Dianne gets a transfer student

Kelly Loughney, who led North Hunterdon High School's girls basketball team to the 2010 NJSIAA Group 4 championship, announced she is transferring from New York University to Lafayette College.

Loughney won't be eligible to play for the Leopards until the 2012-13 season, but will be allowed to practice next season and sit on the bench for all home contests.

The 6-foot Loughney was West Jersey Player of the Year as a senior at North Hunterdon. She  averaged 8.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a freshman at NYU.

"Kelly will increase our depth at the forward position," Lafayette coach Dianne Nolan said. "She is a versatile player who will help us as a rebounder as well as a scorer down low and from the perimeter."

Hey that's great... students want to play for us instead of dropping off the team. How did this one get away to begin with being a highly regarded local player? Sure she comes from D3, but she has some good numbers for a frosh. Welcome aboard.

If she was D3 why does she have to sit. Isn't NYU D 1??

No NYU is Division III... even if they were DI and she transferred to Lafayette, she would have to sit a year anyway.  It applies to all sports apparently, not just football and men's basketball.

I thought if you were div 3 and went to a Div 1 school there was a waiver if you transfer and her old school could in any case waive the one year requirement. I'm too lazy to look it.... up maybe Bison 137 knows.

If you transfer down a level, e.g. from D1 to D2, you don't have to sit.   If you transfer up a level in football/basketball/baseball/men's hockey, then you do have to sit.  In other sports, you don't have to sit if it's your first transfer and your previous school has OK'd it.

Based on the article, I assume she's coming as a walk-on.  Is that correct?

Not sure if she will be a walk-on or a scholly player. Coach had 2 junior commits and was looking for a frontline player back in March. She was looking at a local kid but that may not have worked out and this may be the third scholly. However, she was also talking with 2 walkons, one the daughter of a well know professional athlete.  Coach N may be Bruces best hire ever, with due respect to Andrew. She has unbelievable energy and enthusiasm.

Totally agree that Coach Nolan may be a very good hire.  On an amusing note, I think she was a bit surprised at the girls' reactions when they beat Lehigh over there - that may have been the highlight of the LC Sports season.  I simply love that video.

I can't get enough of that video either...Coch Nolan had no way of knowing that the victory kept us from going a dismal 3 and 27 against Lehigh this year...
