Grentz talks about how the job came about

"As coaches, we have to figure out ways to beat UConn."
She's speaking very generally there.

I see she is on the road already…does she have any scholarships to give?? I think Nolan had announced two recruits in December!!

It looks like Bruce and Co are all in on the hire!!

Even if she has no scholarships to give this year, why not go out to the high schools and camps and leagues to introduce herself as the new HC  . . . and as the one who will be bearing gifts next season?  Who knows, after her much-too-early retirement from coaching in 2008, Coach Grentz might even long for the travel and crappy food and Hampton Inns and wrong directions.

The upside here is almost unlimited.  It's really a one-in-a-generation opportunity to bring in a nationally-known, name-brand coach.  As for the downside, well, what's the worst that could happen?  I certainly can see why McCutcheon is all in.

"Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, nice to meet you.  I'm Theresa Grentz.  I've brought Division I teams to the NCAA tournament fourteen times, and I have an Olympic bronze medal and two World Championship gold medals as a coach.  My skill as a college player was immortalized in a major Hollywood movie.  Would your daughter like to have that kind of opportunity as well, or would she rather go to Lehigh?"

I believe she has 3 to give. We were a little unbalanced with 4 graduating this year but they only gave 2 for this coming year so we should be at 3 for the next 4 years unless the go the 4 or 5 route to bring in some quality players. Of course that limits your scholarships down the road.

I'm not sure, but I think this is the last weekend they can recruit for awhile.

How does this work?  Have most of the better players for 2016 already been spoken for?  Is Grentz primarily looking at leftovers and a very few "quality" uncommitteds, or is there still a fairly open landscape for her to wander in?  If her prospects are limited might she not be better off holding back one or even two of those "3 to give" for next year?

Carney, we have already recruited players for the 2015-16 season, as I mentioned above. So they are out looking for rising high school seniors (those would be current high school juniors).  Nolan only recruited 2 players for next season, one of whom is the daughter of former basketball player Theresa O'Connell, class of '90. So there is one scholarship available for this year to bring us to 12. Grentz could use it if she found an unclaimed senior out there who she thought would improve the team. Possible?

So, if she used it now, she would only have 2 for next years recruiting, unless she threw a few underclasswomen off the team.

What we have here is a failure to communicate.  Not unusual with me involved.  Anyway, my post was questioning the availability at this point of "quality" rising High school seniors destined to begin their college careers in September, 2016.  Are they pretty much spoken for at this point or is Grentz still in the running for some good kids?

It's rare but sometimes there is the trickle down case where a player thinks she can play at a UConn, etc. but doesn't get a look.  The next level down may have an opening, or may not etc. Keep in mind the women's "pool" is not nearly as deep as the men's. We don't want to grabbing players out of the shallow end.

You will need to get a season ticket to the women's games next year so you can do evaluations on the basketball players like you do for football. I'm sure RefRider and the guy who sits behind him could be a big help to you.

Thanks.  Your comments about attending women's games is tongue in cheek I realize, but something to consider.  Not the "evaluations" thing, but better attendance than I have had in recent years.  Frankly, I am looking forward to the Grentz era.

Any stats on her? Who else recruited her? Stars are worthless to me

And they should be - - - especially for the women.   Rankings for the woman HS players are FAR less accurate/reliable than those for the male players.  And for mid majors, they aren't very good for the men either.
