The BIG question:  Is he gonna put the stripes back on the helmet?
BillS

Impressive!
Bogus Megapardus

Most convincing answer was to the question, "Why Lafayette?"

His answer seemed honest and enthusiastic - Why not Lafayette?  Its has a top reputation, a storied history, incredible support and the best facilities in FCS.  Who wouldn't want to coach here?

Also, I hope and pray - traditional colors ONLY. Maroon jerseys and white pants at home; white jerseys and maroon pants (or white on white) on the road.
WVPard

Many good things said.  Pretty reasonable approach to recruiting and schemes.  I like the focus on the players' psyche.

With the problems we had in the past, he seems like a solid choice.

Very interesting that Bruce acknowledged the lack of passion from alums, parents, and the school.  Maybe the consultant and committee are working?

Bring back Uncle Billy's silver pants with Maroon and White Jerseys!

No more red and black, please.  We aren't the Atlanta Falcons.
Bogus Megapardus

Why does he think he can succeed in the PL? Says he played in the Ivy, coached in the CAA, and the PL is pretty much in between.  Maybe a rehearsed answer (and maybe not) but he's correct.

Plus I liked his points about being "this close" to Villanova and Delaware.  Clearly he's watched the tapes and he sees something.

Bruce McC said nine candidates interviewed off campus (presumably Hotel Bethlehem) and three of those nine came to campus.  Based on the intelligence provided by XLeopard and others, its seem that the three on-campus interviewees were Harvard OC Joel Lamb, Princeton OC James Perry, and Garrett.

I'm guessing that those who did not make the final cut are in secure positions with other teams and would prefer not to have their name mentioned.  I have a gut instinct that John Troxell likely was one of them and Mickey Fein was another.  I don't know if John Loose was interviewed but it seems likely as well.

Seemed very likeable.  If there's any risk in this hire; it's a risk I think we should be taking.  Go leopards!

XLeopard - would there be any prospect of bringing in Troxell as an assistant?

No. There are no circumstances I can think of that would have Trox willing to come back as an assistant.

Paul, and to a lesser extent Brad, seemed to ask questions from Frank's wheel of excuses.

What about redshirting?

What about roster sizes?

What about academic standards?

I wish Garrett would've shut em down, but he was being polite.  Every program has challenges, but the positives of this school for out weight the issues that much be dealt with.

YES! Throwing out all the supposed impediments to success and so "why LC?" Some questions or preludes to questions almost seemed like knocks on the guy. Disappointed in PR.  Maybe could've asked "Will you be boarding the team bus with your players or will you have it stop by your house on the way out?" Things had gotten out of hand around here and we needed a change. Some I guess still dont believe it.

Will use bogies link -thanks!- to relisten. One good question was re the QB situation. I believe Coach said "We will bring in several in this class..."  Presumably he has some kids in mind from his recruiting efforts. The staff has one good one committed that I know of - Northrup.

That's the impression I took away as well.  Would it be too much to hope for a Ross Scheuerman-type athlete as an all-purpose back/receiver on top of that?

Also I like Coach Garrett's attitude, when one player succeeds, we all succeed.  We need more of that.
Bogus Megapardus

Watching a bit of the replay . . . in describing the recruits and the players, Coach Garrett says, "we want them to be renaissance men."  That nails it.  It's a perfect description of the ideal Lafayette student-athlete.  I think Coach Garrett will know a potential renaissance man when he meets one.

Maybe a new hashtag - #RenaissanceMen

Yes, he sure said all the right things. Bruce also has a total man crush on John.

I also found it interesting that there were several references to the fact that the program was in a bad place and it lacked juice and attendance and interest was suffering.  That was never publically mentioned before.

Excited to see who he brings on staff, and appears he has several individuals in mind already.
conflictedpard

I think his comment regarding the QB and bringing some guys in, would have me look to transfer or see of there are other options out there for freshman qbs.
I thought that the recruiting class was full already. That leaves the question are there de-committs? Was more scholarships raised?
I wonder if he looks at everyone's hudl or film again and re evaluates their position. The talent is there to win games. I just think there were personnel in the wrong positions.

That, and I think Coach Garrett could barely contain himself about how delighted he was just to be here.  That was genuine.

Solid choice Lafayette.  I felt Perry was the best fit, and really liked his coaching resume. But I give LC credit for going outside the Lafayette umbrella and hiring John Garrett.  The college had three very strong choices in Lamb, Perry, and the eventual selection Garrett.

I've watched film of his offense in three games,  and it is impressive. From the clips I observed, he favors a vertical attack in his passing game.  That should be fun to watch, and Mrazek could be one of several beneficiaries of this scheme.

IMHO, the two most important hires he makes on his staff will be 1, his defensive coordinator, and 1a, the assistant in charge of recruiting.

I'm turning the page and hoping Coach Garrett is successful in building a program that is a perennial contender to win the Patriot League Championship.
Bogus Megapardus

Brad Wilson:
McCutcheon declined to give details of Garrett's contract, except that it was a multi-year deal. McCutcheon also said that Garrett would have the "resources he needs" to hire the staff he wants.

And "one on one"  interview:

Good Reinhard: interesting/revealing quotes from Coach, Mike Joseph and even Bruce:

http://www.mcall.com/sports/colle...ootball-coach-20161221-story.html

Asked what impressed him about Garrett, Joseph said, "He's an expert on football, and that's what I thought we needed. The more we talked, the more I felt his connection to what he can do with the kids. The staff he'll put together will be phenomenal and he'll be moving forward with excitement and energy. Some things may surprise him, but he'll hit them head-on."
Bogus Megapardus

Engaging a video chat with all players and recruits - before the announcement - certainly seems unusual but it's the sort of thing I've started to expect of Lafayette.  That was an inspired decision, IMHO.
Spardicus80

I, too, was impressed with Coach Garrett's desire to recruit renaissance men.  David Shaw, the HC at Stanford, was once asked what he looked for in recruiting athletes, and he replied, " I look for Stanford men."  Best of luck to Coach Garrett in finding a few "Lafayette men."
LeopardBall10

I have had a busy few days so I didn't get a chance to watch the press conference. I'll have to check out the replay.

I don't know anything about Garrett, but at the very least it sounds like the college completed the search in exactly the right way. They found the top candidates, were not stuck in the "its the way its always been done" bad habits, and made the decision based on potential wins not necessarily the budget.

We could start an assistant thread, but unless XLep has a bug in the phone of the corner office I don't think we'll sniff out who is offered. Most candidates are asked about their potential staffs during the interview process. So, he has probably already reached out to his OC and DC before the announcement.

How the staff is structured will tell you a lot about his salary pool for assistants. He won't be able to pull active FBS coordinators or NFL position coaches, the money is just too different. But I wouldn't be surprised to see someone with FBS experience who is either out of a job or currently a quality control coach in the NFL. I also wonder if he and Rocco are going to fight over some of the younger coaches or position coaches from Richmond?

Saw that!

I believe Rocco so far has taken 2 coaches with him from UR - the OL coach and the young LB coach.  The WR Coach, Fontel Mines, played for JG at UVA, and, based on a Youtube interview, got his free agent shot thanks to JG. I could see Coach Mines coming in.

Agree on Mines.  Garrett really likes him, and I think he would be a great asset for us.

There was discussion about how we were down a few scholarships due to a ridiculous accounting preference regarding the way the alumni funded scholarships were distributed.  It was just a stupid buercratic issue likely stemming from Bruce's inability to fight for anything.  This was a very minor issue, and one that would be rectified as a result of this hiring process and study.  Give the man 60 rides, which I believe they have done.  With a few defections and maybe 2 or 3 rides handed back coach should be able to bring in a couple of his own recruits before signing day.

Paul had to mention the 2 or 3 rides we were down, as if that was the reason the program sucked.  This was an often used excuse by Frank to explain away his problems.  Bucknell by the way has about 50 rides per what I've heard, and they crushed us 2 years in a row.  Issues like this I believe will be solved.

Dad you may well already have more info than we non-insiders. My understanding is that we have not been at the full 60 level. FoF was to fund one scholarship per year, then the college threw in a monkey wrench demanding the money up front. This was not well received.

This could definitely be his plan for the OL, and a hire that Frank would not have been able to make. Frank just doesn't have the connections in FBS. But to pull a guy like this, a GA at Nebraska who I am assuming Coach Garrett knows well, would be a win. Coach Garrett gets someone that he knows, who probably has experience with his system. You also get a young hungry coach who wants to make a name for himself. Lafayette would probably be his first full-time gig as a position coach. That means he would probably be looking to move on or move up in a few years, but that could be a really good thing. You would also get him for a lot less than Frank was paying Stan, and he would be happy about it.
LC.Dad.13

I think that this is a great hire by the school, and I look forward to seeing how this move impacts the broader cultural issues in LC athletics that are frequently discussed on this board.

Being of a certain age and having an appreciation of history, I think it is interesting that as the new HC of Lafayette football, Coach Garrett is following a path similar to that of his father, Jim Garrett, who was brought in by Columbia in 1985 to turn around their football team (see links below).  I do not expect a similar outcome.

I did notice in the presser how enthusiastically President Byerly was clapping at the end.  I know very little about her, so maybe it is just her personality.

But, I highly doubt that either of our two immediate past-presidents would have been as enthusiastic.  Maybe, just maybe, we are really turning a corner...

I do think she "get's it." Maybe a little hopeful, but the review of the competitiveness of the athletic program certainly bears her imprimatur. She's probably trolling this board.  Wink

I am pleased that HC moved rapidly to replace Frank before year's end with Garret for a number of reasons already raised by others.

The timing is important in terms of recruiting, since Garret no doubt has existing relationships with offensive recruits, who were looking at U Richmond, which is a fine academic institution. His hiring will hopefully be a stabilizing influence for our existing recruits as well.

I like Garret's approach and believe, at a minimum, that are offense will be improved, which is admittedly a low bar. With 20-20 hindsight, the failure of the offense to control the ball and take time off the clock repeatedly caused our defense to spend way too much time on the field and become worn down by the 4th quarter. Garret's comments regarding several of those close games suggests that he sees the potential.
SixtyEighter

LC Dad - Do you also remember that the father was fired from Columbia after that season because the players went to the administration and complained that Garrett Sr was too hard on them and forcing them to chose between football and studying? But that led to his return to Princeton and to his sons Jason and Judd at least and possibly John being the only transfers ever accepted at Princeton for football.
I would also like to  state for the record that I was wrong when I said on this board that it was unlikely Lafayette would find a Bob Surace. We have - the big differences are only  that our coach is not an alumnus of Lafayette and was already at our level after working in the NFL.Nevertheless he is extremely promising.

I did recall that he was fired, but only from what I read in the paper, which, upon revisiting, suggests that he still had the support of the players, which I did not recall nor would have expected.

"But in an emotional, hastily arranged meeting, 63 freshman and varsity players, who gathered in an attempt to overturn the decision, felt their coach had been pushed. The players voted, 54-9, to ask that the coach be reinstated. By the end of the meeting, however, older players reconsidered protesting the decision. While no formal complaint was presented last night, several players were angered that they had not been involved the process that led to the coach's departure."

And yet some on this board worry that he won't be motivated enough because he's not 33...or something...

Time will tell but I think they made a great hire.
OPPard

I was a Cramsey or Perry advocate and after speaking to 2 people on the committee and another who played for Garrett last year I think this is a great hire.  He's got the best pedigree of any PL coach by miles.  I was leery of his short tenures but if he comes in and turns things around in 2 or 3 years and bolts then what?  THEN it is a way better job than it was this go round when Perry and Cramsey wanted the gig.  No lose situation unless he gags which I don't see happening.  Bruce takes a lot of shots (rightfully) but I think he should be lauded for this scenario.
Bogus Megapardus

During the press conference, Garrett said that he would spend Christmas "in Richmond with his family" and then come right back to Easton to get to work. Elsewhere I read that Garrett and his family actually reside in Tampa and that Garrett lived in Richmond only during the season.

Perhaps this has been overlooked, and perhaps the answer simply was assumed, but does Coach Garrett intend to live in Easton, or will he maintain only a transient presence?  Will his family remain in Tampa?
SixtyEighter

Bogey- I don't know but my bet is the whole family comes to Easton to live in a house provided by the college.
Bogus Megapardus

Here's the interview at halftime of the Colgate BB game on 12/30.  Not a whole lot there; Garrett repeats almost verbatim the talking points he used during the press conference.  Emphasis on a flexible scheme tailored to meet the skill set of the players was good to hear.

https://youtu.be/YSIvyNZn1Pc

Garrett is pretty geeky guy but Lafayette is a pretty geeky place. I think he's what recruits (and their parents) expect from Lafayette College.

Here's the interview at halftime of the Colgate BB game on 12/30.  Not a whole lot there; Garrett repeats almost verbatim the talking points he used during the press conference.  Emphasis on a flexible scheme tailored to meet the skill set of the players was good to hear.

Garrett is pretty geeky guy but Lafayette is a pretty geeky place. I think he's what recruits (and their parents) expect from Lafayette College.

I was especially impressed with matching the scheme with the current players skill set. That's what a successful coach does. A lesson for all our coaches. There is no magic offense or defense, you match watch you have with the  other guy's weaknesses!!! I've been waiting for a long to time to hear that from every coach at Lafayette!!
