Georgetown Prediction Thread

What’s the skinny for Saturday’s opener at Georgetown?  Injuries?  Surprise starters?

Before you get carried away with labels like “new and improved” for the Hoyas due to their unexpected close call at Holy Cross where they were actually leading going into the 4th quarter, check out some of the stats and comments:

1st Downs:  HC 28, Georgetown 7
Total Yards:  HC 519, G 169
Passing Yards:  HC 414, G 131
Time of Possession:  HC 39:37, G 20:23
Georgetown’s offense had just over 100 yds. after their first possession.

Sounds more like the ‘saders shot themselves in the foot to me.

A knowledgeable Georgetown fan who is an occasional contributor on this board, states on AGS that “Georgetown's offense may be a step behind last year...think about that one for a while.”

I’m thinking that we will see a workmanlike performance on Saturday with no real feel for how the Pards will fare the rest of the way.  Something like 31-14 in a pretty ho-hum affair.

Coaches will tell you that a team shows the most improvement between the first and second weeks. Therefore I expect Gtowns offense to be better but I also think we have a better defense than HC.

G'town always is a tough game for us.  Remember, we needed a great INT by Andrew Brown to seal the win in 2004.  That said, 18-7 Pards.

Welcome back, Paul Reinhard.  A nice, upbeat article about Rob Curley in today's Mourning Crawl:

Also, 5 questions for Lafayette football:

And yet more - a blog article by Reinhard:

Thanks for those stats, c2, pretty revealing.

Having seen more than a few sluggish season opening first halves offensively against the likes of Marist and Sacred Heart,  I'm looking for the defense to keep it close early on.  I dont like opening against a team with a game under their belt and I havent forgotten the home loss to GT a few years back where they were doing their silly song singing routine on our field.

If I'm GT of course I'm crowding the box and forcing our receivers and OL to prove themselves.  If the Pards plan any new twists offensively this season, I cant see them exposing too much of it Saturday. I look for the usual Mo pounding it, Coon sweeping, Stripe end around, screen to Rudy and wheel routes to Cumming and DeAndre.  I'd like to see Doty involved on some delays/crossing patterns, maybe begin to establish Layton as a go-to-guy to give future opponents something to think about.   Interested to see the O-line make up--one article had Hart at RT. Looking forward to a comfortable, mature, in charge, very game Rob Curley.

The roster HT/WT has not been updated.  Games notes today?  GO PARDS!!

A sidebar to Paul Reinhard's articles in Sunday's Morning Call listed this week's starters.  It included a 255 lb. guard.  Must be sophomore Scott Biel.  I can't find the article, and can't think of who else it might be.  Some questions for the more knowledgeable here:

1.  How long has it been since we've seen an O-lineman this small?

2.  Is this our first indication that we are digging real deep into the barrel, or is Biel the real deal?

The pard prevail 28 -7 on a strong ground game against a weak GT squad.

Naive question

Sorry for the naive question, but as a new Leopard fan, I've been trying to figure out how to get on-line broadcasts of away games. Is that possible? Does this LSN all-access system work? I've tried getting it running on my Mac system and am failing completely, and there's no obvious help line. Alternatively, does anyone know if there are pay-per-view options in the NYC / Fairfield county area? Thanks for any help; I'd really like to see the G'Town game but I can't make the trip.

Welcome to the LC "Family" as dysfunctional a grouping as you'll ever meet;)

You can call CBS Sports at CSTV at 1-888-870-2788 or email them at customersupport@cstv.com for help. I have been a subscriber for the past few seasons and while it inevitably has problems in the replays, I've not had any problems in watching games live except for Liberty last year when a storm bungled the Satelite feed.

Hope this helps and again welcome to the jungle.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. I'm calling it 17-7.

We are a love/hate group, and you'd better not take the former too seriously, and you need to roll with the punches for the latter.  A family "must" however:  we circle the wagons for that Saturday before Thanksgiving.  Even I will agree with one of my "family" members at sometime or another that week.

Oh yeah, 17-7 is not what dreams are made of.  Please increase the margin of victory.

Thanks, and my bad

2008pards - thanks for the All-Access tip - worked like a charm. Carney2 - I clearly underestimated the O, or overestimated the Georgetown D. Going into Q4, against G'town, HC had 6 at home, we had 28 on the road. My apologies! Still some room for improvement (special teams) but the Leopards looked sharp in game 1. We'll be undefeated in PL until at least 10/24!

I'm hopeful no one will offer that "Gee, Georgetown is getting better this year..." platitude. That game was clear evidence to the contrary.

Frankly, I saw some good things.  Let's face it, the Hoyas got screwed by the schedule guys:  opening at preseason no. 1 Holy Cross, and then getting matched up with the League's best defense.  I thought that Georgetown's defense did OK, but was on the field too long.  Perhaps the offense will develop a little once the Hoyas start picking on people their own size.

That offense is dead in the water. It's probably as bad as any I've seen in 15 years.  Georgetown had seven net yards in the first half and almost as many dropped passes.

There were some Georgetown post-game quotes talking about they're hoping the season doesn't now spiral downhill. To talk about that in week two is a major red flag.

I agree DFW, the Hoya's QB looked quite poor.  He threw a lot of poor passes and it doesnt appear he can get the ball down the filed at all.  You guys have some big athletic kids, but the Hoya's look just the same as always.

What has happened to Tucker Stafford qb who we recruited but chose the Hoyas?

He's now the backup punter. (No, I don't get it either.)

Then again, two of Georgetown's starting receivers this season are converted quarterbacks, its tight end is a former OL and the punter wears #84 because he was a wide receiver coming into the pre-season.  Go figure.
SIDELINER

I saw a guy who I think might have been QB Brady's father going after Coach Kelly after the game. He had to be held back by others. He must have been angry about Brady being replaced in the end of the game by freshman QB Isaiah Kempf. The kid is 6-3 and he had a gun for an arm.

DL Andrew Schaetzke, a soph, looks like he could play for anyopne in the league. Overall, it looks like Kelly is making baby-steps strides forward.

Lafayette had the studs, though, so a big group of recruits got a look at what the top of the Patriot League looks like. How about all those big-play touchdowns. Mitchell Bennett did not score, but he's going to be a biggie. And at least on this night, it looked like Mo White made the right decision when he opted for a fifth year. Now, keep him healthy for 10 more games.

Don't be too hard to Davis Rodriguez, either. There were some funny things happening with the wind. Besides that, at least one of his kicks looked like it was definitely good -- but he got so much leg into it that the officials couldn't tell that it was inside the posts. No. 29 will make his share of positive contributions. He was making 'em from over 50 yards in the warmups.

Eric McGovern didn't play in the secondary, and his sub -- his brother Evan -- had an INT. But in the second half, Hoyas made some good plays in the air, making me wonder if the DBs are still not set in stone. Nick Oliver is still hurt, and frosh Darius Safford will soon get his chance to shine.

Liberty is going to be a much stiffer test this weekend. The way they operate with transfers and such, it's impossible to gauge them until you see them. Watch out for No. 10, Mike Brown. On Saturday, he ran the ball six times, caught 13 passes and completed 10 of 12. He also returned 3 KOs for 107 yards. Wonder if he sold hot dogs at halftime, too.
