Fordham Pre-game: Ain't no mountain high enough?

Inspiring victory last week, but the big boys come to town this week.

Rams have only lost to Villanova... the 'Nova that narrowly lost to UConn and not the 'Nova that got throttled by Penn.

Rams lost 10 of 11 starters on defense... only returnee is an All-PL LB.

Also lost nearly all of their offense except Chase Edmonds, but the QB and WRs are on fire.

Can the Pards get #2?

There will be a Frankosaurus Chalkboard for this game.  Please post your top keys to the game, other than simply "contain Chase Edmonds."  Try to be specific and constructive.

The Frankie awaits you.

Just quoting from Paul Reinhard's Sunday Morning Call column (previously posted by Sideliner):
"Lafayette trainer Matt Bayly had a little less day-after rush on Sunday as the Leopards came away from Wagner without adding to the long list of players roaming the sidelines in sweats because of injuries. Tailback DeSean Brown could have played but was held out as a precautionary measure. Lafayette is hoping to get safeties Kaizer Butler and Jerry Powe, cornerback Phillip Parham and wide receiver Tim Vangelas back this week."
That's really good news.

Here is The Morning Call's coverage from the Tuesday luncheon.

http://www.mcall.com/sports/colle...dham-luncheon-20150929-story.html

Coach T didn't sound real positive about getting a lot of players back this week. Tuesday and Wednesday practices were supposed to give a better picture. On a conference call, Fordham coach Moorhead said 15 players were making their first college start when the Rams opened the season against Army. The quarterback was a third-stringer last year, but he's not playing like a third-stringer. An observation: tight end Dylan Wadsworth could end up being one BIG kid. And, he can catch. He's only a sophomore. Does anyone out there watch the luncheon feeds on the website?

Brad questions Drew Reed.

The All-PL LB (Hodge) was DPOY in 2013 and is the preseason pick in 2015 - but he didn't play last year due to injury.   In addition to him, they do return a starter at LB plus a DB who started early in 2014 before being injured.

My keys to beating the Rams:

O
- Take care of the ball. This Rams team may have been young to start the season, but 4 games in and they are seasoned and starting to gel. Being on the wrong end of the turnover battle will make this impossible
- Establish the run game. Drew won't be able to do it all himself, and keeping Edmunds off the field is a must.

D
- Minimize yards after contact. The Fordham O is very simple (with Nebrich at QB they only ever lined up in 2 different formations and were in 11 personnel almost every snap and I doubt that will change with this crew) but every single play has a read component. On almost every run they have 3 step routes called and the QB has the option to read out of the run and throw behind the stacked box. Because of these reads the Fordham O has the opportunity to be "right" on every play. The only way to survive that is to make sure no extra yards pile up. Keeping a 3 step slant to a 4 yard gain instead of 15 is a must as is tackling Chase Edmunds.
- Attack. This is harder to do without Brockman (shoot without half of the starting defense from opening night) because you need to be able to win the 1 on 1 battle in order to attack. The few times Fordham will drop back we will need to pressure the QB, and getting Edmunds off his line is the only way I have seen to slow him down.

A win will probably require big plays in all three phases.
Will need at least one special teams success - a run back for a TD would be nice - a fumble recovery deep would work.
Will need some successes on defense - sacks, fumble recoveries, interceptions - without those our chances are small.
Will need some stretch the field big plays on offense.  Need Drew to perform like he is capable, need receivers to gain separation - as Mike Joseph pointed out last week, you need to attack the middle of defenses with quick LB's and DB's.  Breaking a few running plays will help - a few deep passing plays will be essential.  Dink and dump is sure to lead to failure.

I couldn't agree more with the notion of stretching Fordham's defense with the threat of the long ball.  We have a couple of speedster freshman WRs who are going to have to be sent long on convincing routes and be targeted - even if Drew has to overthrow them.  Getting a few 2nd-and-short opportunities to go long certainly will help.

Edmonds is going to get his yards.  That's a given.  We're just going to have to win the field position battle and contain them to FG opportunities if possible.  I'd really like to see us get the defense off the field on third down but I think it's going to be a long day for the D and they'd better be prepared for a marathon.  Like with any team, they tend to get sloppy when they're gassed, and we have insufficient depth to rotate guys in.

I imagine this is going to be a high scoring game - but hopefully not just for the Rams.

There have been some changes in Sportsbook lines since it was posted (in the Wagner post-game thread).  The most substantial change by far is in our game.  The line Tuesday morning was:
    Fordham (-16) at Lafayette o/u 57
The line now (Thursday afternoon) is:
    Fordham (-12) at Lafayette o/u 56
Someone's been putting some cash on the Pards.

This is fun, and I've never seen it before.  A time-lapse video of Fisher Field for the 2012 L-L game.

The real game took a lot longer. A LOT longer.

I want to see the Yankee Stadium version of that.  (Oops, I forgot.  CBS has the rights.)  Evil or Very Mad

It's looking like the weather will not be as bad as predicted earlier in the week.

Brad Wilson's preview He includes the Delaware game as one of the two best of the year. I guess that's accurate if one had to pick two.

The team's goals remain possible and outside is this game is there another league contest that looks forbidding? Perhaps not.

Practically no one in the place for Yale @ Lehigh.  Doesn't bode well for this evening's attendance.

that post doesn't make any sense.

Yale has turned the ball over three times and is still dominating Lehigh. The B&W offense is terrible today. 21-7 Yale early in the fourth. No now 27-7. Now 27-9 after a dumb two-point attempt that went the other way. Really stupid call. Good to see Yale look dumb on that.

I'm thinking we're not even going to need Ross Scheuerman to beat those guys.  They look awful today.

Holy Cross, on the other hand, is destroying Albany 37-0.  It's late in the 4th and Cross is giving the backup QB some time.
