Discussion of Scholarships at Holy Cross (LFN)

I was peaking on the Lehigh forums.  The poster who runs the Lehigh Football nation blog had an interesting post about the recent discussion of scholarships at Holy Cross.  I guess this piece ran in teh winter edition of the Holy Cross magazine and included HC president, AD, VP and another key administrator.  The blogger did a nice job of inserting key discussions.  What was telling is basketball is the "chosen" sport at Holy Cross.  Football is a distant second and I would argue it is third behind hockey.  The other telling part is if the league pushes for scholarships in football, HC will either leave the league or drop football.  Pretty much the president has ruled out scholarships in football.

As bizzare as it may sound I have it on very good authority that HC will start adding scholarships in other sports starting in the incoming class in 09. Their administration has a thing ag football scholarships.

Re: Discussion of Scholarships at Holy Cross (LFN)

Just another reason to read the entire HC board as we had an extensive discussion of the article in December when the issue came out in the General Sports Discussion category.

Regarding your statement ...

I'm not sure how you draw either of those conclusions.

Here's what Fr. Mcfarland said:

Quote:
Fr. McFarland: Right now the Patriot League allows scholarships in every sport but football. And there are several schools that would like to institute scholarships in football. But we’re not one of them. In any event, the restoration of football scholarships would have to be a league decision. Beyond this, football scholarships would be tremendously expensive.

That does not sound like a position statement should the PL vote for scholarships. It sounds more like a statement of the current situation, to me.

- The PL does not allow football scholarships.
- HC is not in favor of adding them.
- The league makes the rules on scholarships.
- It would be expensive to add them.

Don't see anything that says HC is gone if football scholarships are added.

Later in the article, HC athletic director Dick Regan says

Quote:
Dick Regan, Athletic Director: In a perfect world, sure. But, as things stand, I’m not pushing for them. I was a CFO for a good part of my career. I have a feel for the financial issues we’re seeing right now. So sure, I’d love to have football scholarships, but I don’t think it’s practical or realistic right now. We estimate it would cost us a million-two to a million-five a year. Because if you add football scholarships, you would, of course, have to balance that with an equal number of women’s athletics scholarships. That’s a lot of money given all the other pressures we have right now. For that reason, I can live with the status quo as long as our peers do.

I bolded the key sections.  It backs up the costs McFarland referenced and certainly doesn't sound like a threat to drop scholarships and football if the league votes to adopt them.  Sounds more like we'd go along if pushed and/or pulled!

Is it possible that HC takes that course of action and drops PL football or football completely?  Yes, anything is possible.

Based on this article, do I think they will?  No.  In fact I think this article does more to support HC going along if the league votes for them than has been previously speculated.

CHC8485:  You read my post as saying this is definitely happening.  I take it as if the league votes on football scholarships (I said this in my post) and it passes, HC will not participate due to cost.  he goes on to explain the additional costs needed to fund scholarships ($1.2M to $1.5m) which tells me this issue has been studied and/or discussed at some very high level in your administration and BOT.   Also look some of the other language used in the article.  Pretty much having football scholarships is cost prohibitive but not hockey.  Hmmmm.  Could the money be raised, probably but no one even mentions that as an option.

We've been through this type of discussion at Lafayette with regard to basketball scholarships.  Our former president used the term "not in support of basketball scholarships" and guess what, we did not get them until after he left even though it made sense financially and academically.  When your president says "there are several schools that would like to institue scholarships in football.  But we're not one of them."  Then he goes on to say "in any event" , which i take to mean even if they did, we won't.  When the president of a college makes a statement like that, it is the official stance of the college.  And it won't change while he is still there.   HC does not support football scholarships no matter what.

Reading that article really supports some of the other "chatter" that float on these boards.  That is what I interpreted from that blog and from other things I have been reading on the many patriot league forums.  In other words, my interpretation (and it is only MY opinion) does not come from this one source.  Yes i am talking IF the league decides to push for a vote.  I do think a vote is coming sooner rather then later as the league is trying to find ways to remain ahead of the NEC and competitive with the Ivy.

I think we agree that nothing will happen until a vote comes, whenever that is.  But your president has drawn a line in the sand already.

Lafalum:  I also heard that they will add scholarships in other sports.  It makes sense.
