Holy Cross baseball

Holy Cross beat Nebraska over the weekend in the NCAA baseball tournament.  They lost to top seed Oregon State, and will face Yale next.  Yale also beat Nebraska and lost to OSU.

Holy Cross baseball was terrible for a long time, and now have a tournament win against a Big 10 program. Why not us?  We need help and direction from administration, but can't Lafayette do what Holy Cross has done?

By the way when was our last NCAA tournament win?  We all know we have 0 in football and basketball.  Have we had any in field hockey or wlax over the last 30 years or so?  We're wins in the baseball tournament 50 years ago the schools last NCAA tournament wins in any sport?

Believe it was soccer perhaps a dozen or so years ago - and think it was one win - just going by recollection too lazy to look it up right now.

Holy Cross has won one PL title in 27 years.   Also they spend less on baseball and have less scholarships than LC, so I"m not sure they are the program to emulate in baseball.   Yes, they did win a game in the tournament, but that has been done at least six times by PL teams in the past decade.    It's not unusual to get a win in the losers' bracket.

What's funny about Holy Cross is that I looked at the bracket thinking "Yale or Holy Cross will actually get a win after they both fall to the loser's bracket." In the end, they both end up beating Nebraska... and for what it's worth, if Yale wasn't in the same region as #1 Oregon State (52-4), they had a chance to make a run.

The PL Baseball Champion has now won an NCAA postseason game in 2014, 2016 and 2017, and had not won a game since 2009 before that.

Under the current format (1999-present), the PL Champ has been the #4 seed playing the #1 seed in their opener in every year except for 2002 when Navy was a #3 seed in Winston-Salem. The only PL Champ to beat the #1 seed was the 2008 Bucknell team that shutout Florida State (who ended up in the College World Series). Every other win came in the loser's bracket.

Moral of the story is that the Patriot League Champion can usually hang with some of the top tier, but maybe not the "top of the top tier" in most years.

Men's soccer won in the NCAA Play-In Round over Dayton in 1998 before losing to #1 Clemson. In 1999, they tied UMBC in the NCAA Play-In Round, but did not advance after losing 6-5 in penalty kicks (still a tie in the record books). If you don't count Play-In Round, men's soccer beat Cornell in the NCAA First Round in 1995.

The 1980 women's lacrosse team was the 1980 United States Women's Lacrosse Association Division II National Champion. Not an NCAA title, though, if we're splitting hairs.

two other things about Nebraska:

-  They are not a very good team.   In the various computer models, their composite rank was #37 and many had them in the 40's or even 50's.    Many thought they should have been a 3 seed, not a 2, in their 4-team pod.

-  Although  the Big 10 is a so-called P5 conference, for baseball it is not very good.    In the computer ratings, that league only had one of the top 35 teams in the nation and none of the top 22.   As mediocre as Bucknell was this year, they beat Iowa easily in ooc play.  (Iowa beat Nebraska 3 out of 4 times fwiw.)    And BU gave Ohio State and Penn State close games, even using second-tier pitchers.

We get it.  Lafayette beat Notre Dame this year as well, so understand things such as this happen in baseball.

Point is that Holy Cross baseball was as bad as any program in this league for years.  It was arguably a bigger rebuild than Lafayette given the lack of success in a generation and terrible conditions for the sports.  If they can win the league and get a tourney win so can we. Baseball can and should be fixed.

How can we win with a coach who is a Lehigh grad?

That's not so.    Holy Cross has been a strong program for five of the past six years and was picked for 1st in the official PL preseason poll this spring. For five of those six years, they finished no worse than 2nd place.    A look back at HC's recent league records:

2017: 12-8 (2nd place)
2016: 14-6 (2nd place)
2015: 12-8 (Tie 2nd)
2014: 4-14 (6th place)
2013: 15-5 (1st place)
2012: 13-7 (2nd place)

Even with the one terrible year, they have been the league's second best team over these six years.   Just hadn't broken through to win the tournament.   And for the 2007-11 seasons, they were above .500, although not dominant.   Clearly not comparable at all to LC's situation.

Let's not forget that we took 3 out of 4 from Holy Cross this season.
