Harvard PREgame Thread

From Paul Reinhard in Sunday morning's blog:

"This is an interesting team. Next Saturday at Harvard, we will get a pretty good idea of [whether] they are not just interesting, but also outstanding."

That's it, folks.  I don't think that anyone should argue that this is a critical game for the 2009 season (no League championship or playoff bid on the line, and it isn't Lehigh fer gawdsake), but it is THE "show me" game of 2009.  Is this truly a team for the ages at Lafayette as they have at times appeared, or merely another of those pretty good teams that were, in the end, simply mirages that broke our hearts?  We need at least a toe to toe effort.  A win would be decisive, however.

Back in August this was one of the games that I had penciled into the "unwinnable" category.  Not anymore.  Harvard is good - and no worse than advertised.  The Pards however, are showing signs of greatness.  Last night's "we will not be denied" effort against Columbia can be read either way.  I am choosing to go with the positive interpretations and against The Curse.  I'm thinking that Lafayette finally has what it takes to get this done.

A heads up to those who insist on treating poor ol' carney2 as the stuff you step in while walking your dog:  I will be away and incommunicado for most of this week and into next.  So the question becomes

If you beat up on carney and he knows not of it, does he feel the pain?

Why the f*ck would you disappear right before one of the biggest games the Pards play this year! I'm even thinking of going to Cambridge!

So...as I think about the game this weekend, I'm wondering how likely it is we can employ the same tactics we did to beat Yale. I know Yale's O-line was suspect at best, but if we could get that same sort of pressure on the inexperienced Harvard QB I think we will be in business. Such a game plan might also work well to neutralize their RB who I think is pretty good. Anyone know if Harvard has a good o-line? I would imagine they have to to enjoy the success they have had thus far. Of course if we bring the sink against them our d-backs would have to do a hell of a lot better than they did last weekend. God...I'm nervous already.

A couple of things:

1. Can the administrator change the heading from "Beat Yale" to "Beat Harvard" on the Front of the Forum page?
2. Harvard does run the ball but they seem to mix it up pretty well. They also will challenge our pass defense with a 6'4 TE    and 6'0, 6'4 and 6'6 receivers. We'll have our hands full dealing with them. Big receivers always seem to hurt us and            these guys look like they can all play.
3. Big time character game this week. Can we finally beat Harvard? If so, it'll get us ready for the PL Championship run.

Go Pards

That, or BEAT LEHIGH!  That works year-round!

This team made history with the first victory over Yale. Can they do it again and go 4-0 over the ivies?

Go Pards!

That is why God created replay on LSN.  I shall catch the entire adventure on Monday evening, but with very little of of the excitement or anticipation that I would have savored on Saturday.

The Vegas line will be interesting....

REVERSE THE CURSE!

Heard Frank last night and read Reinhardt's column in the MC this AM. Sounds like Hahvahd has a strong D line. Starting to get worried. Hope Stan can get the boys up front fired up!

Go Pards!

I'm not worried about the O-line. I think this group can hang with the best of them. Admittedly Columbia's blitz package gave them fits but I don't think Harvard can replicate that package. It sounds as though their defensive backfield is their achilles tendon. If they throw the kitchen sink at us Curely should be able to pick them apart. That's the theory anyway. In fact I was about to post suggesting that this may just have to be an air show if we're going to beat them. That would be very exciting if we could beat an old nemisis with a very new style of offense.

Don't get me wrong though...I'm nervous too. Tavani says, on film, this is the best team they will have faced all year. Better than Liberty. better than all of the other teams we squeaked by. It stands to reason therefore that we will need to play better than we have thus far to get by Harvard. What's encouraging is Harvard hasn't really blown out anybody yet and they have played some crap teams...Lehigh comes to mind. I must admit...I also have it in my head that we just don't beat Harvard. I hope the players ddon't have similar thoughts. I am tired of making the trip to harvard and walking out disappointed.

We shall see.

VERY late, but the line is finally out:

Harvard by 5 1/2.
