Johns Hopkins Freezes hiring and Salaries,and will cut Admin

.......... Salaries.

The university endowment lost 20 pct of its value in the first six months of the fiscal year. ( We have lost at least that through OCT and at least 30 pct year to date.) Revenue is also down.

William Brody (the university president) said, " Business and banks have failed, GDP is down. Unemployment is up. Many of our friends and relatives have lost work. Our priority is to preserve the excellence of Johns Hopkins and to address, to the extent posible that resources allow, taking into account the changing financial circumstances of returning students." He will reduce top administrative salaries by 5% and institute a hiring freeze that will last through June 30,2010. Overtime will be eliminated and the use use of temporary employees  or contract employees will not be allowed.

Seems to me THIS is a dose of reality. Maybe they already have a diversity dean with an unemployed spouse.

Just like at major corps the top level dudes ,who gauge their salary by the hundreds of thousands, take small paycuts while cutting or freezing lower level but essential positions.  My company, and probably your company, operate in the same manner.  My CEO continues to make an embaressingly large and dis-proportionate salary, while I am having difficult doing my job effectivelly because those "expendable" people that I rely on to help me are all gone.  

If he was truly serious about giving his students the best possible service he would cut his salary by half and hold on to those part time profs and librarians or whomever else they will do away with.  Those people have a much larger immediate impact on the quality of the students'
education and experience.

But overall I agree "business as usual" has went out the window for companies, colleges. government, and pretty much everyone.   Lets try this-- if Weiss really wants that diversity dean why doesnt he shave off a chunk of that salary and use the savings to hire him?  That would work

Amen....actually  I think the salary of the JH president is over 1 mio and he may be retiring soon.
