Extermination of Fraternities on Campus

Despite strong claims by the college that it supports fraternities and Greek life as a whole the facts do not lie with only 2 active fraternities left (DU and Phi Psi). This past semester alone the college has shut down or suspended two fraternities (DKE and Zete) with 150 years of history for trumped up charges and then slandered active members to reduce alumni support to protect them. Alumni and students have stood by for too long. We need to stand up now or there won't be Greek life on campus in 5 years.

Former Lafayette College Connected Communities:

17 – Delta Kappa Epsilon – Suspended Operations 2014
16 – Zeta Psi – Closed 2014
15 – Kappa Delta Rho – Closed 2011
14 - Phi Gamma Delta - Closed 2009
13 - Chi Phi - Closed 2005
12 - Theta Chi - Closed 2003
11 - Theta Delta Chi - Closed 2001
10 - Sigma Alpha Epsilon - Closed 1997
9 - Sigma Chi - Closed 1997
8 - Sigma Nu - Closed 1995
7 - Theta XI - Closed 1992
6 - Phi Delta Theta - Closed 1993
5 - Delta Tau Delta - Closed 1988
4 - Kappa Sigma - Closed 1986
3 - Alpha Chi Rho - Closed 1985
2 - Pi Lambda Phi - Closed 1982
1 - Phi Kappa Tau - Closed 1974

That is truly pathetic.  I would be pounding on the BOT daily.  The students should stage a massive sit in!  Fight back.

isn't the DKE house currently being renovated?

How did they get in trouble without having a current house on campus?

Nearly every poster on this board was a member of one of those houses that are no longer active.  Concerned alums and students have provided constant feedback over the years to the admin/BOT, withheld donations and filed lawsuits.  Nothing has made a dent.  The school is intent on removing all fraternities regardless of tradition and value they bring to Lafayette College.  We are beaten down and broken.  Guys that are smarter than me may be able to speak to potential legal actions that may be taken, but I have nothing to offer.

The BOT and Admin ruined the LC that many of us attended.

DKE was handed a cease and desist order by an officer of the college several weeks ago. I understand that order has been removed and college is denying it ever happened. I have seen the letter though. There is a lot more to this involved.

How many of the Board of Directors were fraternity members?

Yes I just saw it on Saturday as I parked next to the construction fence to party completely alone on March Field! Unbelievable! I saw 3 or 4 or 5 guys maybe my age all together on the left side of the Phi Psi porch. I just heard one phrase "I remember.."  There were no students with them. At least they had a house to go to.

It's time for posters to get real. What has killed fraternities is out of control behavior. If my boys behaved like the ungrateful sloths that populate colleges these days, I wouldn't waste my money on tuition. They'd be going to work...hard work until they understood what responsible behavior is.

No, it's the administration finally not tolerating irresponsible behavior.

However, it's hard to ignore the heavy-handed tactics and trumped up charges for some frats.

Also, it's hard to ignore that the BoT is not accommodating houses that want to recolonize or have been 'reformed.'

My national fraternity has recolonized dozens of chapters that had been suspended ranging from Lehigh, Bucknell, Colgate,Penn State, MIT, and others. Of the list above from the undergraduate poster, how many have been allowed to be recolonized?? We are totally out of step.
At my chapter at Lafayette, our undrgrads recently caught a campus safety officer spred eagled on the floor trying to look under a closed door. That's reasonable???
The center for irresponsible behavior has long been known to be South College. Ask any undergraduate!!!

A year before the end of the Weiss regime I was told by two faculty members they were told that the fraternities were going to be driven off. I believe they were trying to pin the death of the student at the time on the fraternities and diverting any blame from themselves for sponsoring a drunken out of control party ( riot??) on college hill. Remember he was left alone in his room in Kirby.

Tell me with 19 discreet fraternities and 3 social dorms it wasn't easier to control a college full of young men!!! Yes punish the bad but replacing it with a free for all with our students drinking and driving up route 22 to Lehigh or going downtown is a better circumstance.???

Gestapo tactics will only lead to secrecy and rebellion, maybe it's time for some politically active students to start up a  SDS chapter at the college...I remember it well in the late 60 ' s there was a very active SDS chapter at the college ...Protest Protest  Very Happy
BackintheDay

Alison Byerly stated for all to hear that fraternities are welcome and will be considered for reinstatment.  If she reneges on that or the college slow rolls the process, she will wind up as disliked as Dan Weiss.  She better think about that or she'll lose the alumni like her failed predecessor did.  Regardless, the College moves forward with its new visions, which inlcudes the ongoing eradication of some traditions such as fraternity life.
seenalot

Actions speak louder than words...and as best I can tell there is NOTHING directionally positive for frats.   If there is, can someone point it out to me?

Just repeating a line over and over doesn't get it done or make it remotely true......except in Washington....
BackintheDay

Agreed; college knows that is how we feel.  Ball is in their court and a student committee toi define the process of reinstatement.  Time for them to put up or shut up. Hurry up and wait.

How do you explain the fact that frats thrive at many of our peer schools?  Are we to believe that only young men at Lafayette College behave in such a manner to force the elimination of their frats?

Membership in fraternities nationwide has grown since the beginning of the decade. In my own fraternity ( DU) undergraduate membership has grown nearly 70 pct since 2007.

Does DU admit women now and if so, is that part of the growth?
I was at "Back to the Womb Night."
Wow. Even then it was a little too much.
The week after that party, a female professor led a class discussion about the party. She asked me why students weren't doing more to push the college forward.
I explained that I was there to get a degree, have a good time and get a good job (all missions accomplished too) and that I was there for myself, not the school. At least I was honest.
The party led to some good discussions but it was a terrible fire hazard with the stairway and bar decor.

Ancient history 35 years ago. DU was suspended for 5 years after that  came back. The Bot believed their own propaganda then and thought no one really wanted to be in a frat any more. Today it still is on campus (one of three left) with nearly 70 members with average GPA above the all male average. Also still an all male Greek with over 80 chapter nationwide and in Canada. DU has a very active alumni commitment which explains their longevity on campus.

Which house had the lifeguard-stand problem on the quad?
I remember DU's demolition night. That was insane.

I recall that also.  I was a freshman living in McKeen, with a great view of it.  I think it was actually called "Frustration Night", because it was during midterms.  They had an actual demolition derby in the parking lot behind the frat house.  They also dropped a full size refrigerator from the third floor fire escape.  Hard to imagine that happening now.   Shocked  Cool

DKE would throw appliances off the cliff in the not so distant past.

Perhaps another divisive "interest housing" proposal . . . The San Fransisco Students Community Organization Commune?  The Romanian-American S&M/BDSM House?  The Peruvian Student/Llama Love Association?

Spoke too soon. More false hopes and delays. Some open conversation tomorrow night. New process of how to get back on campus. Become a social group, then a colony, then a frat or sorority. Amazing how much money this college has lost over the years from running off so many alumni. I meet so many alumni now that have disconnected themselves from the college.
bethlehempard

Unfortunately there is nothing new about alumni disconnecting from the college. Many don't have a real feel for the place, or loyalty. They're not bad guys. They just have other priorities. This happens at many schools. I know many PL alumni who don't visit their school or follow its teams.
As for fraternities, and this is from a guy who hit more than his share of pub nights and drank about four times his share of beer, things were out of hand.
Now the pendulum has swung the other way.
My own house was brought down by two things: irresponsible brothers and cocaine. 80-plus years of tradition destroyed by 40 little boys who didn't even care when we told them that we, the alumni, were ending it.
There must be middle ground. Other schools have found it.
