Field Hockey Recovers, Womens Soccer Gets SlammedSaw my first (and last) womens soccer match today. Or should I say mis-match. American won 5-0. Whats more worrisome than the loss is that the Pards started 7 seniors along with 4 freshman. Team has no speed and is not quick to the ball, Looks like a couple of the senior starters are not in good condition.
Field Hockey recovered from yesterdays beating, outlasting Georgetown in double-overtime, finally winning the flickoff 3-2. The freshman goalie looks like a keeper having made a penalty shot save in regulation and a save on Gtowns last flick.
This is another team that needs more speed and quickness as Gtown frequently came around them to steal passes.
We may have actually won the game in regulation, having scored a goal as the clock ran down. But apparently the hugh scoreboard that has everything else does not have a horn. After consultation the goal was waive off. The pards had at least 5 shots bounce off the goal post during the contest.

Actually as it turns out, the scoreboard does have a horn but the referees don't like it to be used. They ask that one of the ball girls run down the sidelines and yell when the clock reaches 30 seconds, and then count down from 10 seconds to 0. I have seen many games this season, and it is a terrible system because frequently the ball girls forget and so one of the stats/scoreboard girls have to do it. In this instance it sounds like the ball girl did remember but the wind was so strong, the referee couldn't hear her.
Difficult situation for those girls keeping the statistics to be in. I was watching the clock and the goal was definitely scored after the clock ran out. The girl keeping the clock immediately started shaking her head that the goal was not legit, which was admirable since she could have easily said it was and ended the game.
I don't know why the refs don't like the horn, but they definitely need a better system, and one that doesn't put so much pressure on the ball girls and the stats people. It wasn't their fault but a lot of people blamed them after the game, from both sides. I'd hate to be in that position.

I've only ever caught FH at the collegiate level at Metzgar. I know they've had that system for at least 20 years--I'm assuming it's how they do it at all FH games? Or is just a Lafayette phenomenon?
