Harvard has announced today a complete change on aid. Under a new policy Harvard will ask families who make up to 180,000 dollars to pay no more than 10 pct of their annual income each year. That pecentage gradually decreases to annual incomes of 60,000 where they will pay nothing. In addition, home equity will no longer be considered in aid calculations.
Lafayette on the other hand will raise tuition, according to sources, nearly 6 pct again this year. (4 pct over inflation). Yes, Harvard has 35 billion dollars in endowment, Lafayette however, has nearly 1 Billion dollars in endowment.
Duke has also instituted a plan increasing aid to counteract rising tuition costs joining Yale,Princeton,Davidson and other high cost institutions. This is an acknowledgement that 45,000 dollars per year is too high a price to pay for tuition, yet we continue to try to match the unrealistic sticker price which almost no one pays at the "prestigeous" schools.
To my mind the only reasonable answer will be targeting aid on a merit basis to attract the best and not try to be all things to all people. We will also need to be more efficient. As a non scholarship league we are not competitive. As a competitor for top students we are out of the picture with a merit formula (Marquis Scholars) that only pays 16,000 dollars. That's not even 1/2 of tuition!!
The Ivies have also announced increases in class size while we are reducing it!!!! I'm confused by our strategy....We are a competing in a pool for less students and asking them to pay more.

This is why I keep arguing that scholarships are not necessarily the answer in beating the Ivies. I guarantee you that Princeton and Yale are also studying a similar proposal and probably will have something in place by next year. They can simply buy any athlete they want.

Scholly's of course isnt the be all and end all but it is the only way to remain competitive. We are not going to beat the Ivies in recruiting wars even with scholarships, but we dont need to beat them just compete for a few athletes. Conversly without scholly's we are teraing very very few recruits away from the Ivies. You are also not considering the other side. Yes with Scholly's we still may not be getting a ton of kids away from the Ivies but we can scoop up all else. Right now we are losing kids to Nova, and Richmond, and even Monmouth and Albany. Getting these kids will make an even greater difference than winning some Ivy recruits, and that is the real Scholarship benefit.

Cornell has now announced an aid plan similar to Harvards,Princeton, and Yale. We are now in a sea change in aid and behind the curve in the non-scholarship sports. For all practical purposes recruits go to an Ivy (Harvard,Princeton,Yale and Cornell) for free and there is no 63 man cap for football or 13 and 15 person cap in basketball. They are in the same catagory as the service academies except without the military commitment

Scholarships are at least 3 years away. As you have stated, the Ivies have so much money that us haivng scholarships is not going to make a difference. Frank has to use the new facilities, recent record and charming good looks to get the right players in. And he has to make it a priority to beat the Ivies. He has the talent.
