Colgate Post Mortem

Game ended three hours ago and no thread... everyone has checked out it seems.

So: Drew Reed... STINKS.

We showed some flashes on offense but consistency and play calling were poor at times. Frank decides to punt late but a Colgate timeout allows the coaches to make and case and guess what? First down.

Defense was again good at times but no consistency. Too many big plays. If we didn't give up oh... five each game... we wouldn't be awful.

Also terrible referee calls cost us two TDs on defense.

Did anyone think Gate played dirty?

Ah well... Lehigh was been smoking teams. Not good. Not good.

There is no running game. Without that we are done, in multiple ways. The defense looked worn out near the end.
Colgate was better though they didn't play real well.
Just a sad day all around. Bucknell pushed Fordham to the last minute.
Lehigh has freshmen at QB and RB who are doing great.
I don't blame Reed but why not try somebody else?
Lehigh will be out for blood. Ideally Lafayette will be ready and it will be a game. It could happen.

I give you guys kudos for not playing like a 1-8 team. The Pards came out with fire. I was very impressed by some of your skill guys. Our defense kept us in the game, but I think your future is better than many posters indicate in your board.

Six years of losing will do that. The kickoff fumble led to the only TD.
Did going for it on fourth and one at the Gate 30 surprise you or is that SOP?

Drew Reed does not stink. That interception late was as much on Chenoweth as Drew. Chenoweth never came back for that ball, instead posting up and waiting for it to reach him. If he comes back for that ball he catches it.  I'm not down on Joey at all. Glad we have him, good player. But he has to help his QB out on that play.

Some people here complain about us wanting to run the ball, cussing Frank because he is an old running back and he likes to run the ball. But we will not win without a running game and a balanced offensive attack. Combine that with no deep threat and defenses can pull their safeties op and stop the run as well as playing tight on the short routes. Until those two things change we can expect to see 7- 8 in the box.

For me the frustration lies in the fact that every year Frank talks about about having a strong running game.  Year after year he fails to deliver on this.  He had one of the best RBs ever to play at Lafayette the last few years and still struggles to find consistency in the running game.  Ross had some huge games, but he also got shut down too often.  Not Ross's fault any means. Frank can't even get the one area he claims to be an expert in right- the running game.

Also agree that Drew Reed doesn't stink.  He is a very talented QB, but he hasn't developed.  He actually made better decisions with the ball before our offensive staff had a chance to work with him for newly 3 years.

It is just very frustrating.  Same thing year after year.  A fire drill on the oline.  QBs that just don't progress like their peers at other schools. It is becoming very hard to watch.

It is frustrating. You raise a point I agree with. You have to ask why we have not had a history of developing a running game. I have an idea of two but will keep that to myself. I do think we need to find/recruit/develop a deep threat. We have to get the safeties out of the box and stretch the defense.

Not passing judgment on anybody but Drew made lots of decisions today that I just couldn't figure out, throwing into heavy traffic when other options were uncovered, forcing throws, sliding early rather than reaching for the first down, and others. I know: decisions are easier from the laptop than from the field. It's just sad - such a great school and a program with great history and a bunch of kids playing the last of their football careers and the team is 1-9. What an awful way to leave the game. Perhaps we'll find redemption in 2 weeks, but I'm not betting on it. I've gotta believe that the squaks smell leopard blood. I'll be watching from a bar, ready for either outcome.

Thanks Indian. Well we were in it until mid 4th - better than many previous games. I know a stunning 22 players are out with season ending injuries on the Pards and we are getting some back without season ending injuries. Im rooting for Gate to win the PL. Ironically, I cashed some checks at TD Bank on a rainy afternoon on Long Beach Island (LBI) decided to take a little loop instead of driving straight back to my condo and saw a pickup on deserted LBI with a bunch of Go Gate stickers on Penna. Ave. Didn't see the dude or I would have stopped. Watch the game on net. Also ironic today exactly one year ago attended my first game at Andy Kerr (after 3 inches of snow fell night before) and watched Leopards come back from 16-0 deficit (and just moribund) and win on last second Thomas Martin (#26) FG. Where is Martin now? He was a frosh and I think missed a FG in that Colgate game last year before hitting winner with no time left. Enjoyed my time in Hamilton and the nice hot choc at Saxbys Coffee that was well needed that day. Hope we both can give Lehigh the one-two punch in the next two weeks!

By no means are our guys capable of 11-0, but by no means are we capable of 1-10... but here we are.  We have the personnel to be 'decent' but not dominant.  Coaching can make you dominant.  Look at Columbia.

Have we gotten so PC around here we can't say if a player stinks?

I'm not even talking about that last INT fly... it was a fire drill, under pressure, and you are down by 9.

He overthrows a wide open WR (ok.. maybe the WR slowed down:  I don't remember).. but he made a throw at a guys' feet on a routine play, unpressured.  Triple coverage throws.  Strange decisions.  You can see it in all our games.

We have so many other problems I'm not even saying the QB is the 'problem'.

BTW, did watching Vangelas catch seven passes, including a couple of really nice slants, make you wish he had never injured that hamstring in summer camp? And, do you think Wadsworth is going to be a difference-maker in the future?

Sideliner, love the thought of Vangelas, Mrazek, Wadsworth, Joey playing together. Also great seeing CJ get more PT particularly at TB. But yesterday OLmen were getting beaten 1 on 1 at key points in the game. Has to improve. I happen to believe we have the talent on board to have a darn good OL the next several years if they can get and stay healthy.

I agree Andy but the rest of the league has better quality at QB and without that it's a tall order to be competitive.

No rocket science here: Recruiting priorities
1- QB
2- OL, need tackles to supplement the young inside guys
3- DL, need beef that can pass rush
4- RB, speed with vision
5- WR, deep threat assuming we can get a QB that can throw further than 20 yards accurately

Here is The Morning Call's Monday-after story. The bye week doesn't mean a week off from anything.

I did not say you cannot say a player stinks. that's your call and it comes with message boards. What I am saying is I can disagree. I'll give you another example.

I was critical of our safeties in the Holy Cross game. However after further investigation on several of those plays where our safeties looked out of place or a missed assignment, it actually was a young corner or two not knowing the read and not communicating the coverage back to safeties and leaving them out to dry. The safeties didn't have the same coverage in place as the young corners.

Sometimes I want to puke when a player gets hurt and everyone says, "next man up". Its not always that easy. Sometimes a young kid is ready, sometimes they are not.
