Don't Count'Em Out Yet...

Nice win against against a nice Army team...Samantha Jordan's really emerging as a force.

Final:  54-42.  Lafayette never trailed and had a double digit lead through most of the game.  Jordan had her first double-double (points and rebounds).  Fiacco was a force inside, totally disrupting the Army offense.  The bad news is that Fiacco injured an elbow in the final 5 minutes and had to leave the court.  Nolan's comment:  "We looked like a basketball team."  With Fiacco the Pards are playing their best ball of the year.  Without her,...

Dani taken to the hospital for Xrays. Hope for the best but fear the worst.

Can't understand how Army is 4-2, they can't shoot. Anthony and Baranek a combined 7 for 23. The Cadets shot only 12% in the first half. With Anthony and Baranek only getting 25 and 29 minutes we controlled the boards 47-36 and scored 13 second chance points.

We did a good job of getting to the foul line making 20 of 28.

True, most of Army's team can't shoot - although their FG pct for the year is better than that of LC - but I wouldn't put Anthony in that category.    She's hitting about 50% for the year - second in the PL behind Leer.   Also battling Romine for first in scoring and running away with the rebounding title.

A very disappointing article about the game in today's Mourning Crawl:

http://www.mcall.com/sports/colle...men-0126-20110126,0,1066918.story

Not a mention of Fiacco and what I perceived as her considerable inside intimidation.  In my opinion (Maroon, help me out here), she, almost singlehandedly forced Army to the perimeter where they become a bad team.  Even when Army moved Anthony, their top scorer and rebounder, to a high post it didn't seem to help much.  At one point in the second half an Army guard penetrated and committed to the basket.  Fiacco stepped in front of her and the Army guard turned and passed the ball to Lafayette's Downey.  An extreme example, but there was lots of this going on.  I thought (again, I need help here, Maroon) that Anthony's early foul trouble was caused by her having to change her game to deal with Fiacco as much as "chippy" calls.

Mandy Housenick, the Mourning Crawl reporter, usually does a decent job, but this time she went in with a pre-written story and wasn't going to change it no matter what happened in front of her.  In her mind the story was about Army's two leading scorers, both of whom are from Parkland High School in Lehigh County.  She wanted a homecoming piece, and bygawd she was going to do it.  Tohell with the game that was actually played.

PS:  Did anyone notice Dan Weiss in informal attire sitting with John Loose at the game?  Kick the Can Dan seems to be on a PR campaign to repair his image.  First there was the report of his spirited pep talk to football recruits a week or so ago, then he got some attaboys from Bill Rappolt in an Express-Times blog, and now actually seeming to enjoy himself at a D-1 athletic event.  Walking both sides of the street, are we, Dan?

I, for one, always have given Dr. Weiss credit for supporting the games.  I see him at most games I attend, including lacrosse.  Often he is there with the missus and the kids.  I think Weiss wants us to be a competitive Division I college and I think he enjoys the games and the interaction with the players and students.

That said, there's a lot else going on with which he has to deal - mostly money.

I also thinks he wants Lafayette to remain in the Patriot.  Otherwise he could have simply said screw it at the president's meeting and had us join the D3 Centennial Conference or some such thing.

My guess is that Housenick wouldn't have even graced the APK Sports Center at all if Anthony wasn't there. It's all about local angles anymore. She wrote a preview column about Anthony a couple of days ago. I have to wonder if the game would have gotten as much space as it did if Easton-Northampton wrestling had gone as scheduled.

You are right that Fiacco changed what Army's game plan - right on all counts...But she's going to do that every game she plays in. It's like if you cover the Lehigh men - you run out of ways to say McCollum is awesome even if he has 25 points.

We are going to see plenty of Fiacco stories  - heck she even got her own feature.

Fiacco deserved mention, at the very least her injury is a HUGE bit of omitted information to anyone who thinks one iota about this team, but to me the story was Samantha Jordan as she really set the tone from the very first possession by taking it right down the throat of the defense. Leone - doing the commentary - thought it was Wright as he's used to seeing her do it, but not Jordan.

To Housenick's credit, she at least interviewed the right person. But you are correct, the "story" was going to be about Anthony no matter what she did.

But Fiacco isn't in the circulation area...Newspapers are dying C2...Gotta keep it local...Let's hope they bought a ton of papers in Orefield this morning!

I'm hearing she's probably out for the season. Not sure what the injury is but apparently not a fracture. I think she has to undergo more tests.
Lafalum

Oh geez, i hope that's not the case but we are all praying for a speedy recovery. Her enthusiasm and skill on the court is impressive she is a real asset to the school and the team.

Ouch....I should have known if she's on the floor for more than 10 seconds something must be seriously wrong. Anyone else notice how hard she works to get back on defense?

The fans, the school, everybody has really fallen in love with this girl. I hope she has an easy recovery.

That really stinks. Hoping for the best.

If she's out for the season, is it too late to get her a medical redshirt?

Yes, unfortunately, the rule is around 30% of schedule and we're better than half way.   We'll miss watching Danielle, get well soon.
Bogus Megapardus

Man, just I love watching Danielle play.  Plus, she's just a delightful person judging by her interviews.  She's real credit to Lafayette.

Get better soon, Danielle.  I hope and pray that Lafayette directs her to the very best medical care available.  This fine young player represents the future of this team for the next several years.

I've never been a fan of medical redshirts unless a fifth year is needed for academic reasons...I don't want to sound like a righteous academic...but all I saw the 5th year players do was water down their courseload. It just seems lame to come back just to play a sport...Notice nobody tries that in Track or even baseball...

I'm getting away from the point of this thread though - get well soon Danielle..

Fiacco is the best womens bball recruit Lafayette has had for years.  The team will go straight downhill without her.  Let's hope for the best - and hope the school lets us know quickly what is going on with her.

She has the opportunity to change the PL - not known as a big womens conference.  Nolan must be gritting her teeth if Fiacco is done for the season.
