Drexel

I hope its my computer but I am seeing we are losing 18-5 with 5 min to go.
This is soooooo not like last year.

Sadly the read from some I have spoken with is that last year was an aberation, that we caught folks early and the true version to the team was what we saw the last few games, extending to this year.   I don't think thats 100% correct, but its hard to argue with it based on what we have seen so far.

Overall I think we are much more competitve than we were 5 or 10 years ago, but it's not good enough.  Lehigh seems to be seriously upgrading their men's and women's programs and we should be doing the same.  Games are on ESPNU all the time (Dartmouth-UNC tonight), and we should be able to grab a piece of the Lacrosse limelight.

That would require some forward thinking - not in Bruce's DNA.

Forward thinking DNA is nowhere to be seen anywhere in the management of the institution.

Indeed:

2003: 2 - 12 (Mangan takes over as head coach)
2004: 2 - 12
2005: 2 - 11
2006: 2 - 10
2007: 1 - 12
2008: 4 - 9
2009: 6 - 7
2010: 8 - 6
2011: 2 - 5 (at this point a 5 - 8 record is perhaps the best that can be hoped for)

So the team is winning more games than during the first five years of the Mangan era but I agree with the post that last year may represent the zenith.  We're no longer getting beaten by the doormats of D1 but the team needs to figure out how to get some tough wins over quality opponents.  I didn't see the Drexel game but the only thing I can figure is that their guys were a lot more athletic.  That was one of the big differences in the other blowout this year at Navy.  From the box score, it also looks like we got killed on faceoffs and ground balls which contributed to a huge disparity in shots and time of possession.  It is discouraging to play Penn and Bucknell pretty close and then have the wheels fall off so quickly.  Army is going to be another Excedrin day I fear.

Thanks for posting the records Pardlax.  Also I appreciate your insight as I never played Lacrosse, but I am getting more interested in the sport each year.  Coach Mangan and the current players deserve a lot of credit for getting Lafayette to the point where we are respectable and can compete with top 20 teams like Bucknell and Penn.  Now is the time to invest in the program and turn the corner from competitive to consistent PL contender.

I too have found it a great way to while away the Spring. Particularly since my youngest girl took it up in HS for a few years. Lehigh has expanded schollies for M & W lax recently as well as the soccer squads. We still have a way to go to get up to Bucknell, Army and Navy with Gate just a bit behind them. We are good enuf now to be competitive but not beat them consistently. But soon Very Happy

I must say that looking at the Patriot League cumulative statistics, it is depressing to see Lafayette last or second to lost (thanks to Holy Cross) in virtually every category.  The only categories in which we are not near the bottom are goalie stats (saves, save percentage) which partially reflects being the high number of shots our goalies have faced.

Lehigh has men's Lax scholarships?
RichH

Merit aid, I cannot say. I know that Cassesse was given a substantial increase in financial resources when he came in. Given the last 2 classes he has spent his $$ well. W lax did get  8 schollies. To prepare for football?? Speculation runs rampant Wink
Lafalum

I would agree to prepare for football. While WE are standing around looking for a" place to put our thumbs" if you get my drift.  It's not like we are world beaters without them.
seenalot

"Looking for a place" ???  Seems to me we have discovered exactly where to put our thumbs and they are firmly planted.

Take a look at todays web site and see if you can find more than one story about a win.  Gets a little hard to creatively say how hard we fought or how close the game was.....
