Feb 2 Faculty meeting report from task group

Recommendations will be brought before the BOT next week to:
Increase the schools enrollment
Move to need blind admissions
A change in structure in faculty salaries.

These are general initiatives to be approved by the Bot with details on implementation left to the administration and faculty. Several implementation steps were considered to get to need blind admissions including reducing or eliminating some some merit based scholarships ( Marquis Scholarships and DC based posse scholarships)

Although I am in general agreement with the increased enrollment,t need blind admissions is a laudable goal but fiscally risky.

i have long been a proponent of increasing the enrollment.  With out growth, the school will die.

Moves make sense. Can phase in need blind by doing it for domestic students first and international students beginning in 2027 to slightly reduce fiscal risk.

These are great, bold moves for the school. Will it mean construction on the Hill?

Presumably, it will either mean construction or buying more property on the Hill for student housing.

Thanks for sharing the link. Good to hear from the Pres.

A bit late but better than never. I truly hope Lafayette actually follows thru with this plan.faithfully. Absolutely necessary for the college to not become another Gettysburg. Best of luck.

Rich: your comment is what some of us fear e.g. Gettysburg.  But I remain optimistic that we are committed to D-1, the Lehigh Rivalry and the Patriot League.  In case anyone needs reminding, the D-1 Athletics and the Lehigh rivalry are the things that distinguishes LC from the legions of D-3 private colleges out there such as the Bullets from Gburg (as opposed to Pburgh!).

Very good news regarding the expansion of the school.  It is my sincere belief that we will never be Gettysburg.  We will maintain our D-I status and membership in the PL barring a drastic change to the landscape of college athletics.  We need to get better from the AD on down, but many of our programs have adequate funding, and should be much better.

If any of you "like" the Lafayette College facebook page check out the comments associated with the announcement. I was surprised to see many negative comments regarding the expansion of the size of the school.  In my opinion adding a few hundred students will not change the student experience, but will provide significant financial benefits of scale.  Perhaps if those individuals read this board, and heard the astute analysis of Lafalum ed65, and others they would understand why this move is critical and very beneficial.

How could you be surprised by the negative comments?  You only have to look at this site to see the negativity many Lafayette grads have.

Ok, good point, but I had assumed nearly everyone would see this as a positive for the school.  Oh well.

The complaints on Facebook were lame, to say the least.  Several were from students or recent students griping about lines at meal time or in the library.  Several were from people who are not close to the College and who don't understand anything about the economics of the school.  Everyone I have spoken to is excited about the enrollment increase.  While, as Lafalum points out there are risks with need blind admissions, our well paid administrators will figure it out I'm sure.  Maintaining the faculty student ratio is important for the US News Rankings.
