Joe Maddon Goes Home

Comcast Chicago has made a 30 minute profile of Joe Maddon which is being shown on Comcast and Verizon sports channels. I watched it after the Flyers' game last night on CSN. It's very interesting and shows his family and charity work back in Hazelton. There is a brief segment devoted to his college days on the hill.

Some Chicago sports columnists (Gordon Wittenmyer of The Sun-Times today, for one) are trying to say that Joe's approach to workplace harmony is kinda juvenile pertaining to his use of a mime (yesterday), trainers bringing in zoo animals, etc., etc.  (Sorta stuff he did in Tampa.)  IMO, if the Cubs start losing, Joe won't avoid criticism. The scribes will start with the goofy stuff and then work their way toward baseball.
Pard4Life

Right.  The columnists who call that goofy are those who attribute the lack of Cubs' winning to a billy goat, a guy in a hoodie sitting catching a foul ball, and a black cat.  Whatever.

Joe is one of the best, if not the best in the game.  He is not exactly traditional, but it seems to work!

Rooting for the Cubs as long as Joe is there.  Hopefully he can win the series and go down in history as the man who broke the curse.

IMO  Issue with the big-city sports writers (many of whom are on the radio with their assorted opinions, also)... they're used to being the "smartest guys in the room."  Combine that with Joe thinking HE'S the smartest guy in the interview room and you've got a problem that, for now, is under the surface.

"I'm here to protect this game."
"Whose game, Max?"

Comment by one personality on sports talk radio today:  "Joe's trying a little too hard to be a player's manager."  Something to do with how he's handling Heyward (who isn't hitting).

Some writers have to write negative stuff to justify their existance. The Cubs have the best record in baseball 39-14 last time I checked. There should be nothing to complain about- he turned the team around in just 1+ years.I would think Maddon knows better how to handle a slumping player than any sports writer. The Fightin' Phils are settling in today for a weekend series at Wrigley so Joe will be on full display for us east coasters.

Totally unrelated BUT

Friday, White Sox down 1-0    top of seventh   get first hit (KC pitcher had not allowed a runner prior)  then another, then another, then a grand slam, then a solo homer    up 5-1    big time momentum      lose 7-5
Saturday  White Sox up 7-1 into the bottom of the ninth        lose 8-7    last 2815 games only 5 games has that happened when a team down 6 runs into ninth wins
team dropped from first to third in one day

Correction : Cubs were 29-14 not 39-14 which was typing error. Now even better after demolition of Feeble Phils.

After losing three straight to the Cardinals, Joe goes ahead with "wacky-themed" road trip garb as Cubs visit Miami, Cincy, and NYM.  Short-shorts, short-sleeved jacket, and bare chest or tanktop.  Arrieta getting shellacked, Heyward not hitting, Rizzo's back acting up...I know he's trying to keep them loose; but, if things go south, they'll say his approach is not serious enough. (Some in the media--as stated previously--have had an issue with this for a while now.  Joe's track record gives him the benefit of the doubt.  For now.)

Ten-game leads in August have been lost.  This is June.

This is (these are?) the Cubs, after all.
