohesive in the 4th Q.  Next.
Franks Tanks

Good to get the W, congrats.

That was however pretty poor CCSU team.  Our guys are quite a bit more talented than those guys.

Overall good job by the D.  5 turnovers and 10 points is a good day at the office.

Offense was a mixed bag.  Drew Reed had his best game in some time.  Our passing game has the potential to be deadly.  Mzarek and Wadsworth are really good.  Polumbo, Chenoweth and Thomas are also athletic and explosive. If we had a hint of a running game, or better pass pro, Drew could've really shredded CCSU.

The line was worse than I thought they would be.  Lots of badly missed blocks, especially in pass pro.  I can't understand how this continues to  be such a glaring issue year after year.  We couldn't run at all.  If our line can be average, just average, we might be ok.
bethlehempard

It's a win and we're tied with last year already.
Meanwhile Army is ripping off 6, 8 yards per play on the ground against Temple.
Is it too late to give back that check and bring in Mercyhurst?
Pardsfriend

Well done

Congratulations Pards.

I thought Reed played very well.

d' gave offense many opportunities, especially in first quarter.

Thomas has earned more time on the field. He runs in a burst upfield, which is sorely needed in this offense.  Mrazek looked dialed in.

Chenoweth found a seam in second half.

Safeties played middle of field in strong coverage.

Enjoy this, and get ready to beat Delaware.

It's a win and we're tied with last year already.
Meanwhile Army is ripping off 6, 8 yards per play on the ground against Temple.
Is it too late to give back that check and bring in Mercyhurst?

Army really isn't much better than Nova or Delaware.  This is a perfectly acceptable game for us to play.

The hens beat up Delaware St. yesterday, and appear much improved.  I hope we are up to the task.

Just got home from watching a very difficult game in the 2nd and 3d quarters.  The offense ran the bubble screen to Joey or whatever it is call over and over again after it worked the first two times.  CC quickly caught on and it beats me why the coaches kept calling it.  The rushing attack was non-existent for the first 3 quarters.  The D played well as CC ran a variety of formations.

But then the 4th quarter started and LC finally found a running game - Maybe the CC Defense was worn down.  Very solid TD passes to clinch the game.  #17 was open all night against CC' short Corner backs.

All in all, a satisfactory outing.  The CC facility was more impressive than I expected but lack of food concessions did not help my hunger.  It looked like the student body showed up late and left early.  Not much school spirit.

The LC kids are tough and broke lots of tackles not to mention some big hits in the secondary.  The bottom line is the team showed progress but the quality of the competition ramps up dramatically in Easton next week.

It's nice to say we are 1-0. On to the Blue Hens. Congratulations to the team for closing out the game strong.
