Fordham Post Mortem

First things first: what was the final score? I left early. Couldn't take it anymore.

After a promising start, mistakes etc etc doom us. Plus Fordham is a good team that makes errors deadly. We just are not very good.

Whatever.

Consider that this 35-7 game was almost dead even in the numbers (except TOP which the Pards dominated) for the first 28 minutes:

Sorry, even stats isn't making me feel any better about this game, this season or the direction we are heading.  We have an offense based on being able to run and we can't.  Until some aspect of that changes the outcome(s) wont get appreciably better.
NE Leopard

We left a minimum of 17 points on the field. Red zone offense play selection needs to improve. Question QB football mentality!! Would we have won, maybe. Very worst case a competitive scoring game, not just statistically. The future like looks good if the team can make some plays!!

We're going to see sunshine next week, maybe it will give us some new energy.

Turn it off after the second blocked FG.  We have athletes but no OL and it shows.  It is what it is.  Can we forfeit the Harvard game? Sad
seenalot

How do you question QB mentality and then say the future looks good?
SixtyEighter

Maybe we will beat Georgetown and maybe we won't . But who else on the schedule can we beat? And please don't tell me beating Lehigh will make up for the rest of the dismal football season. Maybe their defense is poor but so is ours and their offense is competent and ours is not so I don't see a win there either. And even if we do manage to beat Lehigh all that would do for us is give a second or at most third win. This level of futility is truly pathetic especially in light of the resources invested or more appropriately wasted.Fordham is only great compared to us- They were sqashed in the playoffs last year after beating Sacred Heart - Nebrick et al notwithstanding. We are non competitive.Harvard will put 50 points on the board to help us celebrate Homecoming. We need to stop comparing ourselves to Lehigh and try to compete with the good teams in the FCS Division. At present we can't even compete with a good NEC team like last year's Sacred Heart or beat  a weakened Delaware from the Colonial Conference or whatever the name is now.I saw nothing positive in yesterday's game.Any team can march up and down the field between the 20's and rack up meaningless statistics - but two blocked field goals and as many or more "red zone" failures are truly awful. You have to build a team to beat the best on your schedule not the mediocre or the worst. When Bill Russo came in he stated his goals was  to build a program to beat Delaware.

Fordham

Always a good deal of self flagellation on this board.  Fun for an outsider to read. Normally lively, but perhaps you are over doing it here.  Fordham is really good and there is no disgrace in losing to them.  The rest of the league is also likely to struggle with the Rams.  While I never thought that the Pards are all that great this year, the Wagner game looked like a ray of sunshine.  But repeating that performance against Fordham was a big stretch, IMO.
Good luck against the Crimson, but that will also be tough as well.

No different than the naysayers on the Lehigh or HC board ,the fans on the Lehigh board are calling for Coen's head, but at Lehigh Coen will be fired if he loses to the Pards again.

A few comments.

Stats are for losers.

Offense is not built around just running the ball. It's built on ball control. Those short passes to the flat are essentially runs. Get the ball out in space. We ran the ball pretty well early. Brown had right at 50 'yards on the first half.we don't really have a deep threat right now. Hopefully 2 will be back soon.

We adjusted defensively. The coaches put in several new defensive schemes just for the game. 12 new blitz packages alone, several different looks to get pressure.

Poor execution in the red zone. No excuse on the pick play that got called a penalty. Could have been 21-14 at half. You cannot commit that penalty in that situation.

3 field goals blocked this year over the same gap. No excuse. You mean to tell me you can't block a guy for .8 seconds? With not stunts, just a straight up block?

Operation time has to be faster on fg attempts. Several guys could have blocked those kicks. Snapper must help block on ep and fg attempts.

Last, we miss senior leadership in a big way. Obviously we miss Keller in a big way but we miss Brockman and Wright at well. Those guys used to get in the boys faces and encourage them. Now they are not even on the sideline or practice. It's not just the physical injuries that have added up, it's the mental aspect as well
Pard4Life

Well we are about even with Lehigh. The only advantage we MAY have over them is a willingness to get up for the game.

It was Homecoming at Squawk Mountain and nobody was there. Weather wasn't great but there wasn't even any activity in the parking lots or anywhere else. Sad state of affairs around here.

What happened to the 90s and 00s? You had at least three maybe four teams in the league each year able to go out and beat somebody. Now, we are lucky to be competitive with the mid-tier Ivy teams. Cornell isn't great and they made a game with Colgate.
flyfisher

The Ivy League is better than the PL on average. Their rosters are twice our size in depth. They attract the top talent among the kids with the grades. Hatvard's 3rd or 4th string QB had an NC State offer. Joe Schiano. They have 7 QB's on the roster. The freshman of the year in the ACC last year at wide receiver left an ACC school to transfer to Yale. Bo Hines.
bethlehempard

Sweep the rest of the league and it's a winning season. Crazy but true.
I suggest a trip to the Columcille park near the Water Gap for Pard fans. It's calming especially on a beautiful day like this.

Yeah, that's the only highlight really.

Unless you want to breakdown the FGs

If you look at the overall impact of the freshmen and sophomore classes, you have to be optimistic. The O Line gave Drew Reed plenty of time last night. He needs to get rid of his happy feet, and get rid of the ball instead of taking sacks. QB should be a priority in recruiting, along with more depth on the O Line.

Here's a followup from The Morning Call.

And the game coverage. Brad's is chopped up into smaller, but interesting pieces.

Rosters and Lafayette

In coaching, I'm very skeptical connecting roster size with success on the field.  What counts most is the quality of your practices and whether they are competitive to replicate game conditions.  Two quick CAA examples.  Villanova and Richmond both have 89 players (minus injured players) on their rosters.  In other words, equal to Lafayette, or less, depending on injuries.  Richmond is 3-1 and Villanova is 2-2, with Cats beating Fordham in the Bronx.

One game management note.  LC can't huddle when there are :24 seconds on game clock, on the Fordham 19, clock running, and no timeouts.  And you are down on scoreboard.  I'm sure the staff will correct this.
Pard4Life

That clock management before half was inexcusable. Didn't they practice that?

And who is responsible for blocking on special teams? OL coach?

So many things wrong... injuries hurt but how does that influence poor clock management?

I agree on the roster size. Doesn't hurt Fordham. They brought in 16 guys last year?
SIDELINER

Fordham is still way ahead of the rest of the Patriot League when it comes to football scholarships. Its first class of scholarship players entered in the fall of 2010, which means this is the sixth year of scholarships there. The rest of the league has three years.

In its first three seasons with scholarships, Fordham was 5-6, 1-10 and 6-5. It wasn't until the fourth year that things took hold with a 12-2 season. Patriot League coaches have been preaching patience for years, and maybe that makes more sense when you look at it this way.

Also, Fordham is doing more with transfers than anyone else. This year's team has players from Marshall, Temple, Rutgers, Florida International and Southwestern College (a junior college, I think).

Taking a page out of American's (basketball) playbook.

Fordham has 29 freshmen on the roster.  22 were announced as signing LOI.
