College to build "Easton Skyway"

According to the Express Times, LaFayette College has committed to building a 170' elevator from "The Spot " at the bottom of the hill to the main campus.  The 9.4 million dollar project design work is about 50% complete.  The College will have approximately 85 employees working in downtown Easton. No word on whether Tony Rhodin will be allowed to use it.

I can think of 25 things needed before this asinine project. 9.5 million of endowment provided by alumni donors. Lease mini van.

The rest of the campus facilities plan seemed very well thought out, but I struggle to find the need and value behind this project.

Ideally it won't turn into a vertical urinal. There was speculation of a tram downtown, sort of a ski lift, many years ago.
Maybe this is something the city encouraged.
I have to admit walking up the steps is a little harder these days. I will use this if they build it.

9.5 million absolutely wasted.  We nickel and dime the swimming pool improvement and yet we have tons of dough to spend on THIS?  Who pushed this?  Eighty five employees who will probably never use it?  The mayor?  Film and Media Studies students? In four years I walked down the hill at that point maybe four times;  and yet, for cars, it is THE key entry point.  It instantly gives one a feel for the place. I'm sure most would agree that the Film and Media Studies center is absolutely tasteless, why would this elevator be any different?

My initial reaction was that it's too expensive but it will get a lot of attention for the school and could turn out to be a good thing.
I don't know if the taxpayers putting up half the bill will agree but then nobody asks them.
Elevators of this size that I've been on sometimes have an operator and it wouldn't need to run 24 hours per day. Operating an elevator sounds like a financial aid job. Or maybe for a post for a burned-out alumnus.
New York's 190th Street subway station, near the Cloisters, has an elevator of about this height (no view) with a human running it still and Luxembourg (city) has one, also with an operator, down to Der Grund.
I often park downtown for a meal or drinks and walk up. This could spur more town/gown interaction.

There is now a new article on LehighValleyLive.com regarding multiple projects that include housing, book store, outside business, etc. I'd try to bring it over but I'm too lazy and stupid to do it. Worth reading

I guess they are talking about something like this:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incline_elevator

Engineering students and faculty long ago proposed and designed a funicular to extend from what was then Jenks Hall (now the Simon Center) down to Third Street.

The other idea was to construct a multi-story academic building directly into the slope.  You would enter on to the roof of the building and exit (via normal elevators) at the foot of the hill.
